This video honestly made me cry. I was raised to think that being gay was wrong. My whole life that was what I was told with the only proof to back it up being that “the Bible says so”. When I was 13 I realized that I was in fact gay. I was terrified. I didn’t want to mother to hate me and I didn’t want my father to disown me. Neither of those things happened when I came out. They love me the same as they always have and my mom has done a complete 180 when it comes to the gay thing. The thing Daz was saying about waiting until you're a teenager before basically force-feeding kids opinions on gay people basically happened to me. My parent's aren't homophobic, they just never saw reason to mention it often because I was a kid, and I would soak up other people's opinions instead of forming my own. I knew what being gay was, because my mum paused a movie in which one of the characters said "I think I'm gay" and was like do you know what that is? and then proceeded to explain it to me very casually, and 10 year old me was just like okay cool. Then, in high school, I think in year 7 or 8, one of my friends came out as transgender to me, and asked me to call them by a gender neutral name they'd chosen, and they'd already faced a lot of hate from other kids. I think they were expecting me to ask questions, but I was just like sure alright, and called them by the name they'd chosen since. They definitely seemed relieved by my response. I just didn't see the difference in being LGBTQI+ and being straight, so I didn't put all my effort in building barriers that shouldn't be there, because I'd grown up believing that people are still people, and even when I learned about the LGBTQI+ community, that belief was already fully formed and couldn't change, and I just got on with my day.
