I feel like this film could've worked perfectly if its message was "It's okay to not be happy sometimes". A lot of people give Branch crap for “singing killed my grandma”. The thing is, he’s traumatized. His singing got him exposed to a Bergen, and his grandma made a self-sacrifice to save Branch at the cost of her own life. Now, whenever Branch hears singing, he’s reminded of his grandma’s death, and he doesn’t want to feel that pain. Why they didn’t do more with this, I don’t know. But I love how just when everyone thinks the situation is hopeless, Branch is the first to step up. The main thing I wish they’d done is give a lot more importance and relevance to said trauma, which would make the already-good moment of Branch singing again even better. That’s just my take, feel free to agree or disagree.

Alternate plotline: Poppy and the other trolls embody toxic positivity, and the Bergens are a depressed race who are misunderstood as villains for not being happy all the time. Poppy’s father dies, and as she assumes the role of queen, everyone around her tries to brainwash her into believing that happiness is the only acceptable way to be and anyone who isn’t happy should be forced into happiness, like branch. Poppy and branch go on the quest to save their friends because of the evil chef, and along the way poppy learns that it’s ok to be serious and sad, and branch learns that it’s ok to lighten up and be happy. In the end the other trolls are trying to be happy and positive and loud when it clearly isn’t warranted and is antagonizing the Bergen’s even more, so poppy stands up and says that the Bergen’s were right and they were wrong, and it’s ok to be sad sometimes and happy other times. The two races help each other, no “introvert bad” or “depressed? Try not being depressed!” Message.

Say it with me folks: Being introverted is not a flaw that needs to be “fixed”. Some people would rather be by themselves and it’s rude to assume they’re just depressed and need to be changed.
@wyntertheicewyvern62263 жыл бұрын
Even if they are depressed, it's not something that can just 'be changed'. Forcing someone who is upset or depressed to be social can make them feel worse. And especially so if it's something you want, and not what they want. When trying to comfort a depressed person, different things work in different scenarios. But never force them into it.

I’m an introvert, I also have autism and bad anxiety, I’m not that type of person who always wants to be around people, Me even being in room with only 10 people will start to give me an anxiety attack, and I’ll just start crying, it’s horrible, And when people force me into something I don’t like, or try to force me to be really happy, I just feel angry and even worse than before, all people should know that just because you may be the type of person who like being around people, and is always loud and happy, doesn’t mean that everyone else has to be like that, and being an introvert is not a bad thing,

If they had actually killed poppy’s dad they could have shown poppy grow to be a leader and struggle with not quite feeling ready for it yet. Poppy could have taken charge and signed a peace treaty with the villains. Maybe they could have had a good message if any of the characters had grown at all throughout the story.
@Zebo123456783 жыл бұрын
That would have also given Poppy a medium with which to relate to Branch. They could have bonded over their losses, and Poppy's continued optimism despite the emotional pain she would be feeling could serve as a much more tasteful way of trying to help Branch through his own loss.

When I first watched this movie, I hated it. I absolutely hated it--the character design, the color palette, even some songs (except Sound of Silence, that cover was actually pretty good but I hated how it's "mocked" with it being a sad song and putting some "happy" twist to it, but the harmonies were awesome). I also got extremely annoyed with Poppy throughout the film. I tried to be patient, but it tested me a lot. I guess you can say we all relate to Branch. But revisiting it now, I think I either didn't watch the full thing in full comprehension because of how much it tested my patience (they could have deleted that annoying high five scene with the cloud but they didn't), because the message is actually there, just not well-anunciated. I think the message was that the toxic positivity of Poppy and the trolls literally led to their downfall. They lived in the privilege of being in a very safe environment and never had to face hardships and negative emotions. Branch, the only "woke" person in the community is ignored even though his reasoning is on point. That would have been an amazing reference to the cave allegory, but the way it's written is very biased to the cave side of the story. It's only during the climax where they all get depressed that the outcast gets heard, and that would have been cool if it were written a different way.. I believe what the writers wanted to say to kids was "The world isn't all sunshine and rainbows, and it's necessary to be cautious to be safe and even use that negativity as important lessons; but when it gets to that darkest point, you still need to have hope." That's a great lesson to learn, but it wasn't written in the best way given how ambiguous the motivations of Branch are through Poppy's eyes. I think the biggest writing mistake here was that the main character was Poppy and that we see through her POV instead of Branch's to get a clearer message. We just seen Branch suddenly change his mind in the climax and without necessary exposition or show to process his trauma and emotions, we're left with another "aw, cheer up, it's gonna be okay, I was wrong for being sad, sorry". TLDR revising Trolls now, it has a fine message. Just a terrible delivery and kid-pandering, but given Dreamwork's Shrek did better than Prince of Egypt, I'd see why they'd invest on this instead of actually amazing films.

As much as it’s fine to be introverted I don’t think it’s good to be alone (I don’t mean liking to be by yourself but more so isolating yourself from everyone else and building no relationships) that’s literally a lonely life. i think it would be interesting if poppy was the one with the "singing killed my father" trauma (i know its 'grandma' but i switched for a family member that we see in the movie, which is poppy's father). it would be so nice to see how the queen of a society always was taught about being happy when she carry something like this with her. idk, its just something that i thought it would be nice to see, mainly in a kids movie, showing that everyone loses someone, but the love is not gone, it stays with us here. and because of this, we have to give the best of ourselves and sometimes, let the pain into our hearts and let ourselves cry, feel deeply the sadness that is losing someone you love. i think it would be powerful. its even reminding me of disney/pixar movies.

You know, a really interesting message this movie could have aimed for was bodily autonomy--basically teaching kids that it's okay to not do some things when their uncomfortable. If the Cloud Guy kept pushing for physical contact, like a hug, and Poppy stood up for Branch because he didn't want to hug a stranger. Then the Chef is a more forceful or aggressive character that tries to hurt the trolls, before they fight her off in self-defense. And Bridget and the King could show clear consent of receiving affection, like asking for a kiss or to hold hands. It's incredibly important to teach children that they don't have to do everything adults tell them to if it could hurt them or make them feel weird, and I would love to watch a movie about that with my niece

The one thing I question every time, is that the Burgens are already happy and excited on Trollstace... and they apparently have no happiness without eating trolls? What? How are they Happy if they haven't eaten a troll yet? Do the royals just keep the gig going for no reason? Or is it just the chef pulling the strings behind the scenes? Guys, am I the only one that noticed in trolls world tour, it said that all of the trolls lived together from all types of music but then split up because of the pop trolls. In the movie, a map is shown of the troll kingdom. But in the original trolls movie (Trolls 1) said that they lived in the troll tree and then escaped from the bergens to live somewhere else which is where the pop trolls live in Trolls 2 (world tour) but only the pop trolls were there... So in the new film (trolls world tour) the producers literally rewrote history. (This probably doesn’t make much sense)
@poraetochips3943 жыл бұрын
Ig the only way I can see it making sense is before they were being hunted all the trolls went separate ways, meaning only pop trolls were hunted. Idk I still think it woulda been better if they kinda cleared it up.

A detail that's bothered me ever since I saw the movie is that it's established they left that tree thing where they would get eaten when the main character was a *baby*. Yet later on in the movie during the ridiculously overdramatic flashback, the depressed guy says his grandma was killed in that tree and we see him,,,, as an adult?? That's a weird age gap for a kid's movie to include, it feels more like the writers just,, didn't think it through and didn't think kids would think too hard about it..

I'm see a lot of people making fun of Branch for not singing because singing killed his grandma, but I can see where he's coming from. Think about it. You're a little kid living in a area with people that eat you. You were singing a song that makes you happy and as we know, bergins eating trolls make them happy. You were singing and catch a bergin's attention. They think. "Oh, this troll sounds really happy, so if I eat this one, I'll be just as, if not, happier." The bergin goes to reach for you, only to have your grandmother, who you probably really close with and possibly living with because your parents got eaten too, save your life by trading you for herself to get eaten. That's is traumatic for a little kid to see your grandmother get killed in front of you just because you were singing.

My grandma was obsessed with the story of the movie for the longest time because she genuinely believes my various issues are all due to me being sad and just needing to be around more people. She watched this movie with my youngest brother a lot when I had to visit for family gatherings or to deliver orders of cookies she paid for and always took the opportunity to mention how great the message was :D Pushing a traumatized introvert with social issues into a group of people isn't good. In fact it is quite bad in my opinion.

@@bombdotcom2168 What’s your suggestion? Staying like that forever? It’s true that there’s no easy solution, that said, pushing yourself *IS* necessary regardless of how comfortable it will make you feel or not. Sure, going all out at once is the wrong way to do it. But doing nothing? That’s pretty much just setting yourself up for failure.

@@bombdotcom2168 So your suggestion basically boils down to paying money and then never ever pushing yourself so you never learn how to get minimally tough and deal with new situations yourself. But that’s not a bad thing because you have a paid therapist to tell you how you should deal with each trauma every time something bad happens. This way, you never have to worry about stressful situations. Plus, if things get too bad, you can always resort to drugs. Yeah, sounds promising to me. People unironically thinking like that is pretty much what created the generation with the objectively highest rate of suicide in the last few centuries.
