Second Chance Equine Association - In day 2 of the video series, my goals for this session were: establish leadership by having her follow me, introducing her to the halter and lead rope, and desensitizing her to the stick and rope.

I really miss your videos Scott. I wish you'd give us more. You're one of the only few (very few) I've seen that actually shows us using a green horse.

Hey Scott ~ I rescued a 5 yr old Arabian/National Show Horse from slaughter two weeks ago. He is skinny, was covered in mud, and very fearful of humans. I bought him just because I saw something special in this little guy. I tried several different techniques on him but nothing and I mean NOTHING worked. I came across your videos and saw the same personality in Fancy as I do in Memphis. I tried your videos/tips and in one day I had a completely different horse. You wouldn't believe the difference

What a Cutie. So funny that horses have two sides of the brain like they're two different horses on the left and right side.

I rescued a gelding about a month ago and was going really well with him until some unknown people went into his paddock for no reason tied him up and took off his rug :( now he's being silly again and my farrier was teaching me so e things today and telling me to do most of the things you're doing with your girl. Except you do it in a much kinder way. Thanks for all the tips I'm going to try them out tomorrow!! :)

Hey Scott. Just wanted to thank you for the fabulous set of videos that you and your team have put together showing the process you use to train horses. Fancy obviously learned well and you clearly have a real love of the horse. They relate well to you. I have quite a few horses that I need to prepare for general trail riding and the to sell on. I plan to follow your steps and ill let you know how we get on if you're interested. Arthur Yeo from New Zealand.

This may be. A fear issue. I teach the horse to catch me first in the round pen. I introduce the halter by placing the throat latch around the neck first so you can hold the horse until it relaxes, the remove it. Repeat this until the horse is accepting it in a calm manner. Then progress by scooping the nose of the horse into the halter. The remove it as you did with just the throat latch.

Well, I have two ponies in training. One is up to the first few rides in the arena and the other is just at the beginning of learning to follow a lead etc. The pony under saddle is a little reluctant to stop, but I think we are getting there. I will keep you posted.

@KUCIRKA060102 Start off by twirling the rope like we did with the stick and string. Find a comfortable starting point for her, when she stands, stop twirling and rub her with the rope. Continue the twirling until your eventually right next to her. Then try throwing the rope over her back. By this time she should be less fearful of the big old rope snake. Little steps and patience. U can do It!

@Mtthyman Head shyness can be erased just like any other fear based behavior. Step 1 pretend you are flicking water from your fingertips at your horses face, keep the pressure of that action on until it relaxes and stands still. Use the approach and retreat just like I did in spooky objects video. Then find something else, like a hat to wave at it's face, same same. Then find something else. The horse learns on the release of pressure so don't stop until he's standing calm. (part 1)

Just finished an hour on day two with Mister. The only thing he doesn't do well with is coming in to me. He will stop and give me to eyes easily, he did follow the leader and my past problem with haltering him was much easier(we were in the round pen though so he didn't have far to go).

@Skylarkien Watch what I do with the rope in the videos. I wrap them all around the legs and the rest of her body as well. We are teaching the horse to STAND STILL and the rope will go away. Use the rope to pick up her feet, lead her by the foot using a rope looped around her foot, in general play with the feet (safely) and your horse will be fine. Hobbling is also a way to desensitize the legs but unless your are really good with horses let a trainer do it.

I noticed that on Fancy's right side, the big area of white there, a part of it is in the shape of a horse head, or a wolf head. Something like that.

Yeah, we had something like that happen to a horse at our stable (she wasn't hurt, just a bit shaken). By controlled situation, do you mean something like loosely looping a rope around the leg to teach a horse that if it stands still nothing bad will happen, or something else?

Question : what would you recommend for a horse that does amazingly well with everything except the rope desensitizing ? The response is an even mix of sometimes she bolts away and tries to run around in the round pen, and the other half of the time she almost jumps into my arms - though when she does this she turns both eyes on to me and then stands perfectly still as long as I don't 'throw' the rope at her again..... any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!

I was wondering, since your talking about the sensitivity of the legs, how can you teach a horse not to freak out if it's legs are caught by something (i.e. loose reins)?

I am working with a horse that has never had a halter on before. I'm not sure what her age is. No one has been able to get a halter on her. She is also really scared of a lead rope. Do you have any suggestions on how to go about getting a halter on her? I've had the halter and lead rope in my hand when she came up to me and she was sniffing it, licking it, and trying to grab it. I put both in front of her face and she didn't get spooked at all. She seems to really like me so I am going to try to halter break her. I have never done this before. Little bit about her: She is a rescue. I have heard that she might have been abused. She was rescued with 30 other horses and she is in a pasture with 18 of them. I have no way of getting her out of the pasture unless she lets me get a lead rope loosely around her neck and lead her to the round pen. The round pen isn't close enough to get her there without guiding her.
