It is truly amazing how fast a bear can " bear paddle"! It's great you got to film it. Thanks, great video! Oh , good job on the single carries. 👍

When I saw it swimming in our direction I thought for sure we'd see it up close and personal before long. But when I hollered for my family to come take a look, it turned back heading in the opposite direction. My daughters eyes were as big as saucers when she saw that bear.

Wow, you guys DID fly over that portage ;-) ... at least it didn't take much video to cover it in any case. Looks like that campsite was well worth the pain of the portage. Congrats on the bear footage. I've seen a handful of them (always sows with cubs) but have never been able to capture them on video. It was great to hear the loons on this cold December night. Loved the segment when Ams took over the video. Thanks for another break from winter.

Nibimocs did you have your first Christmas in the new house? I bet the snow up there is gorgeous. No, I didn't video the whole long portage. I was carrying 3 paddles which made video making kind of inconvenient. The price of single portaging is busy hands, But the reward is a happier kid 😉 I saw and heard fewer loons this year. I wonder if you experienced the same? Seeing that bear was a fluke. I needed a few minutes away to count to 10 so I walked towards the other end of the island for a couple minutes. Wonder if the bear would have came into camp if I hadn't made noise? It was coming over to the island we were camped on. When I made noise hollering for my husband to come get himself a look it turned around and went back where it had come from. Fun to watch.

@@MamasBasecamp No... we had what I hope is our last Christmas in the old house. We won't be able to head up there again until the week of Jan 10. From what I've seen, the snow is gorgeous up there. We barely have anything here in Rochester. The reward of a happier kid is definitely worth it. And, yes, I do believe there were less loons around this year. I think the dry summers are not helping them. However you saw that bear, it was a good sighting. In all my trips, I think I've had a max of 5 sightings. Again, nothing I could record. Any wildlife up there is fun to watch. Hope Ams gets her moose one of these days.
