Day of Days in Alabama from Hurricane Helene

"Growing up in lower Alabama, we have nothing but respect for hurricanes,” says local photographer Clark Kilgore. “We’ve had our fair share heading straight for us, and as surfers we’re hoping they don’t hit while praying they send rideable swell. This time, we were that lucky coastline that didn’t see any destruction. Our hearts go out to those that did.” He’s talking about September 26th, the day of days in Alabama, shortly before Hurricane Helene made landfall in Florida’s Big Bend and began its devastating rampage up the Southeast U.S. Here’s how you can help those impacted:

Such incredibly beautiful surf. So horrific it's arrival comes with the immense damage, and loss of life that we all heard about on the other side of it. Glad however the guys could get the chance to ride these waves, and some joy was had. Prayers to those losing their lives, their homes, and so much more. I did notice just how humbled everyone was regarding the storm. Compassion existed thoroughly. Good group of surfers paddling out, good people as well. Thanks for this coverage Surfline, well done. I get it, grew up not far from Galveston and chased storms from 1984 to 1992. Always a down side but caught epic swell from Galveston to South Padre. Pray for those who were hit hard for sure.

Crazy to see my professors house from college in pinellas as one of the houses destroyed. Praying for everybody in effected by the storm especially those in pinellas county which I was lucky to call home and hunt waves during my time at Eckerd

i was there that day. It was massive. by far the biggest waves ive ever seen in alabama. the shore break was gnarly as well, it was breaking in a foot of water.

We actually get more waves than you'd think. The summers are kinda dismal unless there's a hurricane but it gets super good in the winter. I moved over from the east coast and was pleasantly surprised.

winter storms produce a strong East then south winds that build swell. cold fronts move through and it goes offshore. other than that, lows and storms in the gulf

I am horrified at the nonchalance of these pleasure seeking Surfers and their seemingly Uncaring response to Helene. I was born and raised in Alabama, and I am a shamed. Do you not realize that you were spared horrific suffering and death that many other People in North Carolina, Ga. and others are dealing with, and you glibly rejoice at your good luck. No Thanks to God who spared Al. at the last minute! It was headed straight for you. I believe there were many Godly people that were praying for Gods mercy. It sure looks like he gave it!

@@zmagnifiedplaidz your right! I was there that day and I saw several large jellyfish. Also there was a crazy shore break breaking in two feet of water. The reason I wore a wetsuit that day was because whenever I surf in swim trunks the waves pull them down on the paddle out and the whole beach sees me naked. Last time I surfed without a wetsuit my swim trunks ripped and I had to walk back up the beach holding my board over my butt so no one saw me naked

@@johnbrink7430 perhaps when you checked it was in the 80s I went near the evening and it wasn't. Like I said though, it was warm enough that a wetsuit wasn't needed, but swim trunks don't handle the power of the waves. Very well

@@josephwiard6695 it wasn't 88 degrees, I was there that day. I wore a partial wet suit and it was perfect. You definitely could've went without a wetsuit that day but personally I prefer to have a wetsuit than swim trunks 👍

A lot of surfers from here which is where this was videoed are heading to Florida and North Carolina now to go help the victims what are you doing besides sitting behind your computer trying to down people for something at this point we didn't know that there was that much tragedy going on hadn't even made landfall yet
