Yes, the people are real. They were told this was a documentary and he spoke very little English. This is why everyone signed a release. But after the film was released, that's when the lawsuit started. The the only actual setup that's done here with a so-called stranger, is with Pamela Anderson. She was in on the joke from the beginning.

I rented a room from a 70-something proper English lady (who had immigrated to Canada decades earlier) between 2005-07, and one day, she asked me what were some popular films in cinema then, because she wanted to check out a matinee with her friend from church. I mentioned I'd just seen Borat, but also qualified that with a "it's probably not your kind of movie though." "Nonsense!" she said, and sure enough, the two of them saw Borat. Fortunately, she actually really liked it (I wouldn't call her sense of humour "subversive," but it was definitely a bit "naughty," as she would have said). I do think the extended nude fight scene was a bit of a shock, but the sheer lunacy of it (and the way it just goes on and on) made it her favourite scene. Unfortunately, I think her friend was traumatized for life by the film. Goes to show you that humour is subjective, and that sometimes people can surprise you.

I remember being in the theater when the nude scene started. There were at least 200 people in there and it was every range of emotion on display. Some people were crying they were laughing so hard, a dozen or so people ran out of the theater in disgust, MANY of the girls in the theater were screaming in terror like it was a horror movie; which made it even funnier to my friends and I. tons of people were saying they were gonna throw up (I heard someone shouting that a woman vomited but I have no idea if it was actually true accept to say that there were certainly men and women who were legitimately nauseous). And then there was a very loud group of bro assholes screaming homophobic slurs throughout the entire scene--which almost started a brawl in the first few rows because they kept up that commentary 10 minutes after the scene had ended. All of these emotions were LOUDLY VOCALIZED. It was the most outrageous audience reaction I have ever seen in a movie theater before or since.

He was great as Abbie Hoffman in The Trial of the Chicago Seven and he was also great in the Netflix miniseries series The Spy, about real life Israeli spy, Elie Cohen. From perusing your back catalogue, I can see that you've already covered a plethora of great classics...looking forward to checking those out!! I'm a little surprised to not find any of the Highlander franchise included..I was 18 when the first Highlander premiered in 1982...to this day, it is still one of my all time favorites. Christopher Lambert, Sean Connery and Clancy Brown,,,now that's a cast!! A reboot with Henry Cavill is on the horizon, but no one can ever play Connor MacLeod like Lambert. I've even let my hair grow out to emulate his look!! The TV sequel, [1992-1998] with Adrian Paul as Connors' cousin Duncan was also pretty damn good. If your not familiar, [it's a Canadian production] I hope sometime you might check it out...I expect you would greatly enjoy it.

Borat was Borat before this, but Yanks aren't the sharpest tools in the shed so they were still real people for the most part who weren't in on it - Pamela was but her security I don't think was.

God knows if you can show it on KZbin, but Bruno has to be the next one - there’s one scene that made me laugh so much I had to leave the cinema just to remember how to breathe!

One coincidence (or was it?) that happened during the theatrical run of this movie was that diplomats from the real Kazakhstan were in Washington D.C. at the time to speak with American diplomats and officials. They were desperately trying to convince their American counterparts that "Borat" was not from Kazakhstan and that his movie did not represent their country. 🤣

Saw this when I first started with my husband, we rented this movie that he already saw ,since then this is my go too movie when i want to hilariously laugh. Imagine we we're teenagers and now in are early 30s and it's still funny. You should definitely watch Bruno.
