Lord Jesus, I humbly pray for myself, Father Mike, & all the people participating in the Bible-in-Year podcast. I do not know all their needs, but you do, Lord. I offer them to you with confidence that you hear our prayers. May your word take deep root in our hearts & transform our ways of thinking, discerning, and acting. May your grace open our ears to hear & understand and revere & treasure both the Old & the New Testaments which God has prepared for all who desire to enter his kingdom. Please send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness & humility, & with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Please give me the grace to set aside my intellect and my know-it-all attitude and let your Word speak to my heart and my soul. Help us to be diligent students & faithful disciples of your Word. I have never forgotten the names of these three because when I was young my mum used to march us up the stairs at bed time and say Shadrach Meshach and Intobedyougo !! Frivolous I know but every time I see the name Abednego I read it as Intobedyougo. Happy memories. The courage and faith of these men is immense, I remember a sermon on this story many years ago, and our lovely pastor got very emotional at the mention of the fourth man in the fire, I think we all had a tear in our eye that day.

In 2:49 Daniel requested that Shadrach, Meshac, and Abednego be made prefects over the affairs of Babylon. Then in 3:2 King Nebuchadnezzar only sends for the prefects….etc. So Daniel would not have been there.

My biggest takeaway was that in their MOST INTENSE TRIAL, they let out their most intense (and eloquent) PRAISE. A model for us to live our lives: turning our focus back to God, His Power, His Holiness, His Love -- during our most intense struggles.

The fiery furnace reminds me of Purgatory. Hananiah Azariah and Mishael admitted they had sins they confessed as Azariah spoke of but they sang in the fire. They sang a song of Zion in a strange land--wow! They came out totally unscathed purged of the sin they confessed to the one that Nebukanezer said was like the son of the gods.

In the same spirit as the father with his prodigal son, the priest must reconcile sinners who have gone astray but seek a way back to God. As a father listens to his child, so must a priest listen to his spiritual children, providing counsel and consolation. We call Pope Francis, pope Which, means Papa.

Thank you Fr Mike for showing us how to be steadfast in our faith and trust in God in this chapter of the Bible. This is one of my favorite verses in the Bible where I believe something miraculous happened to the three men. God showed how He saves those who are faithful specially in the midst of difficult and seemingly hopeless situation. Check out the Scriptural reading the Queen of Peace lector read at the Ist Communion/Confirmation Mass on Aug 27. Our pastor chose a Reading from the Prophet Ezekiel, 36:24-28, which Fr Mike read a few days ago: "...I will give you a new heart and place a new Spirit within you, taking from your bodies your stony hearts and giving you natural hearts. I will put my Spirit within you and make you live by my statutes..." How fitting!
