The Catechism in a Year (with Fr. Mike Schmitz)

Күн бұрын

This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
This summary of the Catechism’s teaching about the Anointing of the Sick is concise and rich. This holy anointing brings us hope and courage as we endure illness and the difficulties of old age. While we pray for healing of body and soul, this sacrament also prepares us for death. Fr. Mike ends this episode by explaining three practices of the Church that help her members prepare for death. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1526-1532.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!
Although not tax-deductible, the financial support we receive goes towards the creation of podcasts and videos that help Catholics grow in their faith. If you’d like to learn more about what we do with gifting, go to AscensionPress.... Thank you and God bless you!

Lord, I am growing old. In case of my grave illness and in danger of death, please grant me the grace to receive the Sacrament of Anointing and the Viaticum. Meet my needs and fill me with the Holy Spirit. 🙏 Help us all to prepare ourselves for the inevitable by granting us the grace to examine our conscience every day and helping us to give up our inordinate needs every week on Fridays and every season during Lent and Advent. Lord, help me to reflect on the necessity of preparing myself for the journey to the Father's House. 🙏

God's timing is impeccable Yesterday 28th of July 2023 my precious mother died. She'd had the last rights a few days earlier and my siblings didn't want me to call the priest again 😢 I was able to pray the rosary with her in her mother tongue just before she slipped out of verbal conciousness, and at the end of every decade she clearly said AMEN. Then a few hours before she passed my siblings and my Dad (93) went to stretch their legs and using my Ibreviary app(recommended by many of Father Mike's listeners) I prayed the prayers for dying out to her. And the small bottle of Holy water I have in my bag was taken out and I blessed her. I'm sad but not bereft. My siblings asked why I'm so at peace I explained what my last personal time with mum was. Now they too have more peace. Thankyou Fr Mike for teaching us again the true Grace of God's infinite love. RIP Mum Thankyou for bringing me up with a love for God

I am listening to you on the catechism. And I did your Bible of the day. I especially liked your words on the last rites. My husband showed our family how a man of faith dies. He received holy communion many times during his Las 2 months of life as well as the sacrament of the sick. When Father Joel gave him the apostolic blessing tears steamed down his face as he desired it so much. He spent his last 4 days praying the rosary with his family and up to the last day told every member of his family he loved them. After he talked to the last member he died during that nite ready to meet his Lor I pray I am so blessed. I am almost 92 and take just one day at a time. Dear Mary when the time comes bring me t o your son.

"For you yourselves know full well that the day of the Lord will come just like a thief in the night." --1 Thessalonians 5:4 The humorous reply to the traditional evangelical proclamation, 'Jesus is coming!' is "Look busy!" But Fr. Mike is acumenous in telling us to not only 'look busy,' but actually get busy in our preparation: to transition, to lose the duality of our essence, to shed our body and navigate with our spirit --to die. We must repeatedly check to ensure we're wearing "clean underwear." i.e., we must continuously check and adjust to ensure our heart and soul is "clean" and pure.

Praying for you. 🙏 THE MOST POWERFUL HEALING PRAYER BY ST. PADRE PIO Heavenly Father, I thank you for loving us. I thank you for sending your Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, to the world to save and to set us free. I trust in your power and grace that sustain and restore us. Loving Father, touch Dolores now with your healing hands, for I believe that your will is for her to be well in mind, body, soul and spirit. Cover her with the most precious blood of your Son, our Lord, Jesus Christ from the top of her head to the soles of her feet. Cast anything that should not be in her. Root out any unhealthy and abnormal cells. Open any blocked arteries or veins and rebuild and replenish any damaged areas. Remove all inflammation and cleanse any infection by the power of Jesus’ precious blood. Let the fire of your healing love pass through her entire body to heal and make new any diseased areas so that her body will function the way you created it to function. Touch also her mind and her emotion, even the deepest recesses of her heart. Saturate Dolores' entire being with your presence, love, joy and peace and draw her ever closer to you every moment of her life. And Father, fill her with your Holy Spirit and empower her to do your works so that her life will bring glory and honor to your holy name. I ask this in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

July 28, 2023 Please pray for Souls in Purgatory. Go ahead, just take about 30 seconds to help save a soul that maybe is your family member or friend! Go forth and help save! Here is the prayer: (According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory.) The Prayer of St. Gertrude Eternal Father, I offer Thee the Most Precious Blood of Thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal church, those in my own home and within my family.
Amen. God would reply to St. Gertrude that He would use whatever was offered to Him for the faithful departed, according to His inclination to show pardon & mercy.

fr mike, you truly are a gift! your enthusiasm for scripture and the catechism is infectious! thank you for all you do! i think about death everyday. i try to do good and do it for God's sake. i don't want to offend Him. i think about my judgement..that my life hasn't produced enough fruit to warrant Heaven. but i often speak to God, Jesus, Holy Spirit , Mother Mary, St. Joseph, Angels, Saints, Apostles and Martyrs, my Guardian Angel, and, the souls in Heaven and Purgatory. i thank them for all the ways they've worked in my life from conception to this very moment and that i need all of them..every single second of every minute of every hour of every day..forever. for i'm nothing without any of them. i need they're help

This podcast on the Anointing of the Sick, is an invitation to reflect on our own death. 3 ways to have the practice for death are: Daily Consciousness examen, by actively saying 'yes' to God; Giving up something of an inordinate need every Friday of the year; Practice dying during every Advent and Lent. 🙏

I have a way of saying no to god. I am only working from 10 am to 4pm so i have actually time to attend daily Mass in our Parish at 8 am. But due to schizophrenia and a drug i am taking called seroquel(sedative drug), i can´t wake up before 9 am. So i am praying constantly to be able to attend Mass at 8 am but i fail almost every day. Sometimes i wake up early and attend that Mass. So i have a feeling of guilt on this matter and i feel like i am saying no to god. Its such a struggle. I even think that my life would get better if i attend that Mass at 8 am every day.

No, you are not failing; you haven't found a way to succeed in your goals yet. The drugs are powerful to help you, yet also cause you to not to succeed in what you want to do. Continue to pray for strength, I will also join your prayers for you to achieve your beautiful goal. 7/28/2023

Just you thinking and wanting to do better is progress. Keep praying that the God help you find a solution 🙏. I've been stuck in situations where I just go to God and tell him "I give this to you, figure it out and help me".... And almost immediately The Holy Spirit lights up a different path. God bless you. Maybe there's an evening Mass after work somewhere.

I want to be in a mode of marriage; to the Lord; rather than routine prayers...I listened Fr Mikes recent homily. In sickness or in health, - you have a friendship; not that you are haphazardly in God's thoughts; as what we do to God; I offer my vocation of life; and MOST IMPORTANTLY DEATH; where the ceremony takes place; crossing over from Phylial love to Agape Love; ETERNITY WITH THE GROOM. I believe St Joseph had unusually the Agape Love for the VM; where we get it at death; but I was filled with the Holy Ghost - and was exactly as in Acts; the Holy Hurricane entered into my mouth filling every fiber in me; wrote on this already. That was Agape Love; leading me to Catholic Faith; crash landing here. Amen

Well Father you inspired me to wrote to you,I'm 75, we had mother Cabrini nuns that read to us, never had the catechism in hand, and honestly not paying too much attention except when the ruler came out. This has been amazing full of info. My aunt died in my house in January and it was so peaceful as my priest came and sent her over to the otherside.

My husband was a diabetic and on dialysis. At an appointment with his nephrologist (kidney doctor), the doctor said he needed to do what the specialists told him. "We don't want you to die." My husband said, "Doc, I'm not afraid to die, because I know where I'm going." I was so stunned to be a witness of this moment. Rewind a number of years. My professor said no to a grade I wanted and suggested I come back the next year and repeat the course. But, during my semester off, I met the man who became my husband. Because I accepted a NO I was able to say YES to someone else. The ironic part was both of them were named David. My husband gave me a beautiful gift of the Catholic faith, which was improved or enhanced by my son-in-law William. And I'm working on it every day thanks to Ascension and the BIY and CIY teams. Thanks Father Mike.

Day 209 takeaways: Summary: Practice for death everyday. Make an examination of conscience everyday. Ask yourself if you just talk ABOUT God or invite Him into ever aspect of your life. Rid yourself of all bad habits.

Father Mike & Ascension, I am grateful that you all are doing the CIY. I am behind, but still pushing play. I'm taking care of my mom. She has Alzheimer. Her other health conditions are under control. She doesn't take holy communion, because she doesn't recognize that Is the Body of Christ. If I understood correctly, I can ask for the Anointing of the Sick because if her age. How about the Apostolic Pardon? Can I ask for her to bless with it too? Thank you! God bless you all 🙏

In Ireland we always had the Sacrament of the Sick as part of the pilgrimage to Knock. Recently it is being introduced into a parish Mass as a healing Mass. However the priest does not always emphasise that it is a Sacrament and it is for the seriously sick, so everybody (or almost everybody) goes up for anointing thinking it is a blessing. Is this the correct way to administer the Sacrament?

Day 209 A good practice to do is Examination of Conscience. At the end of the day, to look at our life and see where did we say Yes to the Lord, where did we say No to the Lord or whether we were indifferent. We may see that we haven’t necessarily said No to the Lord but the question is were we indifferent to the Lord……
