I remember going here quite a few times during the summer when me and my summer school program would come here for a field trip. We would usually just tour around most of the place and have a lot of fun. Such good times

My grandma used to love taking us there. She especially loved the sea lions. I still go every couple of years and live just south of it. I respect how Como shows some of their old enclosures and how they’re trying to do better now. That old building was either a WPA or CCC project.

A Lemur there once followed me around their cage and was pointing and screaming at my cigarette with his arms stretched out of the cage...lol He wanted it. It was so funny. People were laughing so hard. That was mid 2000s. Thanks for this video! It really brings me back. A lot has changed there but some is the exactly the same...I live out in WA now. That was when the Lemurs were in a circle gage thing outside.

We went to the Como Zoo this past July. Absolutely loved his place. Not a big zoo but every step was beautifully designed with lots of animals. The Apes to the Polar Bears to the Seal show. At was amazing. Also rode the coaster at Como town.

Awesome zoo! Your tour narration was great. I love AZA zoos, I haven’t been to many but I hope to see this one someday. I think it’s really cool that they have the old cages on display to show guests how far they’ve come, really interesting way to integrate history with the present.

Oh man.... I remember walking to that zoo from my high school after class, with my film camera, and developing the film and prints myself! I don't think high schools even offer photo lab anymore. I need to revisit Como Zoo now ☺ No more Sparky show I take it?

The Okinawa Zoo still keeps many of its animals in small cages. Only ever went once, but I was pretty horrified. You’d never suspect it, the opening is a lovely pond walkway, but then you come to concrete cages. Not every animals was in one-if I recall the goats and the elephants had slightly larger enclosures-but nothing was up to the standards of AZA accreditation you’d find in the states.

Hey Dave if you're ever in west Michigan And you're in Grand Rapids, definitely check out John ball zoo. It's the Zoo I grew up going to and at one point had the komodo dragon that was given to Ronald Reagan as a gift, however it has since passed. They have some pretty amazing exhibits. I think it would make a great video and you would absolutely love it! They also always have live exotic animal demonstrations that are interactive. You randomly see Zoo attendance walking African porcupines or walking around with a sloth. They also have a Monkey Island that is still there LOL

I was in Minnesota in 1995 and went to Como Zoo several times in the 2 and a half months I visited. My ex and I loved it. The big zoo was great, but Como was special. The dominant male gorilla used to escape just to steal cotton candy and then return to his enclosure. They used to have foot prints painted on the path that he took to and from the cotton candy cart that you could follow to see his "great escape" and "grand theft" lol It's been a long time and his name escapes me, but he sure was a gorgeous silverback. We were in love with the wolves there and spent many hours with them. One day I'd love to visit Como Zoo again. 💜🦍

I love stopping by Como Zoo every time I come up to the cities. Just a reminder, the Como Zoo is part of the National Association of Zoos and Aquariums- so not only is it a great place to visit, you get additional benefits if you're a member of a different accredited zoo here in the US.

I didn't know you were from St. Paul. Yes the como zoo is amazing and I remember going there as a baby or very small infant. Some of my earliest memories. Como zoo has made a lot of massive improvements and walking around the outside park is a blast from the past. I once brought my dog into Como zoo and it was the craziest and best zoo experience in my life. The zoo animals completely change and are absolutely captivated by dogs. Yes I've heard of the Gorillas escaping. When I brought my dog one of the gorillas actually ran up the net and pushed his back into it as far as he could and he stared back at us. I actually lifted my dog up and I was constantly followed by zoo staff and they told me not to do that but when stuff like that happened everyone gathered around for pictures and it was eventually too much attention that I couldn't stand so I just left. People were following me around everywhere. The tigers and other cats went nuts and the giraffes came over and stuck their heads all the way down so we could pet them and the ostriches and zebras were dancing and playing. It was literally nuts for everything and all the staff was completely on edge wondering if anything was going to happen.

Mine growing up was the Detroit Zoo. When I was going as a kid they had elephants, Rhinos just about everything. Of course always my favorite was the reptile building. But honestly now that I look back they really didn't have anything that great for the reptiles. People have more in there own homes then alot of zoos now.

Yeah there's a wildlife sanctuary or rescue whatever in Okeechobee Florida where this lady keeps big cats from African Serval to mountain lions or cougars. Also has some other mammal species and some rock iguanas. But they are in cement floors and surrounded by what looks like what tractor supply sells as one of there large dog kennels or chicken coupes. So about a 6ft to maybe 8ft metal fencing square. I won't say who but I know some people who has volunteered for her and sadly they left after the one day just couldn't go back. Now this was about 3 years ago. Haven't been back there since not sure what it's like now I hope they got some major upgrades but I do not know. They charge ten dollars for donations if u want to walk through the kennel area. 😥

Yeah when I was younger they had a massive Silverback gorilla at the Detroit zoo that was like over 500lbs was supposedly at that time was the second largest male Silverback in North America. I remember him coming up to the safety glass part of the enclosure he was absolutely massive he stood 6ft 5 tall. Ive always wondered if he's still there or even alive. I hope so
