It’s crazy knowing I currently work on some of the floors you did placements and continue to work at. I’m a 3rd year nursing student and you’re a huge inspiration! Been watching you since the very beginning. I have also worked with many of the staff shown in your videos; such as Dr. Michelle on B3! Always curious as to if I will ever see you in the halls someday. Keep up the great work!

That's how work life at an university hospital works, you're taught by somene senior to you and with each step you take up the ranks it continues to work like that. Med students are taught by junior residents who are taught by fellows who are taught by attending physicians. Or like in this case.

I guessed it correctly. Thought the patient was taking a dose that was too high but wow, daily dose of what's supposed to be a weekly dose. On the topic of medication instructions confusion, I've never forgotten an episode of ER where a patient didn't understand English so when they read "once a day" on the bottle, to them it was "11 a day" when read in Spanish.
@Jeff_Lichtman
@Jeff_Lichtman Жыл бұрын
For a risky drug like methotrexate, shouldn't the pharmacist talk to the patient to make sure they understand the dosage schedule and the risks? Or did that happen in this case, and the patient didn't understand? I was impressed by how Emily got to the bottom of the problem. It required some outside-the-box thinking.

@Violin MD OMG, about the Methotrexate. 😱As a pharmacist, I go over the directions a few times with the patient to make sure they understand how to take it, highlight the direction on the bottle, as well when to take their folic acid. I even write out the instructions on a piece of paper as I have this fear that the patient still will take it incorrectly. I can relate to what you said about having a student /intern following you around...so worth it in teaching but at the same time, you have to catch up on your own work. All your students will do brilliantly as I can see how encouraging you are.🤗

I am an ER attending, 3 years out of residency. When I was a 2nd and 3rd year resident we did 1-2 24h shifts per month were we had possession of an SUV with EMS/Resuscitation equipment and we would go out to any Code Blues or major traumas or other EMS calls that they requested. It made for a good experience, except I never slept during those shifts because I was always worried I would need to get up and leave and I am not in a good place when I wake up from sleeping! It made me very comfortable running codes and calling codes.

What a lucky medical student. And yes, students slow us down, but they make things more rewarding. And Emily the student seems to have the same, organized medical thought processes as her current teacher Siobhan. Either we create new doctors in our own image, or by emulating us, they become our clones. Students/residents/fellows become our "intellectual offspring" in a way. This is an absolutely wonderful episode. The next step for Violin MD is when she overhears her former students using her own phrases and concepts in teaching her grand-students.
