This is a video I have wanted to do for a while now that shows when things go well you get near perfect days for steam tours but when things go wrong they do just that !Took the title from a Matt Monroe song that came on as I got back in the car one day after things had gone wrong big time so it made me laugh out loud !

That scene with the locomotive and train in driving snow is fantastic. According to authorities the video was discovered in a camera next to railway during the spring thaw. Initial reports indicated that the videographer had not been found and it was believed that he likely succumbed to exposure and famished animals coming out of winter drug the body off. However, later he was found to be in a psychiatric ward of a hospital having lost his nose, several fingers and toes from frostbite, and repeating over and over again, "Where is that damn train?"

I know alot of people would like to hate on these machines because of all that black smoke, but most don't realize that most of the solid particulates in that smoke will settle back down to the ground and the carbon will become one with the earth again.

Well, unless you live in the vicinity of a rail road with 100+ trains a day, and the soot and dust settles on your house, and becomes one with your garden, your laundry, and your lung. Or worse in an industrial center with a lot smoke stacks in addition to multiple rail lines.

It isn't much about the actual particles. Black smoke on a Steam Engine means that the crew is burning the fuel inefficiently.
@MFKR696

@@scythesasin4181 I dunno if you're aware, but *all* coal-fired steam engines belch out black smoke. It's the nature of the beast. Don't wax all intellectual on us when it's clear that you don't know what you're talking about. With internal combustion engines, black smoke means you're not burning all your fuel, but with coal, black smoke just tells you that it is lit.

@@kaihorstmann2783 There's a rail line right behind my back-yard, and I live about a click away from a huge GM plant (Oshawa, Ontario). The only thing that really bugs me about it is the noise and the fact that the prick-bastards only seem to come around at 03:00 in the morning.

What's wrong with that? 7'17 - 7'37 is a perfect example of the use of the 'Harrington hump'! All joking aside, that has to be the best collection of steam railway photography I've seen. I grew up with scenes like that day in, day out. I didn't like the cold days then either, despite the so-called 'resilience of youth'. Ah, the 'Italian Job'. Like steam locomotives, they don't make 'em like that nowadays - at least not quickly! I wish you more successful and not so successful photography outings.

Hello Mr. Thompson, a question please: are those steam trains in regular service with you up there or are these just special historical theme tours on sundays only for example?
@Pesmog
@Pesmog 5 жыл бұрын
They are all steam specials. However, in the UK they are so popular that there are sometimes up to four steam specials running somewhere on the mainline each day in the summer.

So this would be a good shot vs. bad shot edit ? They all rate 1st class+++ with me, another train adds extra 'dynamics' (for want of better words) to the scene ! And the shot starting at 07:40 is simply incredible, guess I'm not the only one thinking of the famous painting now. Thank You !

Thanks Leo , you’re bang on with your assumption 👍The shot at 7-40 was only possible to do by placing the camera against the high stone wall hence no snow on the lens thankfully. Steve
