Sealed will sound way better though. Slower roll off and more accuracy musically...Sealed for the win. I own a SVS SB1000 sealed and musically and in home theater it's an ass kicker for such a small sub...( It will hit 19hz in my theater room with bass tester software). You don't hear 19 Hz but it will crush your chest and pressurize my room. My theater room is fully treated though. Bass traps ceiling to floor, 8 pound pad under comercial carpeting, acoustic ceiling, heavy drapes, and well placed defusers on the walls. Running an Onkyo 7.1 with all Axiom Audio speakers and the SVS SB1000. Great video!!! I also build subs too. Had 2 Power Bass 10 inch subs in a sealed box running a MB Quarts formula 2000 watt amp with a 2 farad Stinger capacitor... SPL at 127. I had to sound dead'n my whole Mazda 6...LOL

Sealed is best for accurate sound reproduction hands down. There's a reason Magico is making only sealed enclosure speakers and they ask for the M9 1 mill. That guy from Magico is nuts over sound quality, so I take his word for good. In the M9 he put 2x15" speakers sealed, Unlike Kharma and Borresen who uses ports. Ports are only to compensate for the lack of low end authority or lack of power amp.

@@DNDCarandHomeTheateraudio yes, but how much?! You need at least 300 W amp for a sub and i hardly need more than half in my room on a sealed one. I would get the Reference Dayton instead of Ultimax, a 500W plate amp would suffice even for a 12".

You would be best off running a signal generator. Play 20hz, then 25hz, then 30, 35 etc etc... See what the difference is, and what you prefer and need. If you have good midbass already, aim for the highest output at the lowest frequencies. If there is no massive difference, go sealed, transient response is simply unbeatable.

Agreed but the majority of amps can't go that low. They can but it's much more expensive. I try to gear most of this channel to be affordable to the average buyer.

I honestly don’t see much difference, but I’d choose the port because I believe it’d keep the sub cooler.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. Please give a thumbs up and share because it helps alot. The difference is in the performance. The sealed is a tighter more responsive unit. The downfall is it requires more power to get as loud as the ported when your comparing the same subs in similar environments.

main difference is the ported is way louder on a small range of frequencies (say 35-45Hz) but all other frequencies sound comparable.

Ultimax loves sealed. Give it a bit of boost at the bottom end and it will play infrasonic no issues, even in relatively small enclosures. I run my UM10 in 25l sealed, powered by SAM-500D, EQ'd by receiver and what that thing delivers, especially in THX modes, is incredible. Soft and lovely, but brutal at the same time. And it fits under the couch.

Yes agreed. If you watch my video on subwoofer compression you'll see the ultimax 12 hit 10 hz. I've also done videos hitting 5 hz as well but that's not a recommended use for the sub.

How far away from the subs did you measure? 1 meter or more?

Could have done higher numbers but the volume was only @ 55 out of 90 although 65 and up is usually when it get a bit of distortion

I think it depends on what kind of music you listen to. Rap, hip-hop, and music with heavy bass lines benefit from a ported box. Rock, metal, and similar genres of music sound better with a sealed box. That's just been my experience.

Question: 12" sub in a sealed box vs 8" sub in a ported box? Which wille get lower and be louder at low frequencies. Im leaning more towards ported boxes but am limited with space in my trunk. Music type: some Rap, Techno, Dubstep.

I don't have definitive proof of one or the other but if it were me I would do a ported 10 or 8 sundown since your limited on space. I would do a x8v.4 or v.3 ported if it were going in my car. Sealed is always better for sound ported is just to show off spl at a certain tuned frequency and competitions The air compression in a sealed is the best for response which gives better SQ better bass etc etc over all ranges And because of that yes you need more power but the box is smaller cheaper and less complicated

I didnt measure peak frequency because the point of this video was to measure spl. Both were set at a low pass of 75. I can do a video on that today. We can see how it measures on a graph.

2 decibels, scarcely noticeable to the common ear. Consistency of frequency response on the sealed? Definitely noticeable. Loud as hell is cool, but hollow sounding at certain freq’s gets on my nerves. I designed a slot that was made to make up for this, but it couldn’t out hit the comparable sealed on TLab and I plugged the data into 2 diff sims first, accounted for atmosphere, went nuts with mics, etc. Where I wound up was that a sealed inverted install, for the heat dissipation, simply can’t be beaten for a daily driver that listens to actual music.
