Fun fact... Micky Mantle felt that this song told the story of his life. He made Roy Clark promise to sing it at his funeral. When Mantle died in 1995, Clark fulfilled that promise (you can see it on KZbin, they broadcast it on ESPN and played images from Mantles career/life while Clark sang).

Now at 60, I can 100% relate. I ran fast and with not the best people, a patched member of a east coast MC. I so wish I took things slower. Go from one lover to another without getting to know the women I was with, if only I just talked to them to get to know them 😢

@Play It Again, Sue! well Sue, thank you. But I feel the way I led my life fast came back on me. After some years of living I finally found a woman a fantastic woman I moved across the country to be with her, but just under 2 years she passed unexpectedly. After some time another woman was worried about me and asked me over, after getting to know her she told me she would love a relationship with me that from day one she was attracted to me. So we fell in love and were to be married 7-4-23 on her birthday. But on 3-26-23 I woke to find her passed away next to me. It's like Karma is on me. 60 and alone in a place I know no on.

My family sat around the tv and watched Hee Haw with Roy Clark and Buck Owens. Roy could play almost every instrument! 👵🏼💜☮️ It was corny comedy but they always had excellent talent ♑️

Hi Sharon, so nice to hear from you. Cool so Roy was extremely talented then. I had no idea he played so many instruments. I knew he played guitar and banjo but that was it. You know, some of those older shows that we considered kinda corny were the best shows and had good entertainment value. 🤩💜✌

No it was a song that he loved.😢 Roy Clark could play and sing just about anything from country,country western Spanish blues ext. Roy could play anything with strings he was also called the man with lighting fingers.😮

Yep... The song was written in the early 60's and Roy Clark recorded it in 1969. Roy was amazingly talented, and usually performed on any stringed instrument with a certain amount of comedic delivery which always endeared the audience to him. He was brought on the Hee-Haw show to bolster viewers as the show was faltering before they added him.

Yep, I'm another one who grew up watching Hee Haw, and I well remember Roy Clark ( and Buck Owens ) from those great days .. Dad was a big country music fan and he loved it .. I remember him laughing at all the comedy skits, as well as enjoying the top class music, so they were happy memories .. This is a great version of the Charles Aznavour original, which I also remember well.

@Play It Again, Sue! Hey Sue, from what I recall, Dad loved Johnny Cash, Charlie Pride, Hank Williams ( Senior ), and Buck Owens, as well as a few others .. I think Johnny was probably his very favourite, but I can't be sure .. He definitely played his albums a lot, especially the live albums he did at Folsom Prison and San Quentin Prison .. Such a great song but as you say, so very sad. Thank you for your reaction. I think it wasn’t that he had a great life but that he thought the life he had was great at the time. However, now, as an older man, he looks back and recognizes how superficial all his relationships were (“I never stopped to think what life was all about;” the friends who drifted away; the flames that quickly died) and how selfish he was (“every conversation that I can now recall concerned itself with me and nothing else at all”). He recognizes that that wasn’t such a great way to live after all because it’s left him alone “on stage to end the play.” He never quite says that he’d do it differently if he could go back, but that’s the implication. You might check out “Right or Left at Oak Street,” another Roy Clark song. Also, I f you haven’t reacted to “I am a Rock” by Simon and Garfunkel, it’s another great song that approached a similar theme in a different way.

He is NOT the original singer of this song. The original song was composed by Georges Garvarentz and lyrics were by Charles Aznavour...who also was the original singer. The French title is Hier Encore (Just Yesterday or Not So Long Ago). Roy recorded an English translation written by Herbert Kretzmer. It was about a man who spent his life pursuing things focused on himself, pleasing ONLY himself. In doing so, He missed out on so much and has many regrets. This was one of Roy's biggest hits and was in the top ten on Billboard (US) for Easy Listening and Hot Country categories.
