It seems unimaginable for us to live our lives without that hope of heaven, one office conversation I had with a colleague, and she said she wasn't afraid of death, she said it will just be oblivion. To be fair most non Christian people I talk to do bother about it, but seem to choose to put it to the back of their minds, or have the notion that if they have not killed anyone, they will be ok !

This was a special presentation today.. THe story of the seven brothers and their mother is also a favorite reading for me. Today would have been my mother's birthday. She died at age 94. I still think about her every day since she died in 2000. I feel sorry for the people who do have these books in their Bibles. Wisdom is so comforting especially about the Resurrection of the dead. I plan to use chapter 3 as a reading at my funeral.

After this reading of scripture today and your reflection, I understand the last part of the creed when we say: l believe in the holy catholic church and the RESURRECTION OF THE BODY... We are made for greatness. If we focus on God and be faithful to him as the mom and seven brothers did in the 2 Book of Maccabees, we will have eternal life and peace with our Creator. Our real home is with Him. Thanks father Mike for helping us understand the Word of God. ❤

If children were regarded as a blessing in our culture - there would be no debate about abortion - but children - having a baby - is often seen as an inconvenience - an obstacle in studentship/career/ being financially secure - and so on - all the new 'idols' of our culture. There is a problem of overpopulation viz a viz global resources? No. There is a problem of inequity in the distribution of global resources. One mans poverty is another mans riches. God help us with a more biblical view of life. Thanks and prayers Father Mike.

Two things... We have no possessions because by their very lable we don't possess them but they possess us. When we, as the family in Maccabees did, see all things as blessings that are given and taken by God, even these bodies and their lives, we live and die joyfully. Don't just count your blessings but know that you are blessed. For those who considerably despise you to no end (beyond your capacity to love them), better than calling down fire, bless them with a long life. So long be their life that they out live their family and friends that there be no one to remember them and worse no one to bury them or mark their grave. I can't of anything else more cruel.
@nickk48512 жыл бұрын
So, Wisdom 3:12-13, 16-19 is pretty striking. What do we make of that? I wish Fr. would deal with these tough passages when they arise, because that's what we need help with understanding.

To be honest I don’t believe that it would be one piece of pork or one violation because if you look at what societies and governments are doing now they will say it is only once and then you could live the rest of your life but what we see is that they push the limits we are going through similar things just not to the point of death for some at least not in this country please pray for the persecuted Christians

Well, this is a disturbing way to start the day. Of course I am disturbed by what happened to the mother and seven brothers. Where was their father, BTW? I’m also troubled by what I think is my understanding of the parts about “illegitimate“ children. I did not think of God as punishing the children for the sins or mistakes of the parents. It’s not the children‘s fault if they are born out of wedlock. The parents could be described as illegitimate but not the children. Also I’m confused by the second part of father‘s reflection because he said long life is a blessing or the short life is better. Children are a blessing but only if they are born within marriage? Some of us probably have out of wedlock children in our families. Obviously I have a lot of questions.
@hotconcrete2 жыл бұрын
Oh, how much those Protestants who pray from a Bible that does not include the two books of the Macabees are missing. 2 Macabees talks about life after death and the strong faith of the seven brothers and their mother who suffered for their faith and died instead of violating Jewish law. Martin Luther did not want the two books of the Macabees and a few more included in his Bible, which talk about the afterlife and about the cleansing after death, about Purgatory. What arrogance to remove books from the Old Testament just to not have those books included that argue against his erroneous teachings. God have mercy on his soul, the one who was the cause of so much turmoil and strife over the years since.
