Dufton to Alston
19.5 miles
3500 feet ascent
Join me on an epic adventure as I take on the Pennine Way thru-hike in October/November, exploring the stunning landscapes of England's most iconic long-distance trail. This hike is an unforgettable journey through rugged moorlands, serene valleys, and picturesque villages, all while braving the unpredictable autumn weather. Whether you're a seasoned backpacker or new to long-distance hiking, this video will provide you with essential insights and inspiration for tackling the Pennine Way.
In this video series, I cover everything from my preparation and gear essentials to the challenges and breathtaking scenery I encounter along the trail. Watch as I navigate through the diverse terrain, experience the quiet beauty of the English countryside, and share tips for hiking in cooler, wetter conditions. The Pennine Way, stretchingover 250 miles from the Peak District to the Scottish Borders, is a true test of endurance, and this hike in late autumn adds an extra layer of adventure with its shifting weather and reduced daylight.
Whether you're planning your own Pennine Way adventure or just love hiking and backpacking vicariously through others, this video will immerse you in the raw and beautiful experience of the Pennine Way in October and November. Don't forget to subscribe for more hiking and backpacking content!

Well done Christina! Cross Fell is a beast. And it looked so forlorn. You did really well. The music pick was again excellent!

Great series of videos. I don't know how far you are on the PW, but if you are not yet at Bellingham and are planning to camp there, I consider that the first camping site you come to is nicer than the one in the village. You also need to stock up on food here as well, the last shopping opportunity before you get to Kirk Yetholm.

This I think was my highest climb ever until I did some hiking in Scotland. Luckily for me it was mid Summer so it was warm and clear all day to Alston the views from the top of Cross Fell was amazing, only beaten by a cup of Coffee at Greggs Hut and the slow decent into the village. I got psyched out when the guide book said that this was the hardest day, when it was no harder than every other day and by the time you're doing cross fell you're trail fit anyway. Cross fell is frustrating because of the false summits and the weather up there can be unique. I was glad to get to Alston though. No doubt you'll have done the ups and down of hadrians wall today and be in Greenhead and you have almost finished. Just Bellingham, Byrness and the cheviots ( hut 2 is a good stopping point ) and your kissing the wall of the border hotel.

You did well Christina walking to Alston in daylight hours, you must have got your head down, that track from Greg's hut to Garrigill seems like it's never ending, it's a pity you had no views from Cross Fell, if clear you can see over to the Lake District, you went upmarket last night getting scampi rather than a fish, hope you enjoyed.

When you get to Byrness if lucky the Forest View Hotel might be open and you can camp there as well. This place is so well known to PW hikers. If not the local caravan site has a spot for campers, you will pass this site before getting to Forest View.

This seems appropriate: No sun - no moon! No morn - no noon - No dawn - no dusk - no proper time of day. No warmth, no cheerfulness, no healthful ease, No comfortable feel in any member - No shade, no shine, no butterflies, no bees, No fruits, no flowers, no leaves, no birds! - November! by Thomas Hood Keep going. 🚶🏻‍♀️

There are places on the Pennine Way where waterproof socks are so useful, I always carry a pair with me, I dislike wet feet.

Have to say that I didn't like the music on this video, rather sombre and foreboding, didn't match your cheerful persona. Looked like a long hard walk and not much to look either in the mist, a hard working day.

@wandering_not_lost the music reflected how i felt surrounding the fells where it was cold, windy and misty. And how i dreaded the constant uphill. :)

@@hikersheep Yes I understand, it actually did convey the dread and slightly spooky atmosphere very well. I hope the sun sines for the rest of your PW, I'm enjoying the videos. Thank you. Can I ask what umbrella you carry and if you would recommend it, I've never carried one but I thought I might for the West Highland Way which I'm planning for next year.
