Day 138 - Gambling Addiction
“I have the right to do anything,” you say-but not everything is beneficial. “I have the right to do anything”-but I will not be mastered by anything.” 1 Corinthians 6:12
I used to have a major gambling addiction. I never looked at it that way though. It started in my high school days. There was nothing like the rush of winning "free money.” Except, it was never free. Besides the stress of games that could come down to the last moments and bets being decided on fluky, meaningless plays, my attention and focus was captured by it. Between Vegas and online betting, and the popularity of things like poker and fantasy sports, thanks to ESPN airing both, it only got worse. And it seemed normal, because that’s what the world does, it normalizes things that steal our joy and have us chasing highs that are impossible to maintain.
“Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.” 1 Timothy 6:9-10
Now in Arizona, and I’m sure other major league baseball stadiums soon to follow, there’s a new Caesars Sportsbook at Chase Field.
It’ll be the first in-person retail betting site at an MLB stadium. Diamondbacks president and CEO says legalized sports betting contributed to increased MLB ratings.
With worldly, anti-christ agendas already being normalized through the industry of professional sports, it’s already been tougher to make an escape from the world to enjoy a game. Now at games, it’s going to be that much easier for those with an inclination to wager money on games to do just that.
“They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity-for “people are slaves to whatever has mastered them.”
2 Peter 2:19
As this world normalizes and glorifies more things to distract us from truth and a life lived in service to God and others, we need to guard all the more against falling for it. I for one, don’t want that temptation anywhere near me, but the enemy certainly does.
