I have been watching you since Day 250. First off, great job being consistent for nearly 400 days in a row! Second, you are consistently your own worst enemy with poor time management. I used to be bad with time management...what helped me was playing "unrated" games where the consequences of my decisions weren't as heavy...for example: playing against the computer. Analysis by paralysis is a real thing. Your time is one of the things you have complete control over. Third, I recommend Castling much sooner. When you watch the "greats" they typically Castle early on, but of course it always depends on the situation. Keep up the great work-- you're well on your way!

Very entertaining game Patrick. Some missed opportunities but overall this came down to being a little too hungry. Favorite part of my day here we go. 1. I don't mind Nf3 at 1:35, but you're used to playing the Vienna and the Grand Prix. Even though it's a strange move order play to your strengths and push f4 first. You like to attack and be aggressive and this would lead to a more dynamic position which I think is your strong suit over a positional game. 2. I agree with you that Knight sac was too juicy to pass up and even though the engine doesn't like it, I would be very tempted to do the same thing. Just keep in mind later in the game that you are down a piece. Thats why trading your bishop for the Knight, even though you win a pawn, was not the most optimal strategy. Keep that piece all up in their business. Another to keep on mind is that losing your f-h pawns in positions like these is not always the worst because it makes your rooks that much better. 3. This also goes for trading the queen. However, this was a little more understandable to me because the other option was to bring it to the side of the board away from the action. you Fortunately, you were able to find some counter play and evened up material after eating so many pawns. 4. Relook at Rc1 at 13:30, you were one move away from calculating that is actually not that bad of a move and you wont get mated if you trade the d and c pawns. 5. Funny enough your knight sac and you're sub pat time management this game was not your downfall, it was your refusal to go for a draw. Specifically I am talking about the moment at 17:50 when you have the opportunity to trade rooks and win a pawn. You are down 8 and half minutes and decide that even with your time disadvantage, you would like to keep things are complicated as possible by not making that trade on h6 and check the king which is super dangerous, especially considering they have a knight which can just wreck you in time trouble. I know the engine says its ok, but its relying that you play perfectly and lets be honest, that will never happen. Play for your opponents is so much easier and they have so much more time to think. If you trade rooks and win the c pawn, it would be rook and knight vs rook and 2 pawns and only you can win this endgame, although in reality it's a draw. Even a rook and knight vs rook is a draw and you have two pawns! I was very impressed by the huevos you possessed in trying to win this with both rooks on the board, but considering the time and position you were in a draw would be a great outcome. Also they were a much higher rated opponent, you still would have gained 4 elo which is just as much you lost. To wrap things up I thought this was a great showing of your strengths and how you sometimes forget them. I know there is a five second increment but you rely on that too much as a crutch in time trouble when you should be trying to simplify positions. When that happens it often leads to trades that happen rapidly, letting you gain a little a cushion. Keep being aggressive, great resiliency and great video!

Hey Patrick, see the value of the pieces as their potential, not their actual strenght/value. The black bishop on e7 did not show its full potential, on the contrary. Your knight on d5 did. Exchanging these two pieces favorites black. Even more so since you spend three moves on your knight to do that exchange. So before you exchange, ask which piece is better or if you have a reason to exchange. If not, don't do it. It's sad you spotted Bh6 to late. Time for a flash card 😉 Asking, what could have helped you spotting this tactic, helps. Pieces on one diagonal or file, especially involving king and / or queen should attract your attention. So the king and queen on the g file and Qg7 / Rf8 deserve a closer look. Scanning the board for such let's say exposed constellations will help you spotting tactics more frequently

About the third time I’ve seen you do an ill advised minor piece sac on g4 with your only two developed pieces. You need to take a step back and just get everything you can developed/castled and THEN proceed.

You should start doing checks/captures/attacks/king safety checks. It really does help to say all possibilities out loud before even trying to calculate. A lot of the time you will find things that you would otherwise miss

Man the comments on this channel…Is everyone here rated way higher than 1500 to where they all would be winning these games? I feel like Patrick needs to make a rule that if you comment you need to also state your rapid elo. Keep fighting Patrick! I don’t know if it was the right strategy but I was rooting for you to push your H pawn sooner to create pressure since it was your one advantage for a chunk of the game there. - 950 rapid.

Hi Patrick you seem to know all the names of the openings, how long you been playing? I’m currently tickling around the 900 mark, so interested on how you got up to 1500+

At least you’re a good sport when you lose. I get so angry at myself. I’m doing a similar run on my channel trying to get to 1800. It’s so hard.

I'm lower rated than you (1400) so I don't want to sound like I'm "teaching" you, but I think another fundamental you broke was to avoid trading pieces when you were down material. You sacrificed your knight so then you should try to maintain your remaining pieces on the board as much as possible, e.g. moving your queen back on the diagonal instead of trading with their queen. Well played though!

Do you find these games at 1500 tougher or easier than the ones at 1200? I hear that you can run into a lot of good players at 1200 because that's where most people start when they open a new account, so you run into 1800 or 2000 rated players that have new accounts and are still climbing the ratings.

Most people get stuck at 1200-1300 range, but theres nothing between 1300 and 1600 really.

That sounds like hardcore cope from people hardstuck at 1200 to be honest. I can say that because I've been stuck at mid 1200s - low 1300s for a few months now. When you start a brand new account, your elo is extremely flexible; you gain or lose literally hundreds of points after every win or loss for the first 10 games or so. If there was a genuine 1800-2000 rated player opening an account at 1200, they would be at that rating range for exactly one game before exploding up the rankings. There's no deluge of strong players grinding through the 1200s.

It wasn’t a good knight sacrifice. You would have been better keeping it on the board, castling queenside and attacking their kingside pawns with your kingside pawns.

Also, when reviewing you tend to gloss over checkmarks as "good moves" when there are lessons to be learned there. You could get better instincts if you look at what the best lines are instead. Checkmarks arent bad enough to be inaccuracies, but there is always a better move, and often at least a couple. Some of the repeated bad habits you have early get repeated because when you review them you think "well that wasnt a blunder"

I think that's a great point, @nevyn1221, for all of us to keep in mind. It's so easy to gloss over the "Good" moves during game analysis. (Wow, Stockfish gave me a check mark -- I must be doing well!) But as the chess wisdom goes, "When you find a "Good" move, look for a better one"!
