prince was highly underrated and misunderstood. people saw him as just prince the pop star and sex symbol but nobody really saw the absolute brilliance of the artist. his song writing is on another planet and also a very underrated guitarist.

Her version is the best, hands down. Her emotion during the song is what sets it apart from the others who sing it. If you watch closely towards the end, you'll see a tear roll down her cheek and gives the audience a feeling of what she wants you to feel.

To me, this is the signature version of this song. Sinead did another remarkable performance when she performed the song "Mother" with Pink Floyd in Berlin. Prince wrote this song about a lost love, but Sínéad sang this about Mother hunger. Sinéad's mother was emotionally disturbed and abused Sínéad but Sínéad always longed for her mother's approval and acceptance. Sadly it never came but Sínéad was an amazing mother to her own 4 children.

I believe she and her mother had had a pretty tumultuous relationship, and we're just starting to get back together, when her mother was killed in a car accident. It's when she starts to sing about the flowers that her mother planted that you can see her truly tear up. Prince wrote this song, but it belongs to Sinead ❤️

Of course we've watched the video, it was all over the place when it came out. It's captivating. It's a heartfelt performance. Above all, it's Forlorn. It puts a whole right in the middle of your soul. I've never heard the original recording, I've heard Prince do it, but Sinead's cover, I simply can't imagine it anything being better than this.

Hi, her Dad left when she was young, Mum had mental health issues, she went to an Irish workhouse at 14 years old, not pleasant places.The tears are her wanting a loving and missing a normal Mum as a child. Hence the catholic imagery when she is not on screen in the video. "all the flowers died and withered away when you left Mother" is when she starts crying...

Prince wrote this song in 1984. Sinead O’Connor did this cover version in 1990. It went to no.1 in the UK charts and no.1 in 17 other countries. She tweaked the script slightly to make it a female version. The part she had tears in (All the flowers that you planted, Mama, in the backyard….) was when she was thinking about her mum in that moment, who died in a car crash in 1985. Three weeks before that accident, Sinead wanted to forgive her Mum for all the abuse she gave her. She had a very difficult life with her mum, and wanted to forgive her, but it was too late. All the other lyrics in this song (written by Prince) wasn’t about her life. She chose this song because she loved it herself.
