I just did that same section on Friday. I slept in my tent by the shelter area and had to hike back to the hostel and get off the trail... The snow was just too deep.... Good luck on your hike ..

Haha, that snow on the branches hanging over the trail is maddening 🤣! I just kept my rain jacket and hood on so it didn't spill down my neck. I remember that climb out of Standing Bear... rough. The thought of Hot Springs kept me going though. Stay strong brother!!!!

Ah memories of that shelter. A bunch of boy scouts came in after us driving rain and heavy thunderstorms so they and overpacked the shelter The plywood is not at all flat. Woke up throughout the night with people half way on top of me

Great to see you back. Be safe, you can do it. You should get plastic bags to put over you socks so they don't get wet. Be safe out there, still plenty of snow.

Its nasty up there. Two others ahead of you have quit because of the deep snow. The conditions are scary dangerous. I hope that you are carrying extra food and a couple of firestarters. In these conditions, a fire can make a big difference to dry your clothes and warm you up. We used to warm rocks to take to bed to be more comfortable. When you got cold, you took the cold rocks back to the fire and got some hot ones. Good Luck, Rick

@@michellevey9608 I don't see how you start this early. Last year was not to bad but year before we had one nor'easter after another. Feet of snow in that area over and over. I know you want to beat the bubble as far as you can but this can be the result. Smokies closed for at least 2 weeks more I heard this morning.

Glad that you returned. Really a surprise since others threw in the towel, understandably what with the conditions. But I guess you see a fair amount of snow in your neck of the woods, so you're used to it? But you have a good plan going forward. It's not unheard of that a hiker skips ahead, or gets skipped due to circumstances. You can get the Smokies in the future. Well, I won't say stay safe, you know what you're doing. You have my admiration doing this trail at all and in the winter. I'll just say "I'm rooting for you".

Maybe January and February aren't the best months to go on the AT. I hiked in snow that deep last week and it slows you way down but I had the advantage of returning home to a warm place. Hope you got warmed up. John from MI

So you skipped the Smokies. Probably a good decision. You need Goretex shoes for snow like that! How are you going to avoid frostbite with wet feet?
