I've worked in IT for years now and I've never understood why the ventilation on OEM towers is so dreadful. They make some really neat design choices with cable management, board layouts and the like, but then they get stuck in the 1990s with a single crappy rear exhaust fan, a miniscule PSU fan and almost no gaps for air to get in. When the system's an i3 and integrated graphics you can understand, but when there's a high-end gaming or workstation GPU in there - which doesn't even evacuate rearwards - it just becomes baffling.

The fine print for many pre-built's include some form of clause for 'substitutions'. You get the sum of what you ordered, not the specifics (so 1x16gb instead of 2x8gb = close enough in their world). I'd still take a poke at them for the CPU cooler though to see how they respond, that is on the dark side of dirty for a substitution given the marketing material (where custom/high performance does not equal oem boxed). You could make a case for 'inadequate' given the temps, especially if you can get it hot enough that it down clocks on a sustained load.

It absolutely baffles me! They could literally improve their computers SO much by simply providing better cooling! It's nuts! And for those who say, well then people won't buy their flagship ones, well their flagship ones thermal throttle too! (at least they are much more usable overall). What should be in XPS is Alienware cooling, and what should be in Alienware is hardcore stuff that keeps the CPU and GPU at 100% load and boost at all times without throttling. That's what you should get for that money. The only ones that totally nailed desktop cooling WITH quiet performance are apple at the moment. My laptop was on its way out, so I decided to get a Dell XPS with an RTX 2060, 10th generation i5, and 500W power supply. I've been gaming regularly on it for a couple months now for at least a few hours a day, and here's my rundown of the system. - If you want to game, you MUST replace the CPU cooler and add more fans. After mods, my CPU stays at 45C and my GPU 60C even after a few hours of heavy gaming. I used a Vetroo V5 CPU cooler, which is cheaper than Dell's proprietary cooler / Noctua's equivalent cooler. The difference in performance between the three is negligible. - It is difficult to upgrade the RAM on these systems because RAM speed is capped depending on what processor you have. For i5s, the cap is 2666. For i7s, it will not go above 3000. I'd at least like to upgrade my single 16gb stick to two 8gb sticks, but I've heard of people having issues finding compatible RAM for this system. - Use zip ties instead of rubber screws to mount your fans. - The motherboard and power supply cannot be moved from the case. So if you want to move parts to a new case, you'll have to buy new ones. - On my order, the front panel's power button did not extend far enough to actually turn the tower on. I keep the front panel off. It isn't pretty, but ventilation is a lot better with the front panel off anyway. - ALL fans must be connected to the sockets on the motherboard that say "CPU FAN" and "FAN SYS". If you try to connect it to the power supply / any other socket, the BIOs will throw up an error. This means you will need fan splitters / extension cords. I have CPU FAN connected to the CPU cooler ( duh ) and top intake fan. FAN SYS is connected to the bottom intake fan and rear exhaust fan. It's not the BEST, but it plays triple AAA titles at medium-high settings, and I have not run into significant issues since using this as my gaming PC. I also upgraded from the stock 256gb Kioxia NVMe to a 1tb WD Blue. In total, I spent about $1000 on the tower + improvements. Happened to get the tower for $800 during one of those sales Dell runs about once every month. Pretty good given the current specs and the way the PC gaming market is right now.

I got two XPS at Christmas and ordering them was a nightmare. I cancelled two orders before getting a confirmation they would be delivered before February. But it meant changing the processors from i9 to i7 and getting the RTX-2070 instead of a 30 series. On my son's XPS, i opted to get a machine with the stock intel GMA and put my old GTX 1050Ti from my old gaming computer. It was the only way to get him a system capable of playing Cyberpunk. I eventually yanked the 1TB hdd and replaced it with a 1TB Samsung 970 SSD. I also took the 16GB of Ram out of my computer and put it into his giving him 32GB of RAM. I upgraded mine to 64GB.

It would have been nice if he could have done the review with a better cooler and proper ram setup. You can trash on Dell for the bad setup, but you can't trash the hardware that was gimped out of no fault of its own bad design etc. I'm pretty sure if it had proper dual channel ram and a better cooler your last-gen is not touching that 3070 unless you have a 2080ti. As the GPU temps were just fine despite it being a hotbox in the case so I doubt cooling is an issue on the GPU, the real question is if it performs at least reference specs from a hardware stance. Barring the GPU itself not being on par with reference and proper setup, the only bottleneck I see would be the cheaper ram being clocked lower.
