On one hand, I want to sarcastically say "I can't believe this silly project made out of duct tape and a tube from the dollar store didn't consider fluid dynamics smh" On the other hand, I'm sure there's a way to do this "right" and I would expect server farms are already using it, and I'd like to see what such a unit would do to the temperatures of an average consumer-grade PC

0:21 BTU stands for British Thermal Units and it rates, in the most layman terms, how powerful an A/C unit is at trying to cool a space (higher number means higher cooling capacity). 14K is ok for an apartment living room or a relatively large bedroom.

The problem is, you’re only directing the cold air at one little point of the radiator so the radiator has much less time to cool the hot liquids from the CPU. Think about putting one ice cube on your arm vs dunking your arm in a bucket of ice cubes. Sure, one ice cube is still very cold, but a lot of ice covering more area is much colder. In this situation, you may have gotten better results just situating the radiator directly in front of the AC unit in a way that the entire radiator was being cooled directly. Think about how 240mm radiators with two fans is more effective than 120mm radiators. Also, you even mentioned how cold the air was coming through the radiator, that just means it’s passing right through the one area it’s cooling and remaining cold, the rest of the radiator was probably quite warm by comparison. This also comes down to that particular AIOs ability to effectively transfer heat. If the liquid in the AIO loop is very cold from the AC unit but your CPU is 3-4 times hotter, that means the AIO is being quite restrictive to the thermal transfer.

Maybe I'm being silly, but since it's an AIO on a test-bed, why not just put the AIO directly onto the output of the A/C? No tube to restrict the A/C's airflow. Doing that, you could build a custom loop with as big a radiator as you can get.

I conducted a similar 'experiment' over the summer with my portable air conditioner. I placed it on a crate of beer and directed the adjustable vents toward my PC. I had only removed the side panel, and the graphics card is mounted vertically, so the cold air from the air conditioner flowed directly onto the 3 fans of my RTX 4080. The RAM (G-Skill 6000 @ 6800 MHz) normally ran at 55-60 degrees Celsius. This time, the memory was at 35-45 degrees max. Despite heavy overclocking, the graphics card didn’t even reach 65 degrees Celsius at the 'hotspot' (normally 90+ degrees)! The GPU temperature consistently stayed below 60 degrees at full load, usually around 55. Before, it was between 75 and 80 degrees Celsius. Since the radiator is mounted at the top of the case, the cold air could also be nicely drawn in through the open case and help cool the radiator. I couldn't achieve a higher delta on my CPU than in the video either. That also made a difference of a maximum of 10, sometimes 15 degrees. Still, that's not insignificant... ...but considering the additional power consumption of the air conditioner at 2500W, not very efficient I'd say ... 🤪

Lowest it goes is 5-7 *C and its dry air coming out, I think there should be no issues with condensation. Moisture condenses on fins of the condenser / evaporator inside AC, that's why it has tube to drip water out of it. So you can pump that dry air straight into PC case, without worries.

I think he meant condensation around the CPU block. Even though it's dry air hitting the AIO, the fluid in the AIO can still make condensation around the CPU if the temps get too low vs ambient temp... I think but then again, I'm no expert, just going with what makes sense to me.

This is how I ran my gaming rigs in the olden days (Athlon 800Mhz+GeForce 2) before cobbling together a junkyard chiller. Other 'tasteful' mods included the old desktop fan on high ducted to the CPU and dremeling fan cutouts through the case (where structural integrity would support).

I did this back in 2004 with my gaming pc that was sporting a lousy Geforce 6600GT. The thing would thermally runaway until it hit 100c and then freeze up. The little tiny 486 cooler they stuck on there with the cool Doom 3 logo just wasn't cutting it. I was desperate to game on a friday night while all my friends had girlfriends and stuff. I had set up a bench to place the PC on with the side panel off and had the vent to the A/C blowing right inside the case. I completely duct taped it all so it was air tight. It kept my pc from bursting into flames and the GPU temp down to high 70's. It would hit 80 to 85 every once in a while but what really started to suck was the condensation was insane inside. It was like a rain forest in there and once water started dripping down my motherboard the entire system shut off. I ended up minimizing my gaming experience on this pc until I got a Zalman GPU cooler installed. The very first cooler and the last time I replaced one on my GPU.

I'm an HVAC TAB (Test and Balance) technician for the past 3 decades, all you've managed to do is freeze up the coil on the window unit. When you reduce the airflow across the coil it's going to cause the coil to freeze over and overheat the space temperature. The temperature sensor is in the return/filter section. You'd get far better performance by removing all of that hilarious cardboard and just cool the room down to 65 degrees F and put a fan blowing over the AIO condenser. A low leaving temperature at low volume doesn't necessarily outperform a higher temperature at higher volume.

I'm feeling like there's missed opportunities for some Stern Anna cutaways lately. Like a couple of vids ago Dawid dropped the line "So I spent the afternoon gaming." and I was just waiting, WAITING!, I could visualise the snapping to a shot of a Stern Anna with crossed arms sporting a scowl, then cut back to a sheepish Dawid, physically shrinking and tries to return to focusing on the computer. Now in this one; a closeout of Dawid being super cheery posing next to his kiddy construction, Stern Anna walks in "HEY!" like she's been away in meetings all day to return to... this. And Dawid's torn between being happy-proud to the camera and sheepish to Anna off to one side. XD

Another choice would be to raise the PC directly in front of the AC and tape the AIO across the outlet of the AC unit flat, so that it would blow through all of it. Also, the temps you are seeing are measured at the CPU, which is a reflection of the heat they generate pretty much no matter what you do. It takes a whole lot of thermals to get past that magic number and get the temps to go down.
@Lauriemine

for the mark 2 version, do a custom water-cooling loop with large enough hoses (and longer to reach the table) to a few radiators mounted across the entire front of the ac air outlet. i reckon that would work best as that air box causes a lot of restriction, fingers crossed!
@deanchur

Can we get a version 2? I'd like to see the entire frontal area of the AC unit being taken advantage of (instead of most of the outlet throwing cold air into cardboard), and having 2 tubes, one for each fan on the AIO, to see what the effects of that is.

ha! i did this for a while a couple of years ago! (10,000 btu window unit) but i was able to have the radiator up by the window unit output instead of having to duct it over. my duct work was taken from the ceiling for the window unit to inhale so it would stay on longer. i found that if i set the thing for "dry" it stayed cold longer but only ran the fan on low. but low what a higher cubic feet per minute than the fans for the aio, so i took those off it and just had them down by the computer blowing on the ram sticks. the only reason i took it apart was i didn't see much difference in how the computer ran even though it was for sure a lot cooler.

@matt6984
@matt6984 2 сағат бұрын
See radiators are ment to take the thermal energy from one place and distribute it to another. They dont work as well the other way sadly. So if the radiator is taking energy from the CPU and distributing it to the air, the air being colder doesn't have as much effect as you would think. Now if you could add a heat exchanger form the AC directly to the fluid of the AIO wooo that would work well

imo you should have cut the tube in half, then duct taped both tubes to the AC going to the liquid cooler radiator right behind where the two radiator fans were placed, that might have increased the cold air coming to the radiator, since one opening on the side might have caused the cold air to first slow down cuz of the cardboard blocking it’s way, and then had to redirect to the circular opening but i am not a AC PC cooler so take this suggestion with a grain of salt lol
