As a Software Engineering Manager and former Tech Lead, it's interesting to see a day in the life of a software engineer on call at a company like Amazon. Being on call can be a demanding and challenging aspect of the job, but it's also an important part of ensuring the reliability and availability of systems. It's clear from the video that the software engineer in the video takes a proactive approach to their on-call responsibilities, regularly checking in on systems and staying vigilant for potential issues. I also appreciate that the video highlights the importance of clear communication and collaboration with team members, as well as the use of tools and technologies to support incident management. Overall, it's a great representation of the dynamic and sometimes unpredictable nature of software engineering and the importance of being prepared for and responding to unexpected issues.

Oh on call something I do not miss (retired), after 35+ years in IT, started with assembler and punch cards. A company I started to work for put me on call after 6 weeks and no one thought it important to explain the production source libraries. I was working from day 1 on a new supply chain system. Midnight till about 6 am on a Saturday night had 2-3 high severity pages + 2 lower priority pages, I got through it sleepless. Tickets, yeah on my team there were those who felt it was below them to work on, besides my day job I had the highest ticket closure rate on the team. It’s all a challenge and it can be bit frustrating. Especially when someone else’s deployment goes south and no one is responding and you happen to look at a chat for help.

I can hear that outlook email chime from anywhere! Nice video! 5-10 high severity tickets every 2 weeks for on call isn’t bad. I know some service teams that get that many every week ! Lucky you didn’t get paged in the middle of the night. I’ve had that happen a few times.

I relate to your oncall experience! I'm on a pretty core feature of the FB app and kinda top of funnel so I end up spending a lot of time investigating everything only to realize that usually it's not even our fault anyways and then the hardest part becomes trying to find who to give it to before its too late lol. There's only three of us left and I'm still kind of a newgrad so its a strange feeling randomly having so much responsibility. But I guess somebody has to keep the lights on haha

are you able to change the sound of the pagingr? :D
@tyo0072 жыл бұрын
the main reason I didn't really want to come back to e-commerce is simply because of the on call and the pager. My god one day you go outside and could be lucky that there is nothing wrong with the system and next day it's like everyone is fighting against you. It is also worse when the company or the team became really comfortable with that and no improvement or automation planned to counter the increasingly number of issue

So oncall means you have to be available anytime to check on bug tickets? Love the video by the way.
@imjenncho2 жыл бұрын
Yes, you are the primary developer on the team to work on operational tickets for the service(s) your team supports. The operational tasks involve a lot of investigating issues such as alarm tickets, bugs, down stream service dependency issues, production issues, client issues/concerns, etc. On top of that, since you are the main poc, you'll get dragged into a lot of meetings or conversations related to your service. Also, thank you!! 😊
@larissahora2 жыл бұрын
@@imjenncho got it! thanks for explaining. do you change shifts with your teammates? because that seems exhausting
@rafatbiin2 жыл бұрын
Oncall is really an overwhelming period of time when you need to do tech support by answering questions of your service and help on investigations of issue’s coming from contributors and then there is production incident and you get called in the middle of the night. But yeah that’s software engineering. It’s nuanced, not all shiny how people usually think it is. Great video btw. Please keep on making such videos.
