No, no that’s not the point at all. Godrick is a seriously tragic character. He’s supposed to be one of the GOLDEN lineage, but was born frail and weak, but with the power of the anchor rune he tried to live up to his past ancestors. However he could never be good enough, and so grew vile and twisted with expectation, disappointment, and loathing. This theme is like an epic hero’s theme, as Godrick wants to be, an epic and heroic demigod who will be elden lord like Godfrey of his golden lineage, but the theme is altered from being exactly that, hinted with tragedy and horror to reflect not only Godfrey’s failures and horrific acts, but the horror and tragedy of his character as well.

@@mjtechnoviking44 it seems murky, some claim he is a son of Marika and Godfrey while others claim he is of distant relation. @MrBerserker802 жыл бұрын
You were spot on with the Emotionless Cord since it perfectly encapsulates two things about Godrick: his entire character revolves around grafting dead body parts to himself, which then become re-animated, but they are still essentially dead, and said Emotionless Cord signals the start of phase 2 in which Godrick grafts a dead dragon's head to himself and reanimates it right in front of the player. What I really love about it, is also the visual artistry which complements the music: the dragon has been dead for a while, it's scaly skin has rotted away revealing bone and it's eyeless, giving a blank, lifeless stare.

@dr.pitmee_vocc23782 жыл бұрын
For context: Godrick is the supposed to be the SECOND main story boss in the game. But he (allegedly) is the first "Demigod" boss that you fight, in that sense, to use Dark Souls terminology, he's essentially your first "Lord of Cinder" type boss. However, he's an atrocity of his own creation - butchering innocents and literally grafting body parts to his body to become more powerful, because he was the weakest of the demigods from his birth and was forsaken by his bloodline. Godrick wrongfully proclaimed himself the "Lord of all that is Golden" when in fact he is probably the most far-removed from that position of any demigod we fight throughout the game. Godrick is an abomination and a pretender and a butcher. Yet he stands as the weakest of his kin and still poses an extreme challenge for being an early-game boss.

If you are analyzing Elden Ring scores for bosses, I highly recommend Starscourge Radahn's theme. Its such an epic piece, both the first and 2nd half of the song.

Another great analysis! I think Godrick's theme is the most over-the-top when compared to the other demigod themes. They are all intense, epic, dramatic, and powerful, too, but Godrick's theme feels like it's trying too hard and comes off as overbearing, intimidating, and horrifying, which fits Godrick's character. And, well, he is "over-the-top" considering his claim to fame/power is grafting body parts onto himself so he can become a strong beast of a man (but he isn't -- he still is the weakest of the demigods mentally, emotionally, and physically) Essentially, the theme is a mix of how Godrick views himself (powerful, regal, intense, intimidating) and how others view him (terrifying, disgusting, weird, twisted).

1:54 I guess that reflects how Godrick, little by little, grafted body parts to himself and that the resulting chord is as disturbing as the monstrosity Godrick has become. And the chromatic mode stuff in the 2 phase is like the decision to replace an arm with a giant dragon head

this is my favorite track of the Elden Ring ost, truly unbeliavable how good it is very good video, loved how you recognized the 7/8 time signature, that is what I was hoping for when I clicked on the video ahaha, anyway you earned a sub!

Loved fighting him not gonna lie! English voice actor did a great job portraying this Mad King who ripped the limbs off his relatives and attached them to himself. Definetly my Faiv fight in the game so far and design! Edit: Well Id say Ripping off his own relatives limbs is terrifying and deserving of this theme. Hes also one of the main bosses in the game so yeah hes a big deal. You probably know allready but the reason phase 2 is so unsetling is because he cuts his own arm off at the begining and then rips off the head of a dead dragon on his arena and attached it in the place of his missing hand and somehow reanimates it and fights you with it.
@nathanielleack48422 жыл бұрын
His VA was absolutely incredible. I started running his axe as soon as I could and I just hear him shout "I COMMAND THEE KNEEL" whenever I ready that shockwave. And his second phase cutscene as far as I was concerned was unskippable every time. That howl of pain when he lops of his arm is haunting

I have music literacy from doing band growing up in school until my senior year just to have something relaxing, fun, and an easy A during the day. When I tell you....I have learned so much just by watching yo channel. It's something they should focus mo on in public schools here in the states cause it doesn't make sense that only music majors in college/uni have all the fun in appreciating music on a deeper level. Genuinely proud that I was able to break down the first bit of the track like you would

that bit you mentioned of elden ring being a lot brighter of a game is really good. the fact that the main atmosphere of the game is quite calm this time just enhances the horrifying moments so much. i remember seeing a foggy bridge under a plateau with corpses hanging from wood all across it. in dark souls that would be expected, but here it just really sank in how awful that is. godrick as a character is an amazing example of this phenomenon. stormveil castle being full of grafted tarnished, limbs dangling from the ceiling and then the ruler himself being an abomination of body parts is just so revolting and i love it. i love his whole character of him feeling inadequate compared to his peers, so he created the idea of grafting in a desperate attempt to be closer to what they are. you can see it in the boss fight and with his theme. everything he says feels like it isn't directed at you, he's trying to prove his worth to his forefathers, using you as an example. and his theme is just so chaotic and harsh. it has a really rough feeling to it which fits with him perfectly

Imo Godrick is the second best fight in the game, I’ve fought every boss including mohg and that one swordswoman we don’t talk about, and I’ve gotten the most enjoyment out of Godricks battle. Godrick isn’t first tho Bc the radahn festival exists

Hello! Loved the vid. I wanted to recommend listening to Margot the Fell Omen’s OST, I feel his music portrays his character and the mood of his fight extremely well. Since he is the first major boss you encounter “for most players” he makes you feel lesser, hunted, as if you’re prey. You feel dread as he steps closer, and anticipate his next move as to not lose your whole health bar in a single hit. And the fact he is a tarnished hunter, makes it make all the more sense that you feel lesser and hunted. Edit: Hi! I went to go watch your other elden ring vid listening to the OST 4 months ago and wanted to say that the margot theme you heard wasn’t the one that made it into the game, they changed his OST. I personally like the new one more but the old one is practically just as good.

I love your curiosity of these bosses simply based on their musical themes. Funny enough, Godrick is weak both in game as a boss and in the lore as a demi god. The reason he’s portrayed as terrifying, to me at least, is that he is a tyrannical, sociopathic king that makes up for his lack of power, compared to his brothers and sisters, by grafting tarnished people, which is what you are in elden ring, to his body and using their small amount of Strength to hopefully accumulate enough of it that he will be recognized by the gods and maybe even given praise for achieving greatness. Godrick is the first Demi god you encounter in elden ring too so I think the composer and the developers really wanted to capitalize on that fear and anxiety new players might be feeling as they realize that they’re about the get brutally murdered a dozen or more times by the most powerful boss they’ve met at this point in the early game.

Fantastic! Your analysis is very easy to understand and helps appreciation of what's happening with the music on many new levels. The syncopation, the change in rhythm, the chromatic mode... these all highlight different parts of what makes Godrick so interesting. Ashamed of being born weak, he takes power from others, literally by grafting their muscular limbs onto his frail form (using every "note" available). He claims to be "lord of all that is golden", but is a complete tyrant and loved by nobody. He's a very sad and disturbed character with false visions of grandeur, chased out by his own family and subjects, and driven mad by an insatiable lust for improper power. Will definitely be checking out your other videos :)

Great video as always! I’d been eager to know your analysis of this unique piece. I was amazed by a dizzying pace of change in this piece which defied my expectations at every turn. This piece’s complex and varied buildup is perfect fit for Godric's patchwork figure. The ups and downs vibe expresses beautifully his insatiable desire to cling to the power and his nature as a weakling. This piece has vibes of heavy, dark and serious, yet playful which ridicules us somehow. I felt the same feeling in Ludwig’s theme from Bloodborne. It feels like a chaotic dance as if it have been turned too fast. So amazing piece. Thank you for this video, Davi!
