Wow, thx for doing all those tests for filmmakers! I'm retired now, way before H.265 and 8K timelines (thank heavens), but I am just blown away by what an 8gb M1 chip can do in Resolve. If I had this back in the day, I would have had so much more time to do other things (not scrubbing and rendering until I could feel all of my life energy drain away).

I appreciate your tests but I would like to see a real-life test; editing a full HD or 4k project from beginning to end, using all the pages: Import (Media), Trimming and adding Transitions (Edit), Audio sweetening (Fairlight), Color Correction and Grading (Color), Motion Titles (Fusion), and Export (Deliver). That is how most people will use it in a real-world scenario.

Jon Pais Based on the amount of people that liked my comment, there is real interest in more practical tests. Right after I watched this video, I found this other one from The Everyday Dad kzbin.info/www/bejne/eZzOcoRnjLWYpsk That is closer to what us, professional editors, have to deal with on a daily basis. Don't worry, KZbin content creators are always looking for ideas for their next video.

@@JonPais Learning Color Grading and The Everyday Dad have different approaches to testing the M1. I just noticed that LCG has other videos focused on the Fusion page and other areas. His style is more technical and he sounds like a professor. The Everyday Dad is more like the typical video editor you would find in a tv station or post-production facility. I know cause I'm a veteran video editor with more than 20 years of experience, and have worked in those places. In the video I linked, he failed to include transitions and titles to the project and I made sure he heard it, but his workflow included the processing, editing, and rendering. He used BRAW footage from the Pocket Cinema Camera 4k on the Davinci Resolve test and HEVC 4k 10bit from a Panasonic Lumix S5 on the Final Cut Pro test.

Jon Pais Who is the one being rude? There is nothing wrong with someone sounding like a professor. It is actually a compliment to his knowledge. I just checked your channel. You have some good stuff in there. That's why I don't understand the necessity to come here and start a fight just because you didn't like my original suggestion for content. I would never call someone a "rude little punk". I'm inclined to believe that your account has been hacked; otherwise you have some serious personal issues.

"future proofing" by spending more now may be futile. I did that with my current Macbook Pro, but would have been better off saving the extra money I spent and putting it towards these new machines.

I agree. These machines, while surprisingly powerful, are the first of their kind and they were released to get the ball rolling for apple silicon. I don't think it's unreasonable to think that whatever comes next will be significantly more capable. I got the base model M1 Mac Mini and I intend to keep it for just a year or two, then invest is a more future proof machine once the dust has settled and the overall picture is clearer.

How far we have come in just a few years. December 2017 Apple released the iMac Pro, which was probably the fastest Mac at the time, and pretty pricey. The press release said "Video editors can edit up to eight streams of 4K video, or edit 4.5K RED RAW video and 8K ProRes 4444 at full resolution in real time without rendering. " Three years later we get the bottom end Macs and ask "8k Red raw?" Great times to be an editor.

I had to do a follow-up to my previous post. It turns out the stuttering was not caused by the M1 processor or the 8G configuration. It was simply an issue of a slow disc Drive. I transferred the clips to a SSD disc connected directly to the computer using a direct C connection and even the 8K footage plays fine. Rookie mistake. I should know better.

Other reviewers are arguing that the 16G of RAM cuts down on swapping to the SSD and hence potentially extends the life of the hard drive. In any case, many thanks for these videos. But it degrades your SSD's life
@mysterychemical
@mysterychemical 3 жыл бұрын
@@zankenzien 'Yes. It does but not by much.' Technically it does affect as it does use some TBW of an SSD given by manufacturer. But if talking on overall life of SSD it depends on Vendor, SSD capacity, SSD technology(SLC, MLC, TLC or QLC), technology own's endurace which varies from NAND flash manufacturer, vendors manufacturing defects too. So, if talking about TBW rating given by vendors like Sabrent/Inland or others which is very high, it barely affects any at all for normal users and may affect to some degree for professionals technically. But, my Sabrent SSD 512GB TLC NVMe SSD got wrecked with less than 40TBW for simple professional work. Technically it had 800TBW as per manufacturer which got wrecked on 40TBW so nothing can be said on SSD. All it can be boiled down to term 'technically'. Simply saying then - It affects but it depends as said above even while making fixed work environment either for normal or pro work.

There is one major advantage of 16GB option - M1 generation utilises a "swap memory" technique - it basically is a memory dump to SSD when the RAM is overloaded. Happens immediately when you start up Davinci. So it constantly is using your SSD as a memory. Over time, this could have a POTENTIAL negative effect on your internal SSD drive, so make sure you choose wisely before making the decision between 8GB RAM vs 16GB!

Noise Reduction has a serious hit to performance on my 8GB M1 MacBook Air. Render time for 5 minute 4K video with 7 4K 10-bit 4-2-2 HLG clips with titles and even noise blur effects was 1minute 9 seconds (amazing). Repeating the same render but with Noise Reduction? 18 minutes 42 seconds. Also real time viewing of clip, however once noise reduction applied an 1/4 proxy setting was needed to make it playable in timeline. So yes, an 8GB M1 can do fusion noise reduction, but I'd save it to be the very last step in your workflow before render. Better yet, a 16GB, because this is the first time I see yellow and brief red peaks in the memory pressure in activity monitor.

This is absolutely insane. It’s amazing that the base config of the mini performs this well. I’ve been debating back and forth between the base config and 16GB Ram/ 512 SSD for speed reasons. Turns out, I don’t need to worry about that. I shoot 4k or 6k open gate on a panasonic S5. The longGOP is heavy. Wonder how that works. I usually convert to ProRes444 because Resolve Free doesn’t run the codec. My 3D works require heavier hardware normally, but I might build a PC for that anyways. Thanks for taking the time to run these tests!

As someone mentioned previously the SSD swap memory function is not utilized as much with the 16GB version which can increase the life span of the SSE. BUT even more relevant is that according to another test I saw comparing the 8 and 16Gb machines the 16Gb rendered footage a lot faster. As in 2-3x faster than the 8Gb model. Since you didn’t compare render times in your video I guess you left out the one big thing that actually makes a difference

DR / F will be running at approx 5.8 - 7.2 GB ram.... averaging at about 6.5. Working on projects of 30 min or more with reasonably complex grades and occasional fusion scrips you´ll run out of application memory after a while but this can be solved by a restart of the software. In other words, you can do it with 8GB, but if you´re working on serious projects you´re living life on the edge and sometimes you´ll fall off. If you´re a casual user or working on shorts you´ll be fine with 8GB, otherwise go for 16. But frankly the fact that you can work on a long form professional project on a mac mini at all is completely bonkers.

Just remember that the less RAM you have the more you are going to be paging to disk (SSD). That would be a ton of reading and writing to the SSD. The good thing with these systems is that r/w to the SSD is super fast, the bad thing is that SSD sectors can only be written to so many times and then it is dead. You can't swap out the SSD on these since they are part of the SoC. Get the most RAM you can!

If I need more RAM in the future, maybe it is better to sell my 8 GB devices and buy a model with 16 or maybe 32. Who knows? We will properly get more RAM and even faster processors. Yes, you can only connect 1 external display to the m1 macbook officially, there are people that have managed 2 but they need expensive accessories to do so.

Loved the information and presentation (especially putting all the details on screen as an overlay, HUGE props on that). For the testing, did you use inter-frame or intra-frame noise reduction? What settings specifically? I"m most interested in seeing how RAM is impacted when doing inter-frame noise reduction with a look-ahead of maybe 2 frames.

In my experience (on my machine) it isn't a resolution that is the issue. It's the Bit-Rate and the Sub-Sampling. For example, 4K 8-Bit 420 has no issues. But, even 1080p 10-Bit 422, without any grading or anything will not playback in real-time. However, 4K 60p (crop) 10-Bit 420 plays and scrubs flawlessly. But Crop is not why I bought a full-frame camera. It seems to be the difference between 422 and 420 that is the issue. Any ideas anyone? Is it my CPU or my GPU or both?

I’m buying more storage since it reads and writes faster than 3rd party. Staying with 8gig ram. Will use for a year or two and get next version when it will be even faster and most likely a new form factor body design. Mac mini is a bargain.

All these results are seriously impressive considering the cost of these machines. However, I have yet to see any review actually have more than a few clips in a timeline. What happens when you're working on a real project on a 4k timeline with tons of clips? Do the machines handle that, plus grading, etc?

this might be my perspective but the Apple Devices have almost half the RAM (same for Iphone )than a comparable Android Device so if I am right...this applies to Macbooks so a Windows Device with 16GB is probably going to be equiv to a macbook air/mini/imac with 8GB, while the 16GB Mac is equiv to proabably a 32GB on windows device....hopefully... but still when you think about it for roughly 1k USD and use the macbook air 8GB for 4-5years its definitely gonna be worth it and wait till the M2 comes out and its probably outperform by lotssss just a question if anyone has worked with M1 Davinci and Windows if I export/project file on davinci on Macbook M1 can I work on a windows machine? o_o or does the rosetta thing kinda screw up the file image folder on external ssd that I bring from M1 Macbook--->Windows10

What if the Mac mini has a higher power rated cpu / gpu than the MacBook, since the last is a notebook and leaned toward energy and heat efficiency? And apple doesn’t show us number on that aspect. That would make the whole effort and comparison obsolete

Won't you notice the difference when you load up a longer timeline and you end up having a number of effects throughout the sequence. Isn't that where the software ends up using the allotment of ram given. In general I assume you would recommend the MacMini 16GB and 1TB SSD and some sort of Thunderbolt hub... the one that is backordered till May. There seems to be literally no point in buying an old Mac Mini with an outboard GPU.

Just bought the Mac mini especially for the M1 optimised Resolve, which I have downloaded. When I go to install the M1 tells me I need to install Rosetta and that it can't work on Intel-based software. Is this normal? Is it because the Mac does this on the first app you install? I phoned Blackmagic and they have no idea, btw.

Hi ! We’d love to see tests done with multiple monitors on the M1 Mac Mini ! We always use two to three monitors, which isn’t supposed to be supported, but can be achieved via displaylink connections, but it could slow the system down. That would be the deciding factor on wether to get the M1 or not for us. Edit : forgot to mention what system we were interested in

I’ve used dual monitors on the M1 mini. I don’t see others with this problem but the image from the thunderbolt port is not the same as the image from hdmi out. It’s almost not usable from a color/image accuracy standpoint.
