@@LearnColorGrading yes could you do Neat Video fps benchmark on 1080P and 4K footage on all configs? Want to see if it’s worth getting the Max. I concur. As a professional colorist, the nodes listed above in Zentire’s post are part of a pretty standard node tree with actual working colorists on a daily basis. Resolve is good for editors but colorists are a huge customer base and need to see real-world use case, not just raw media playback.

Finally. Without explaining it technically, you've clearly demonstrated that video playback is mostly about efficiencies in the format, decoding algorithms embedded into hardware, and the optimizations in the software doing the editing... and has relatively little to do with raw computation. Trying to explain it clinically can be maddening.

There are two things I use a lot of on 4k and 5k footage that I have to break up my workflow over, and that's Optical Flow -> Speed Warp and Temporal/Spatial Noise Reduction. This is something I'd love to see tested to see if we're more CPU or GPU bound with the now Pro and Max vs the M1, or if like the playback tests, we seem to be primarily CPU bound, where the differences between the M1 and the M1 Max is a lot less obvious.

Will be interesting to see this type of comparison with intensive grading work (like noise reduction) and/or Fusion composition thrown in. Playback issues can largely be mitigated with display resolution or proxy media. Other aspects of Resolve can tear up a CPU with a 720p uncompressed clip.

@@Rob-vb9md Hi ya, yes absolutely, I was doing some testing on my M1 Pro MacBook against my PC desktop which is a 3900x CPU plus Radeon VII GPU. Using a finished 5min short film project shot on Red 8K, the MacBook was able to playback smooth where as the PC struggled at full 4K timeline max debayering, both are fine at half res. Export times where 5min on PC & 9min on MacBook. Obviously a more beefy desktop could wipe the floor with it but in terms of experience and use ability, the MacBook M1 Pro is completely smooth even before you use optimisations.

That is a relief! I bought a shrink-wrapped M1 13" MBP a month ago. I got it for a bargain price from a seller who just didn't *want it*. It even qualifies for Apple extended warranty. I'd have to pay 2x that price just for the entry level 14" M1 Pro! I mostly stick to 4K. The highest resolution I shoot is 5.3K 360, which is generally reframed first anyway. My art doesn't suffer on last year's M1 🤭, but on a long and busy timeline with lots of short clips, it chokes at full-res playback with colour correction.

This video is great and actually focuses on what really weighs down the machines rather than render times. Im using the m1 air currently for film and its a lot more stable than my Intel i7 10700k with a 2060S running Windows. The constant crashing is a greater hinderance than the slight choppiness which I have only gotten so far when really loading clips with lots of colouring, masking, effects and 3D models through fusion. The M1 Crashed once in comparison to the Windows machine which had crashed multiple times and caused major headaches with one project which I had to start from scratch. The m1 Air with 16gb is really a great bang for the buck for mobile as well as stationary content creation. The only Achilles heel is the 16 GB Ram which is sometimes a bottleneck but only on more complex timelines.

it's probably you worth testing all three on Apple Prores footage b/c the M1 Max has specific silicon for encoding and decoding the ProRes codec. I would expect you'd start to see major differences between MBA M1 and MBP M1 Pro/Max on this point. Also note that some apps, and Resolve may well be one of them don't use all the M1 hardware resources. I don't have a ever problem editing HD video on M1 Mac mini or MBA with 8 GB RAM if I only have PremPro open for example. However, having 100 or so browser tabs open in Safari and FireFox and a few productive apps can grind an M1 with 8 GB of shared RAM and a 4K display to a halt and lots of ~8 second freezes. Some peoples workflows may necessitate having lots of apps open at once, or they are just lazy and this will see difference I expect (the internal bus speeds on the M1 Max are 8x the M1!)

Thanks for all your tests and conclusions, however I would like to point out a couple of things. First, I woudn't show the playback in fullscreen next time, would be better to see the resolve gui and the actual fps playback count on the top/left corner of the clip. In that way would be possible to see if there is any tangeble difference between all the 3 macs - for exemple, any of them couden't play 5.9K Raw 24p, but how many fps per second each of them coud reach? (between 3-4fps and 19-20fps there are 5x more playback performance) Second point. Right, video raw is out for smooth playback with all of them, and because very few people need to work with those codecs that's not a big problem. However I don't think it's pointless to test h264, h265, Prores and all the traditional codecs on the new M1 Pro and Max. I'm sure the Max would handle many more nodes adjustments before start to skip frames. Temporal noise reduction or film Grain in Resolve are very hard to process and thet never playback in real time for example with any codec. But maybe the M1 Pro or Max could do better because of the dedicated hardware encoder and decoder for Prores and h264 introduced with the new Cips. Been able to playback in real time NR and film grain even dropping down timeline resolution to 1080p would be a big big improvment over the M1 or any other laptop. And my last point is just about what I mentioned before, the new M1 Pro and Max have new hardware encoder and deconder. That's should make a very remarkable improvement in export time using prores or h264, which are the most common delivery codec today. I woud consider rendering time also a big point to differenciate the performance of the 3 models.

These are really interesting results, thank you so much for sharing your investigations. There's just one thing that I'm disappointed you did not include. Could you please run through some relatively taxing footage with Inter-Frame Noise Reduction applied in Resolve? As you observed, it's one thing to play to Apple silicon's strengths, it's another to see what a common real world task like NR or tracking demands in terms of memory pressure and GPU cores without dedicated CODEC support.

At 27:45 in the Apple "Unleashed" event, head of Resolve development Rohit Gupta said the M1 Max could handle color correction, power windows with tracking and magic mask in real time --which implies non-cached, and not using render in place, etc. At 27:53 the Resolve screen shows 4k ProRes clips, probably 24 fps. That would be appropriate if the goal was demonstrate performance on real-time effects vs decode. In general the most computationally challenging phase is finishing, where you might be using stabilization, temporal/spatial noise reduction, magic mask, tracking, face refinement, etc. It would be interesting to see those specific effects tested on Resolve 17.4 on an M1 Max using a 4k ProRes timeline, and compared to other M1 or even x86 machines. Your stress tests are so interesting! I wonder if you might add an Adobe Lightroom stress test, because even the 2020 M1 MacBook Air is still very slow at batch Lightroom tasks. Importing and adding 1:1 Previews and Smart Previews on a 50GB folder of 500 raw images (a typical pro photography task) takes 25 minutes. I'd love to know if the M1 Max caches and renders previews of large folders any faster. Since I know you're a video editor, you could use a folder of 1,000 CinemaDNG frames if you don't have massive folders of still raw photos lying around. Thanks from a grateful fan!

This is a great video. I would offer one suggestion: try letting it run through (despite the stuttering of not being real time). IME the ML takes a bit to figure out what you want to do but once it does it does run smoother. I use it for animation and when I get heavily into simulations, particles and replicators, there is a kind of pause while it seems to figure out what I'm asking of it. Mileage may vary of course, but it's worth a try with all the new ML that's built in here.

Nice 👍 The one test you should really try is the warp speed slow motion. I don't know about the 16gb, but my 8gb M1 MacBook Pro could not handle that.

Hi , I realy aprecciate your advise and your tests! Thank you so much for that! Allow me the following questiion: You mention in one of your videos, where you test the new Apple M1 chips , that RAM Memory size is not so important in the M1 macs anymore... could it be that working memory size does become important again when you make longer projects then youtube clips like 60 Min Films or longer?

I have no doubt that over time companies will begin to understand the new M1 variants better and optimise for them, so performance is increased. However, as someone who cannot yet afford those pro products and has just recently purchased an M1 machine, I have to admit, I’m relieved haha

Thanks a lot for this very interesting video and also all the amazing work you do with Film Simplified, it helped me a lot in my video editing. I have one question regarding the new Macs. In my usage I often use the Optical Flow Speed Warp to produce very good slow motion. However I noticed that my current M1 was struggling doing this more than my « old 16inch MBP ». Any chance that you do a test using 4K footage in H265 to see if there is any difference regarding this was of doing slow motion ?

The M1 Pro/Max have double the CPU performance cores, double SSD speed, at least double GPU cores. For them not (seem to) be almost any better on those tests something must be off. Not sure if DaVinci only uses single core (CPU or GPU) to perform those tasks (which should get better in future versions) or if there was a significant improvement, in FPS but you didn't detect them, or something else. The Pro is literally 2x the M1. I would love to see more data on the tests.

see anandtech article, Max gets roughly 2x the FPS with noise reduction, and multiple nodes of blur. some GPU tasks seem to scale perfectly.

Very good in-depth comparison! Thanks! For editing multiple 4K 30fps 100m, 5-10 streams on FinalCut, while having 5-10 clips open(paused, not playing until selected) in QuickTimePlayer, with 10-15 24m jpeg/raw compressed images open in Preview, would you suggest the 16"M1Pro(10-core CPU/16-core GPU/32gb memory), or one of the 16"M1Max versions 1) 10-core CPU/24-core GPU/16g or 32g memory 2) 10-core CPU/32-core GPU/16g or 32g memory? This would be my only device. Thanks, if able!

Hi, which version of Davincie Resolve did you use for the test? ... cause if it was version 17.4, than these results would already be the "5x times faster" thing ... but if you have been using an older version, it would mean the results would increase with v17.4 ...

Another interesting approach.... typically video formats used. (2k or 4k with fps) vs. RAM needed (16 or 32 or 64) vs SSD capacity needed (512gb or 1tb or 2tb)

I‘m still not sure whether to max out the M1 Pro chip (10 CPU / 16 GPU / 32 GB RAM) for editing up to 5.4k/30fps and 4k/120fps material plus some lightroom editing. Because these are the resolutions at the moment, however, I want my MacBook Pro to be future proof as well. My current MBP is a late-2013, and I intend to buy a MBP that lasts equally as long again. Maybe 4k/5k will soon be replaced by 8k in drones, action cams and DSLRs/mirrorless cameras. Will the base model suffice then? (I‘m a hobbyist by the way: Sony A6500, DJI Action 2, DJI Air 2s.) Thanks for the great video!

Thanks for the comprehensive tests on these machines, especially the canon r5 test which most applies to me. Definitely put these machines in perspective and honestly made me decide not to buy the new computers. I'll stick with what I already have and continue to use optimizations and proxies to get the most out of my current computer and will hold off on upgrading until these computers are more robust. Just a reccomendation, can you please include time codes in future videos so we can easily jump to the part of the video that is most relevant to us. Thanks.

Hi Alex! Love that your cat in making a small, but though appearance. My cats, Oscar, Blackie and Scabbers says hello! Alex, one thing comes to mind about the different RAW standards. I remember reading an interview with the CEO of HP Instruments in the 90th. Journalist - Are HP for standards? HP Instruments CEO: Yes, because there are so many to choose from. ProRes RAW is not supported by Davinci. None of my cameras can shoot in any mentioned format without an external recorder. The M1 Pro and M1 Max have the same cores as the original M1. The good thing is the the CPU war is heating up even more. First AMD targeted Intel, then Apple shot a torpedo in the side of both, Vive la guerre! As always Alex, best Greetings from Sweden.

Please, can you make a video advice for the amount of memory suggested 32 vs 64 and going with 1T or 2Tb storage for the new video creators that want to step in to film making using Sony a7siii or equivalent. That's the last important decision to be made before buying a new MacBook. Thank you for your great work...

I am not sure if you are into it bit definitely would be interested in some heavy Fusion stuff. Like a video mosaic with 25 concurrent 4K videos with a camera hovering over in 3d space. Or plotting a 360 video on a sphere and reframe the video with a camera within, as @creatorup is doing.
