Imo its more than just frustrating, its downright shit. The whole reason someone would buy a prebuilt is so they dont have to worry about specifics like this, they want someone else to make sure the hardware is working as it should. The complete lack of care most prebuilt pc and laptop manufacturers have for their end product is straight up disgusting. "just throw some leds lights and a garish case over it, the morons will still buy it" Long term, stupid half thought out decisions like this are going to wreck them, but they dont care because of the short term gains they get by ripping people off. And yes. I do consider kneecapping the performance of a pc by half assed thermals and shitty rams config, ripping your customers off. They paid for that hardware, you have a duty to let it perform the best it can.

I noticed that stuff even on a Pentium 4 build with DDR2 and a Pentium 3 build with SDRAM I have here. When I buy a pre-built from a company like Dell, I know I will be damned with proprietory parts. But I would expect MSI who make mobo's and peripherals themselves, to use off the shelf components - especially the power supply! You didn't kill it Dawid, "clever" design killed it. (although plugging a 3080 into a bizarro-world 450W power supply is quite daring). Which raises the question...did the PSU have adeqaute connectors to even feed a 3080 ???

Besides it running in single channel, that single stick of RAM also had a single rank. Big difference when you have dual rank RAM vs. single rank. Linus did a video regarding this several months back and it accounted for as much as a 23 percent loss when in dual channel mode. Imagine how much single channel, single rank would do to kneecap performance.

Before you killed the power supply it really wasn't a bad prebuilt. I was expecting Dell levels of horrible when I saw that case and cooling design, but it surprisingly worked out.
@HappyBeezerStudios2 жыл бұрын
It would still do much better in a different case. Something with better airflow and a GPU mount that doesn't restrict access. Some nice SFF build would be possible.SO-DIMM usually means you don't have the space for desktop RAM, which leads me to believe that board itself was more designed for a small system.
@tweakpc2 жыл бұрын
But that is the difference between good and bad power supplies, with the latter one you can also dispose the rest of the hardware too. Also, you can replace the power supply that looks like Flex PSU
@recoilrob3242 жыл бұрын
FSP normally makes a pretty stout power supply that will test over the rated current...for a little bit before the fuse blows. Not exactly sure why someone would use a fuse rather than a circuit breaker....perhaps cost? Would have been interesting to have a watt meter on the system when it crashed...those 3080's really suck the juice.
@DawidDoesTechStuff2 жыл бұрын
Oh you think a fuse just popped? I’m going to buy a replacement PSU and see if we can get the 3080 running in there.

When i bought a budget pc for a few years back. That pc came with a 450 W power supply. It came with 1060 (2gb) card and only 8 gig of ram. I decide to do a medium budget upgrade to it. First i bought the same card as you used in this video. But i didnt use it after checking the box for minimum reqirements. The card needs a power supply on minimun 500W. Then i decide to go for KA 1660 ti (6gb) graphic card instead. That card "only" needed 400 W. Then i didnt need to change the power sypply. Then i put in one more 8 gb ram to it. So the specs are: Asus Rog. Clock speed 3ghz, 16 gb ram, 250 gb sdd, KA GTX 1660 Ti graphic card with 6 gb memory. My goal was to get it upgrade so i could play Goat Simulator 3 on it, and yes. It runs it wery well on full settings. A little bit old pc, but it still does the job. It accept 4K settings as well. Nice video David. 🙂

That PSU dying without tripping any protections is a bit concerning. The curious part of me says you should sent it to Gamers Nexus to see what happened.

So we could watch a 30 minute video of Steve doing an entire breakdown, including all the e-mails between him, the manufacturer, some relevant government department and next thing you know there will be a nation-wide recall of the flippy dick case based on Steve's demo of how it will explode on demand :-) :-)
@rdoursenaud2 жыл бұрын
What you call dying *is* tripping protection! The fact that the GPU survived is proof. There are protections that are single use (Think fuses) and needs replacement parts to work again.

It died so the other components could live. He's was trying to draw twice the wattage with those parts and that's the protection a £30 psu vs £600 worth of components is a big difference. A bad power supply would have killed everything.

That was an "interesting" internal case design. Steve at Gamers Nexus needs to get one of these. It may make his hair fall out. The 7700K was actually not doing bad. 80ishC is high but not totally crazy. I was surprised that little heatsink and remote heat pipe worked that well. You never mentioned how loud it was. You should have looked at the paste under the CPU cooler at some point. I wonder if a re-paste could help at all. The 3080 Ti would have been fine with that PSU if you just shut off the LEDs :)

The RAM change shows that Intel also benefits from fast dual channel memory. In fact, it goes back at least 20 years that faster memory gives you better performance, but in most cases the GPU comes first and the CPU second before the RAM in terms of what you actually gain.

I have this machine! Though, mine came with a 1080 GPU in it, and 2 sticks of 8gb (laptop) RAM. My issue was also the PSU. I cannibalized the 1080, SSD and HDD into my first effort at building my own PC (turned out great!), but I think I will hang onto this case and custom components in case I feel like making a project out of it sometime down the line. I am still enough of a little girl at heart that I think the Transformers head is pretty rad, and I'd probably regret it if I got rid of it!

Last year i bought a LENOVO IdeaCentre G5, because i was looking for a desktop/laptop to game on (GPU in old laptop died) and was actually waiting for a specific gaming laptop to be released, when i could buy this desktop for 45% of the price (was an error on a website but it got delivered). So i paid 432 euro for a OEM build (which is not great), but for so little money i had (in a time of crsis: high tech prices due tot shortages) an Intel i5 11400F, MSI 1660 Super, 512GB NVME SSD and 1x16GB RAM. After about a month i purchased a second (same serialnumber) 16GB stick and i had up to 80% more fps in games. Only downside is that other things can be a bottlenneck now, but my point is: i was amazed by the performance difference because of the second RAM stick.

You can buy a new PSU for it those Flex Powersupplys are fairly common and even a 700W 80 Plus Platinum from FSP is available so a 3080Ti wouldn't kill it. And I don't know this PSU type but there could be a glass fuse in it which is blown and may be replaceable so the PC would run again.
