Never been a big biker, but I love watching this show for the same reason I love all the DRIVE shows: They work on communicating more than the numbers that the cars and bikes put out; they help show the experience as a whole of driving/riding. Definitely my channel on KZbin right now

I test rode the Multi and it's a fantastic motorcycle. Truly a sportbike for real-life roads with imperfections and it's comfortable. I would prefer the Hypermotard for fun however. In the end a Stelvio NTX resides in my garage because it's got a 8.5 gallon fuel tank and maintenance is a breeze. I cover @ 20,000 miles a year so service costs are a huge part of the decision and Guzzi's are very easy to maintain. KTM's are great bikes as well. Honestly you can't go wrong with any of these.

I recently purchased a 2013 Ducati Pikes Peak....man it is an amazing machine....first Ducati after 30 years of Japanese sports bikes....this is a super fast, comfortable sports bike, the motor has the power where you need it for the road, and the handling is simply a step above anything I've ever had before and I'm talking R1's, R6, GSXR750, CBR1000 and BMW. Keep on rolling!!!!!!!!!!!!!! get some more vidoes up please!!!

I've only ridden the Multistrada and it's phenomenal! I've ridden one around London, around Monaco, over the Route des Grandes Alps and everywhere in between. Like a sportsbike when you want it, a supermoto when you need it and like a courier bike when you feel like it! Love the report too: Top Gear for bikes! Looks like you had lots of fun!!!! Who is the music though??????

Always lift a bike with your backside against the bike and your hands behind your back. That way you have a lot more lifting power and there is a lot less strain on your back. You have to lift it with your legs and not backbone. A 68 year old biker!

Danny, if you're serious about off-roading on your trips and a 650 thumper isn't enough, the KTM 990 Adventure is the best option, followed by the 800cc offerings of BMW and Triumph. Search for "Expedition: Sierra Nevada" next time you're on HFL. Get proper rubber for the kind of trips you'll do, I prefer the Dunlop Rally Raids. Also, start with day trips to OHV areas with buddies, no baggage, and build confidence. If you're out West, check Jimmy Lewis' school-- worth every penny.

Thanks for the feedback. I can feel you on the lightweight bike thing, I'm 2up often, so the thumper on the highway is a bummer. GS was good for this but I grew to hate that bike. I picked up a 1month on HFL, figured I'd poke around and read up. definitely $2 worth ;). Peace out, you guys are making nice videos.

Good episode. These are the kind of bikes I ride. As of now, for me, it's a Yamaha TDM 900. It's kind of like the Ducati; more suited to asphalt. And I love it. I thought of switching to a Ducati Multistrada 1100, but don't like it's look. And the 1200 might be on the heavier side, for me. There's always the Honda Transalp.

Ever pedal a GS off road? I'm assuming the stelvio is similar levels of terrorfying. KTM is quite good and fun, but yeah, tubes, super involved oil changes, lots of maintenance, boo hiss etc. Love the bike, I'm too lazy to be good to it. Since you seem to be hot on ADVs and their do-all nature, where would you drop your dollars?

Yeah, Grant and I rode an R1200GS and F800GS across Labrador a while back. They're big ol' beasts and neither would be my choice for actual dirt riding. The only real option there is the KTM. I'm probably going to build my own ADV bike this fall/winter based around something smaller and lighter though. KTM 525 or similar with a long-range tank, comfy seat and whatnot.

With the KTM990 in both this and the Tenere video, how would you say the yamaha stacks up in this company? I've ridden a KTM990, and it was GREAT. I just don't think I could put up with the maintenance. I had an R1200GS for 5 years, and ultimately it left me cold with all it's little spots of terribleness. I kind of have the hots for yamaha right now, and with low CG / centralized mass, does it avoid becoming a terrible bus off road like a GS or Stelvio? Close enough to the KTM to be fun?

These guys need to spend more time off-road, and learn how to pick up a bike! My Stelvio is better in dirt and gravel than my DR650...until it turns into gnarly single track. I don't have a problem picking up mine? Let's see which one is still going in 100,000 miles...and how many chains and sprockets the Duc and Katoom have eaten. The Stelvio is really in a different category (especially maintenance wise!).

***** I think what happens is they're more versed in the lighter bike world, so they're not used to picking up big adv bikes, only small little sporty things, then when something big like an adv bike or bagger tips they don't know proper technique.

MRmotrhead From what I understand the stelvio is beast in terms of reliability... So given that you're a stelvio owner, what do you think of the triumph explorer 1200 (non-XC)? I know it wasn't tested here but they're essentially the same bike role wise, same price. Thoughts?

One of the reasons I bought a Stelvio is the rugged reliability. I put almost 7k miles on it this year until a Cager destroyed it and even though she hit me at almost 50 mph the bike still stood up to the vehicle and I was able to walk away. Now I'm waiting for the Insurance to pay so I can go get another one!

multistrada 1200 S: 1200 cc, 1.2L basically, the number that goes with the name is typically a sign of how big the engine is. KTM 990: 990cc, or .99L as for horsepower, about 90-115 depending on the bike

I love my mts 1200. It really is faster than a superbike on public roads, and all day comfortable to boot. It also has an annoying tendency to break a lot which is bad considering you're not going to have much money left to pay to fix it because it costs as much as a decently equiped mid sized sedan.
