I feel the same way. I haven't seen the source video for this highlight, but it feels like the cuts were to edit out some of Sean's off topic comments? Thing is, I love that stuff. I'd rather have the full, longer conversation with digressions, and pauses, and tangents, than what feels like a condensed version. I love Sean's ramblings.

I don't agree at all. Based on my experience in the context of my PhD, my general studies and my professional career, it's much, MUCH better to give focused, specific feedback than beat around the bush with vague suggestions or redundant bla-bla. Whether you agree with that feedback, whether you find it constructive or not and what your choose to do with it is entirely a different story. But you definitely need to have it as clear-cut as possible.

Sean - just want to let you know that you would make an outstanding strategy/ management consultant. I'm a former consultant with a Tier 1 firm, and you have every piece of capacity needed to excel in strategic analysis and hypothesis-based problem solving. If you ever get tired of streaming, you should consider a late entry as senior hire to McKinsey, Bain or BCG. It's less of an enjoyable life, but imagine the impact you would have in a couple of years...

"Highlight] Advice on How to Give & Receive Good..." WTF HAVE YOU DONE NOW, SEAN!? "... Feedback" Oh :p
@Granas19887 жыл бұрын
In AIESEC Germany we learned to give feedback this way: PoWWWEr 1.) Positive = Say something you liked about what happened. In everything there is something good. Made people accept your feedback more and help you to not only trash talk the other person 2.) Wahrnehmung (perception) = Say what YOU SAW. Not why or what you think about it but the WHAT HAPPENED. Example: In your book the person run out the store and just fall for her. 3.) Wirkung (effect) = How does your perception effected you? How does it make you feel/think. Example: That made my feel confused. 4.) Wunsch (Wish) = What do you wish the other person would change? Example: I would really appreciate if you could explain more why he fall in love with her. 5.) Erfolg (Achievement) = Say what this would achieve. Example. With this explanation I would understand the motivation of your character much better.

When getting this kind of unhelpful feedback, you can fall back on the five Y's. It's not five different why questions, it's just Why five times. "I don't like the combat" "Why?" "I keep running into situation X" "Why?" And so on. Eventually you'll drill down to the root cause. And don't let them skitter away with a non-answer either! "Because that's what it feels like!" is not going to help improve anything.

So... If I want to give bad feedback, instead of suggesting some insightful ideas or possibilities, I should instead take a steaming dump on the creator's work. Gotcha.

It's nice to avoid directives and generally appearing like you're commanding others when giving feedback but sometimes they're necessary. Case example is this video. Sean is directing us to do things the way he commands us to. This isn't a bad thing it's just that there are no easier ways to convey the information without getting overly wordy and rambling. While giving feedback without directives is certainly nicer it can sometimes simply wash over the people you're trying to communicate with. Especially if you're overly careful about what it is you're trying to say. I think just as useful is being able to receive directive feedback and similarly commanding advice and understanding why the person giving that feedback is being as commanding as they sound. Maybe there really is a set in stone method that you're too stupid to understand, maybe you do need to change things drastically. Playing hugboxing doesn't help when you're figuring out what you need to improve. Sometimes directives are helpful even if they may not be nice to hear.
@chaz7207 жыл бұрын
It's, as most things are, a balance. You have to know your audience, even if its an audience of just the one person to whom you're providing feedback. Sometimes you can be too obtuse, and the reaction of the person is to feel as though they are trapped in a, "bring me a rock... no not that rock" infinite loop of critique. And, as you emphasize, sometimes you can be too prescriptive, and the person will become detached as they lose their ownership / creative control. Overall though, good stuff, good video.

This makes a lot of sense when it comes to writing a book or making a game. But I'm currently getting back into Dota while playing with a stack of new players, and it's hard to give feedback in Dota. A game where I feel like you want that direct feedback. But since very minor changes to the scenario can drastically change what they should or should not do it's hard to give that, and I'm not really sure how to go about it to be honest.

Brandon Sanderson and other great great authors say that people will almost always try to unintentionally destroy your book, simply because they often give suggestions to problems that they find instead of actually describing what they are experiencing when they read, which is why they have specific beta reader groups which have taught how to give feedback for their books.

My takeaway from this is that YOU (the person receiving feedback about the thing that was done or needing to be done) is the subject matter expert and one of the best qualified people to make and improve this thing. Would be nice if that was the case and that creators were somehow more credentialed and educated in the thing they are doing than the editor or feedback-giver, but regardless, to give good feedback is to pretend that they are lol

I think Sean's point was to not give a possible solution, because for most things, you don't understand their motivations or intentions nearly as much as they do. Give your feeling, let them figure out the solution. There's will be better for them anyway.

What about positive feedback though? Or a feedback's positivity or negativity is dependent on the author's goals ?
@loveghostnightmare10827 жыл бұрын
i feel like "positive" and "negative" feedback might be a false dichotomy in this case, or at least a distraction from the core point. the poor is simply that a description of the issue is more useful than a directive that neither gives reason as to why that directive should be enacted nor gives agency to the one being critiqued to regulate how to address the issue with their own knowledge of the product, service, etc that they are providing. it could maybe be said that "hey, this is good, keep doing this" might be a "positive" directive here - something that, if followed, could lead to future products being inundated with a given problem (a little randomness is fun, too much makes the game a quantum mistake) or difficult to adapt to changing circumstances, maybe

Jon Kru You're misunderstanding. The video is *advice* about how to give feedback, so it's okay to give directives.
@Graemyr7 жыл бұрын
He does offer an explanation of why you shouldn't give directives. When you give directives, you are taking away the creative license of the person that you're giving feedback to. You're prescribing a solution (to a problem that may not even exist) instead of pointing out problems (which the receiver of the feedback may or may not agree exist) and then allowing the receiver to work through the issues with their own ingenuity. Also, I wouldn't consider this video purely instructional. It's advice, which you can take or leave. I get the impression that you're having a personal reaction to Day9's presentation rather than the actual content.

too much PC i cant handle it i disagree completely with u mister day9 an intelligent person should listen to any type of feedback and sort out the good ones and understand them (ask if he doesnt) directives can be be really good, they can be the correct one especially if the person giving them is an expert on the subject
@taylorsabbag69627 жыл бұрын
What on Earth are you talking about? Not a directive by the way. But seriously, I really like you and usually you have some moderately smart things to say, but this is not very useful to anyone. If anything it's hurtful for people to learn the wrong way to give and receive feedback. First of all, it's a maxim, and as a rule, maxims are often not valid, nor is reality usually consistent with maxims, especially as they're usually defined by one individual speaking in one language. Why would reality conform to an arbitrary viewpoint, never mind one which attempts to describe all examples in a given category? Second, there absolutely are situations in which you can give directives as feedback. Every element of feedback is useful and necessary. You can choose which elements you'd like to take away. For example, within their own meetings, you could describe any one individual's suggestion as feedback. If none of them suggested a directive, there would obviously be no direction. Not everything you say here is useless. The core of your argument, in fact, that describing your reaction is the most useful is valuable and probably true. Though it's more apt to say that whenever you can get at the core of a problem, your feedback will always be the most valuable. However, sometimes a directive can actually be getting at the core of a problem, and if you get defensive or have your mindset, you might miss it because you're too confident that you know more. And honestly, sometimes you will know more, but the person through a random insight will still be able to get at the core issue.
@Tory-JJ7 жыл бұрын
dont really agree. If a massive majority of your testers in a game are agreeing on changes for a character/balance/whatever then its probably a good idea to do that. HOW you do it is what matters to the designer. But doing it is what matters to the players. For example. I've played gigantic for years, alpha. since 2015 janurary. Game went into OBT 12/8/2016 In that time we have made massive overalls to the game design wise and map and playstyle wise. Power generation changes that were massive to meta/gameplay Power "stealing" was removed. "paws" were a thing for awhile... There's too much to type about.. But all these changes were basically what you called a check list. Its not like we were doing this to them on purpose its their game. Making it playable and fair to new players is what matters the most. Having solid tutorials to understand the game and not summon when you cant defend creature is important.
@klte17 жыл бұрын
I'd say suggestions aren't as irrelevant as he's presenting it to be, it's just that the impression and effect are that much more valuable to the ones receiving feedback. If you have a proper understanding of the effect the author/writer/designer is trying to achieve, then there is nothing wrong with minor suggestion. I'm understanding your point, and I agree mostly, if a large group of people (correctly) identify a problem with specifically balance of a certain game mechanic, then a game designer should definitely listen to that. However, that's not the point David is trying to make. If the suggestion is formulated in such a way that it shoehorns you into one specific direction which won't solve the problem, then you have no reason to follow that course of action.
@Tory-JJ7 жыл бұрын
Yeah but I don't see that kind of feedback in the games I've played over the years. Not to mention, I certainly do not provide feedback that is not important. Generally if you are invited to an alpha. You are expected to provide feedback as often as possible. However I have seen a lot of Uneducated feedback. That is the problem with most kids/players now a days. Uneducated feedback asking for changes on something they hardly understand is definately the most toxic to a designer and detrimental to a games depth in the long run. That being said there is always something most designers struggle with that are newer in the industry. And that is Depth not being complexity. And complexity not being depth. A game does not have to be complex to be a deep and enriching experience. K.I.S.S. aka.... "Keep it simple stupid" If there is a way to simplify something thats over complex for no reason than it should be done. There are lots of examples in game design of games that are shallow but complex. Its why its hard for me to play a lot of games that aren't competitive. Because competitive games tend to just have more depth than those that are single player. Not always. But more often than not... There are plenty examples for me personally of great single player games and franchises.. Metroid...zelda....Mario...doom...
