As I listen to today's reading, what came to my mind is how much we today are sacrificing our children like the Canaanites. Abortion came to my mind. As go deeper into Scripture I feel like we are behaving just like the people of the Old Testament. Thank You Fr Mike for giving me clarity.

Exactly! That’s why I shake my head whenever “progressives” call pro-lifers and pro-family individuals “backwards”. Because, in reality, they are the ones who are going back to primitive times-when everyone is slave to their sins and own desires.

Fr. Mike is right. We need to understand the context while reading these books as the punishment and the law were appropriate for the time. In fact, the law about refuge shows that we must not avenge and not punish those who committed crimes accidentally or unwillingly. Fr. Mike said that the people of God at that time had to follow God with the whole heart because they were entrusted with the responsibility of guiding the world and showing them the glory and mercy of God. These people's future generations wouldn't have been able to see King David and Jesus if they had not survived or had turned to religions where people sacrificed children. Thus, it was such a difficult task for God to keep them pure and strong until Christ arrived to redeem them of the original sin. Thank you so much, Fr. Mike, for your guidance! God bless you, Team Ascension, and the fellow listeners

May your word take deep root in our hearts and transform our ways of thinking, deciding, and acting. Send us your Holy Spirit to give us the Spirit of Knowledge, that we may know God and know ourselves. Give us the grace to approach the Word of God with meekness and humility, and with an eagerness to do everything God desires. Help us to be diligent students and faithful disciples of your word. I think the reason why we're not commanded to go to war anymore to destroy our enemies has to do with the forgiving and redemptive nature of the new covenant, and that as Catholics we can live with different cultures and religion and not be as easily swayed like the ancient Israelites. We are strong enough to live with them and evangelize.

Numbers 18 shows God instructing Aaron of the laws and responsibilities assigned to the Levites. The Levites are directly assigned duties related to the sanctuary and the priesthood by God. Heave offerings will be given to the Levites so that they can eat. Because the inheritance of the Levites is God Himself, the first fruits of these offerings will be given by God to the Levites. However, the firstborn of offerings are Holy to the Lord and must be dedicated to Him as such. Israelites will pay tithes (10% taxes) to the Levites to satisfy the needs of their work. The Levites are instructed to pay a tithe of the tithes to the priesthood. I appreciated your commentary on the idea of having God as an inheritance for the Levites. I was a bit confused by the meaning of this phrase as it has been repeated several times. It makes sense that this means the Levites do not own land but instead serve and worship God in the land of the Tabernacle. Deuteronomy 19 shows Moses instructing the Israelites to create cities of refuge where unknowing man-slayers may flee. In order to create a nation of justice rather than vengeance, God wants these cities of refuge to prevent avengers from excessively killing those who kill unintentionally. Intentional killers will not be granted refuge in these cities. God tells them not to pity intentional killers. Moses tells them to respect their neighbor's "landmark" or private property. Two or three witnesses are necessary to condemn a guilty person. False witnesses will stand before God and God's Judges who will determine if they are liars. False witnesses will be punished according to how they sought to punish the accused (an eye for an eye). Deuteronomy 20 shows Moses commanding the Israelites to trust God when they enter battle. Commanders must encourage the Israelites to remember God before battle. God instructs soldiers with unfinished business at home not to fight for Israel in warfare. An offer of peace must be given before each battle and battle only occurs when the offer is rejected. Only men shall be killed in battle, women and livestock shall be plundered. No mercy is given to the idol-worshippers among the Canaanites. Trees with fruit are to be protected whereas other trees may be used for the purposes of warfare. Psalm 99 reminds us that the Lord reigns. We know God is present in Zion and that He is Holy. We know the Lord is just and righteous. Thus, we call to exalt the Lord. God answered the calls of Moses, Aaron, Samuel, and other priests. Thus, we praise the Lord. Thanks be to God! Day 67 - 3/9/2022

Were the scouts just making it up that they had seen them in the land because of some folklore about these giants?
