When we started BIAY, we read the book of Job very early on and despite Fr Mike's explanations, Job's response to his suffering remained a foreign concept to me. As I got closer to the Word and God's forgiving, loving heart, I now understand how Job could answer the way He did, I understand why he never denied his God. Eleazar's martyrdom's story reminds me of how far I've come in ly understanding and my faith and how far I still have to go and learn in order strengthen my faith. I think a lifetime won't suffice but it's a very good start.

Anyone who struggles with their position on abortion or who struggles to express their pro life convictions to others, I offer 2 Maccabees 7:22 when the mother of the seven sons says”I do not know how you came into being in my womb. It was not I who gave you life and breath, nor I who set in order the elements within each of you.” All life is of God’s doing, regardless of the (inconvenient, ill-timed, even potentially man-made criminal) circumstances under which it happens. I am a mother who has had to ‘give back’ two of my three children. I thank God for the blessing of all of them!

Also interesting, in light of the 2024 Olympics is the "Feast of Dionysus" described in the same chapter, a desecration of the Jewish Temple. I wondered if the verse about the woman was relative to abortion, one of the other woke talking points. Very sad, although happy to have this enlightenment. There is evil about.

October 31, 2023 Will you please take a moment and pray with me? According to tradition, St. Gertrude the Great was told by Our Lord that each time she piously recited the following prayer, it would release 1,000 souls (or a vast number) from their suffering in purgatory: Eternal Father, I offer You the most precious blood of thy Divine Son, Jesus, in union with the Masses said throughout the world today, for all the Holy Souls in Purgatory, for sinners everywhere, for sinners in the universal Church, for those in my own home, and in my family. Amen. In her account of another vision, St. Faustina describes Purgatory as a "great crowd of suffering souls" undergoing purification. Further, she says that the souls are "praying fervently, but to no avail, for themselves; only we can come to their aid" (Diary, 20) Father I need your grace again because I am not the witness I want to be.

Two things brought to mind from today's readings were as follows.. "He who strives to save his life will lose it but he who lays down his life for My sake will gain it." Jesus "See now that I myself am he! There is no god besides me. I put to death and I bring to life, I have wounded and I will heal, and no one can deliver out of my hand." Deuteronomy 32:39 This is about as close as we get to Islam's belief of the one of the 99 names of God is the "God of death." Just to not bash Islam another name for God is the "God of Life." Allah mean God in Arabic.

Proverbs 24 The Thirty Wise Sayings -30- 21 - Have reverence for the Lord, my child, and honor the king. Have nothing to do with people who rebel against them ; 22 - such people could be ruined in a moment. Do you realize the disaster that God or the king can cause ? More Wise Sayings 23 - The wise have also said these things : It is wrong for judges to be prejudiced. 24 - If they pronounce a guilty person innocent, they will be cursed and hated by everyone. 25 - Judges who punish the guilty, however, will be prosperous and enjoy a good reputation. 26 - An honest answer is a sign of true friendship. Acts 10:9-11:18 God had rules for the Jews to set them apart from the nations and peoples that might corrupt their relationship with Him. This included food prodcriptions. But Jesus came to bring all of the different "flocks" into the Kingdom. However, some of the disciples - who were Jews themselves - struggled with the idea of now associating with Gentiles. So God had to make a point to Peter Peter was being taught that the Gentiles were now "clean" by using food as an example.

When Israel left Egypt, they brought along all their animals. Pigs also came along. The pigs helped too much in the camp cleanup that they recycled parasites in their meat, spreading sickness through out the camp. A rule was given without an explanation, but allowed by God.

I learnt back in July 2023 a little bit about this @candaceburnett. From Fr Mike and Jeff Cavins. My notes in the margins of the BIAY reading plan: There are 73 books in the Catholic Bible, 66 books in the Protestant bibles. In the year 350 the inspired books that make up the Bible were decided by the Council of Rome. Then Martin Luther later removed 7 books from the Protestant version of the Bible because he didn’t believe in purgatory or the need to pray for the dead (which the 7 books referred to). That is my simple recording of what was said so I’m open to correction. Hope that helps. 🙏

We have just put our clocks back an hour, darker evenings, and the decorating up of homes for Halloween, why is it people are drawn to the darkness, Satan lures children in with the promise of sweets, regarded as harmless fun by the world, but I don't think so. It is a bigger deal in the U.S I think (I was on holiday out there on 31/10 some years ago) in fact you invented it didn't you? thanks friends! 🎃 We however have our own 'dark time' Guy Fawkes the Catholic who tried to blow up parliament, when we were kids it was out custom to make a guy with newspaper stuffed in clothes, go out on the streets and beg for pennies, then light a bonfire and throw him on ! That doesn't happen any more, not the back garden ones anyway, this is done on Nov 5th. The fireworks still go on, my my history had a turbulent past.🎆
@roknroneАй бұрын
Wow, yes it seems like the celebration of darkness 10/31 here is very much enjoyed here..I work at the local Catholic school right here in the city that I live in, and we celebrate all Saints day in the school, a much different type of party, but the kids still get to dress up as their favorite Saint..that story of what used to go on there sounds horrible 😢..somehow people are still drawn to the darkness. Thank Goodness we have the Eternal light in Jesus. Take care and God bless you Elizabeth 🙏 ❤

Josephus Flavius (the official Roman Court historian) was so inspired by the story of the martyrdom of Eleazar that he wrote the same concept in the resurrection concept of the Jesus character. Josephus (Joseph of Arimathea) was a Jewish General fighting the Romans and then captured. He joined the Romans to defeat the Jewish rebels and destroy Jerusalem. Traitors are an effective tool to help defeat an enemy. Taking the stories from the Torah and rewriting them into a new book with a pro Roman, anti rebel storyline is the foundation of western civilization. “give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and give to God what belongs to God.”
