Good day! Just a random question. Is it possible for a male gsd showline 4yr old to introduce bitework for sport protection? I know it's too late but, is it possible? THankS!

I don’t think so. How is his drive? Your better off starting with a younger dog. You can do OB with him to brush up on that but he may be too old for it. In my experience for the most part SL aren’t drivey enough to be able to do everything involved with IGP. It’s not just biting it’s tracking/advanced OB as well. I think it’s important to lay that foundation work in early. However It does not develop to the full extent until the dog is 18 to 24 months old and with some dogs not until they are 3 years old so I’m not saying it could never happen but it really takes a specific type of dog. Before actually competing you need to get his BH-VT .This tests the dog's scenting ability, but its mental soundness, and physical endurance.The BH is a degree for traffic-safe companion dogs that tests the dogs temperament in and around people. It includes basic formal obedience - heeling on and off leash, sits, downs and recalls - as well as practical tests of the dog's character in everyday situations.

So I’ve recently took my Beauceron puppy to her first IGP training day and there was an adult showline GSD bitch there. She had done a few days tracking wise but I did hear one of the trainers say “you’re going to really struggle to get good results from her. Even though her drive is high for a show line, it’s still not near a working dog drive.” They haven’t progressed to bite work yet, but by the way she was talking she was trying to politely deter him from pursuing IGP with a showline
