I'm in my 60's now. Back in my youth I lived like there was no tomorrow, rode with 1%'rs, raced cars, and hurt people I loved, (emotionally). You can never get it back, just treat everyone in your life well and have no regrets

Yes, and I liked the version 30+ years later for The Mick better because he was older. He and Mickey had a pact that they would sing at each other's funeral. We don't know how well Mickey could sing but we know that Roy was good enough at baseball to have a chance to walk on at spring training. He got east of the Mississippi and looked at his finances and decided he had enough money to get to Nashville but not Florida. I actually prefer the Willie Nelson cover because he was older when he did it.

That's interesting to know. Coincidentally, I live just down the road from where Mickey was from and born. Amazing to think a legend such as he came from such a tiny town by me, tucked back into the woods. Not much there besides a post office and a couple of residents. The main road that goes through there is named after him.

I was 7 when I saw him at Worlds of Fun in Kansas City. My mom wanted to see him, I didn't. So glad my parents dragged me to see him. He played the banjo so hard and fast, he broke strings on the banjo. Memories I'll never forget.

For an amusement park Worlds Of Fun did their due diligence in getting quality acts to stop by. I saw Jim Stafford play there in about 1976?, he was amazing. Wish I'd seen Roy Clark as well.

Roy was one of the greatest guitarist that ever lived. There are lots of videos of him playing. But to hear him sing I would strongly suggest "I never picked Cotton" and "Thank God and Grayhound"

Wow, Angela, it just goes to show how the past years can get jumbled around. I thought Roy did this in the mid-1960's. Interesting how, in the era when FM radio and "the serious consideration of rock music" -- the music of the baby boom generation - could still be eclipsed by a featured performer from a funny country-western variety TV show. By the time of Roy's passing in late 2018 he'd become regarded as one of the best all-around guitarists in America, as well as being a genuinely nice gentleman. He didn't need hit records to draw crowds wherever he appeared. Thanks, Angela, for reviewing this one.

This is a great classic. I remember watching Roy sing this on "HEE HAW" as a young kid. Not every vocalist can be Pavarotti or Dion, or Houston-esque. They say a story and get their point across with great sensitivity and power in their own unique way.

Hi watched him perform this song for the first time as well was when I was a child and my parents and our whole family watched he haw every Saturday night. I think it came on at 7 o’clock, but we all loved the show. It was kind of corny but funny lighthearted entertainment.

But a less known fact is that the song itself was a remake of a 1964 song titled _Hier Encore,_ by French singer Charles Aznavour. Also, much more recently, the melody sounds very similar to Adele's _Million Years Ago._

I heard this song when I was 'young' and In college In the 60's. Another song from that time is September of My Years by Frank Sinatra. I thought both songs were nice and the words were meaningful. However, they are more so now. And yes Angela, we all have regrets some more than others. You just don't want to dwell to long on those regrets.

I'm from Roy's Home Town of Meherrin, Virginia. Roy would regularly return home, and was a super humble guy. His nephew married a woman from my church, and Roy would frequently attend Christmas plays at our church. He was a class act, and a great musician. Great review.

Yesterday I turned 16. I got my driver's license, drove around town, so happy to have my freedom. With my car, I can go anywhere, do anything, glad to be alive. Today, I am 66, going on 67. I will be lucky to have another 20 years of life to live. I still drive my car, and enjoy life, but it really does go by so fast. I'm still glad to be alive, but now I realize it won't last forever. It is depressing, but that is life. Enjoy it while you can.

I have maybe 2 years left, and my life will be over, I've had a good life, a very loving husband that has been with me for all of my life, we met when we were 10 and got engaged secretly when we were 12, we were married at 18 back in 1977 raised 4 kids, we have 10 grandkids, 5 great grandkids, of course everyone has a few regrets, but I don't dwell on them, when my time does come, my cousin is going to sing this for me at my gravesite. My husband tries to make each day full of happy memories and our kids are hoping for a miracle, I have stage 2 lung cancer. Our kids are grown with families of their own, my biggest regret is having to leave my husband behind, I know our kids will take care of him especially our middle daughter, her husband already told my husband when mom's gone, you're coming to live with us, no if, ands or buts, about it, and that makes me feel better.

The interesting thing about this is it's a song about _not_ appreciating our younger years as _precious_ and ones to treat as exquisite jewels - not stopping to smell the roses and always looking to the next conquest. And most young people don't know the ailments and frailties of being old, so they can't possibly truly appreciate being young.

Music is very powerful, can convey any mood, or situation if well written both as lyrics, and melody and done in the right style. Roy Clark was one of the world's top notch guitarists, but it was not shown here.

I first heard this song probably in 1969 when I was 9 years old. I couldn't emotionally relate to it because I was too young to appreciate the lyrics. Now that's different because of age and I realize now that Roy Clark first sang this song when he had a lot more living to do. I believe he died a few years ago. This is a memorable song, and I haven't heard it in its entirety in perhaps 50-years.

I don't remember exactly which ones but I think it was the star spangled banner, yankee doodle, and one other patriotic song, and it was flawless! The man was a step above a master guitarist.

Originally sung by Charles Aznavour, This version by Roy Clark is probably the most widely known, but I personally like Glen Campbell's and also Willie Nelson's. This is one of those songs where the lyrics and the music go together so well that I can deeply feel and relate to the sentiments expressed.

A saying that has always been true. Youth is wasted on the young. A lot of this song is based on the selfishness of being young and callous with other people's emotions.

It's interesting. A young person tends to be put off by this song because it just seems like a depressing song and the subject matter pretty much inconceivable, which is precisely what the song is about. I don't mean that as a criticism, it's just the nature of people. There are so many 'sayings' and songs and stories that don't click when you are young, but you realize are incredibly accurate when you're older. You just have to live through it before you realize how much you think is meaningful at 25 seems kinda dumb and meaningless later on. You'll also find that of all those numerous 'friends' you have, you'd be lucky if 2 or 3 are actual friends in the end. There is no fix for this as you have to live your as it comes and results will vary wildly.

Anywho, as a kid I used to listen to this masterful musician on the HeeHaw show in the 1980s and he was sooo good!! I wasn't the greatest country music fan, but my dad introduced me to that. Great times, great music and great people. I will cherish such for the rest of my life.

A great reflection song of youth is "IT WAS A VERY GOOD YEAR." Frank Sinatra and The Kingston Trio (1961 album release) both give great renditions of this song. Frank's version is more haunting due to his rich voice. Give this masterpiece a listen.
