5 for 5. Many recreational pilots here on the Canadian Prairies have a unique strategy for flying in January when the OAT is -25C/-13F: “Oh wow, the density altitude is 5,200 below seal level.” Then pour another cup of coffee, flop back down on the couch, and watch more MZeroA videos. Thanks for this guys!

5/5 cold temps definitely change the way the aircraft flies. Knowing the temps prior to departing at the surface & aloft is crucial for your aircraft’s take off/cruise performance! Getting that weather brief for any known PIREPS/Sigmets in your area or route will help you as well.

@mzeroa Just yesterday I canceled a flight around central Florida due to the high threat of severe carb ice given the temp, dew point and humidity. Yea, I can use carb heat every so often but why risk it, just fly another weekend

1 for 5. I'll be caught up in in 15 minutes. 🤭 I had my first experience with icing on the wind screen during a search for a missing plane in Rainy Pass Alaska. What an interesting new experience?! Fortunately, I was flying with a seasoned bush pilot, and he coached me through in. Sadly, the search didn't have a happy ending. 😔

5 of 5. What is the best practice to determine if air temps are better at higher or lower altitudes? Can you fly above clouds with some ice even if it is colder? Will it melt in the sunshine?? (Private pilot in training for Instrument Rating).

Five for five. My personal limits are -5C to 35C. At the cold end the plane climbs like a homesick angel but I have to think about survivability in an emergency. At the hot end, aircraft performance and engine cooling.

5/5. A good weather brief is essential, knowing the temperatures above and below. I never really considered going higher, in training we stayed at 2500-6500’msl. Made it to 9000’ when filed on the very rare day for actual imc.

Great insight. Questions for perhaps another video. How much does de-icing cost? Is it calculated per aircraft type? Do helicopters need de-icing? If so, how does that work? Do helicopters have in-flight de-icing capabilities like many fixed wing aircraft? What are the dos and don'ts for helicopters and snowy icy conditions?

5 for 5: icing is an aviators enemy indeed. I had just started my interest in flying when the terrible Air Florida accident happened killing almost all on board crashing into the Potomac River. Icing on the Pitot Tube as I recall giving false airspeed indications was the primary cause of the accident.

Being a Recreational Pilot in Western Australia icing isn't really a concern. Its the hot weather that can keeps on the ground with regular temperatures of 35 C.
