In this case (pun intended) it wasn't really Nvidia's fault. Look at that case! It's almost like they added those "cool" ventilation flaps as a joke. That case clearly has terrible airflow. Plus SLI/Crossfire was never great for cooling. The top GPU would always run hotter because it was being choked off by the bottom one.

The 2GB VRAM per card is never utilised as 4GB VRAM in total, it is limited to 2GB VRAM total when running SLi. If you want to know why VRAM doesn't combine in multi-GPU setups is simply because there's no interface fast enough to allow for data sharing that they could use in a practical manner i.e., without bulky or expensive connections. This is also on top of the fact that now there's another layer of memory that the GPU has to check (if it's not in its VRAM, it has to go to the other card's VRAM), which could induce more latency which is something you don't want in real-time 3D rendering. And since the "most compatible" multi-GPU rendering mode is alternate-frame rendering, they both need the same assets anyway.

So then what's the point? Genuinely asking.

I think the 600-series higher-end cards just ran hot in general. I think this was one thing that Nvidia did "FIX" in subsequent cards or starting with the GTX 1000-series cards when power efficiency became an important factor I guess. But the temps don't surprise me to be honest since that dual GPU has roughly the same type of cooling solution as a single GPU setup so it might be interesting to see how a single GPu 680 behaves in the same system. I'm thinking the cooler solution is just barely adequate to keep the GPus from boiling.

Would like to see you giving the PC a deep clean. Removing all unnecessary part inside, like sata treys & plastic parts.

It has an mATX motherboard and it might be a standard layout. The case could be a candidate for a mid-range retro sleeper build. A full case cleaning would be an ordeal.

I really enjoyed this video Dawid. The commitment to the Area 51/alien autopsy theme was great.

I owned one of those models back in like 2014. I still think this was one of the coolest case designs ever made

True story, I bought one of those AIO NOS on eBay like 8 years ago and was using it on my HTPC for another 6ish years, finally going to replace it but I'm planning on opening it up to see how much liquid is left and how gunked it is inside. If it looks OK I'm planning to install some new liquid and shelf it for future use. That thicc 120 fan is INSANE btw, please keep it to use on future experiments!

No one has ever accused Alienware for having great thermals in their desktops. I recently owned an Aurora R10 and I had to replace all of the system's cooling and add after market VRM heat sinks just to get the system stable.

I absolutely love old alienwares. (more so before dell) You should do a sleeper build in your area 51 7500! Love the cyborg green. I have a silver one myself. Loved this style of video Dawid. Keep it up!!!

That Alienwre Gaming has special features like years of dust and maybe smoke gunk build-up. That shouls be presumed at all cost.😊

I've got an Alienware Aurora R4 that I've upgraded the SSD, RAM, and Graphics card over the last 10 years and it runs shockingly well. It's obviously not my daily driver but I've still got it set up with the original 3 monitor setup I bought for it

I remember wanting this pc so bad... It was the bees knees of prebuilt at the time. I think before dell had their mitts all over Alienware to a disgusting degree. I'd still rock this with a newer GPU today like a 1060-1070 and be happy with it. it's a very unique case, even if it is essentially a heat radiator for your house. Great for Canadian Winter here in Ontario. I absolutely love this gem.

4:04 Back when 120/144Hz monitors were first coming on the scene, many of them only supported that refresh rate over DVI Dual-Link or DisplayPort. Not having an HDMI output on the 690 sort of seems like an intentional handicap given the timeframe.
