Is The Incredibles The Perfect Film?

The Incredibles is my personal favorite film of all time. But that's just my subjective opinion. Pixar is well known for being the masterclass of animated movies. But while everyone adores and praises the likes of Toy Story, or Coco. How well does The Incredibles stand up as the perfect film...?

...The Incredibles means a lot to me. It's iconic to my childhood, and I restarted my channel a couple years ago. Hopefully I did it justice today.

@@phoebeclark4718 For me, I reach a highest tier plateau with things like this - I can't pick a favorite Disney film or character, I have many. Syndrome is fantastic, Dr. Facilier from Princess and the Frog is so delightfully creepy, Bowler hat guy from Meet the Robinsons is hilarious. Silver from treasure planet is so interesting because he's the villain and the mentor... These are all 2000s movies. 😄 You can tell when I grew up. From the little mermaid onward, I really can't think of a Disney villain for the next two decades I didn't like.

I think my favorite thing about this movie is how mature it is. There are so many scenes with characters talking that blew over my head as a kid like I didn’t know how the hell insurance worked but now that I’m an adult I can look back at those scenes and laugh. I wish they were more kids movies like that but there simply aren’t which makes this movie stand out even more.

something small i appreciate about violet and her crush is how hes not the typical jerk jock and how she just needed to be more confident and herself and that got her a date with him..she was the weird one who needed to change how she presented herself not him..thats rare to see...usually he needs to change and she would get over him by the end of the film cause cliche movie trope 101 is girl gets over hot boy for the boy that saw her for who she was all along..and I hate that trope....she was the one hiding herself...he was willing to open up...she is not one of these weird girls who likes someone but does nothing about it....she actually went for it and it worked out...who knew...yes she put in more of a effort to look more presentable to prove she is willing to which makes someone more desirable..its just facts..it shows initiative and is a good trait to look for in a partner...sometimes being yourself means be proactive...not stay the same to get what you want..you can look different but still be you...

The track "Kronos" is what was playing during that scene. And it does a lot to sell that feeling of discomfort. But what really did it was just the masterclass level of cinematography and pacing added to the track. The track starts really subtle and small and builds to this grandeur that's nearly overwhelming. Much like the realization that occurs in the scene is also nearly overwhelming from a narrative perspective at just how dark at what's actually going on is. It's by far my most respected scene in the film.

So! You mentioned how Violet's powers reflected how she's an insecure teen, and that's exactly what the intention was! My family bought the version with a bonus features disc when the movie came out, and one of the behind the scenes features had I think the director saying that they picked the families powers using their familial roles Bob- Father, strong and protective- super strength Helen- Mother, needs to adapt to her families needs- super flexibility/ elasticity Violet- Teenage daughter, shy and insecure- invisibility and forcefields Dash- Child son, hyper and excited- super speed Jack-jack- literal infant, full of possibilities- like 20+ powers So you hit the nail on the head there!

@OfficialDeanAdler
@OfficialDeanAdler 3 жыл бұрын
Why not blame the movie for how bad it is? In my opinion, it has no reason being as bad as it is. Yes, it’s unrealistic to say they had 14 years to come up with a good story because they didn’t plan to make a sequel for 14 years, but it’s just strongly disappointing that we got the same movie with different elements. Also, it had so many elements that were shown that just were dusted under the carpet. We could have had a movie on if the super’s identity were actually a huge obstacle, not a little inconvenience. We could have had a movie about the new generation of supers, not just a lifeless pawn solely to exist for the villain. We could have had a huge cult following through hypnotism which caused a HUGE problem for the supers, not just a weak plan that helps the supers. The sequel had so much potential, and didn’t at all tap into it enough. But again that’s just my opinion.

I know this is a scalding hot take, but the track Kronos Unveiled is so fucking amazing. It starts off quiet, barely even there, as Mr. Incredible sneaks his way into the computer room. As he's learning more and more about what Syndrome has done, all because of the way he treated him as a kid, it slowly crescendos. Then as he sees the plans and countdown for the v.10 model, the brass comes in, making it feel that much more intense. It hanging on a single note as Mrs. Parr reveals his location, unknowingly getting him captured, then ramping up again in a slightly different key as the turrets blast him from every direction, it really accentuates the tone of the scene so well, I'm not sure a better piece could have been written.

I really like you're description of elastigirl - I think in the current world view, she's a refreshing character. The original intro to the movie had Helen talking to a woman who put down her being a mother. But Helen wasn't having that. The intro they went with was better, but I love the idea of family expressed in this film. I love how many new films today are celebrating that a family is something you create, simply the ones you love. But I also think that the "nuclear family" is an honorable thing to strive for. To me, there's no greater calling in life, nothing that will have more importance, than the roles of mother and father.

I know I've already commented but the actual animation for this, while not as detailed as what we have today, is so incredibly full of life. Syndrome mocking them at 9:36 is so bouncy and energetic without looking... catoon-y, like I remember a lot of the shows from my childhood being. They do and show all of this fantastic stuff, but even with the kind of abstracted proportions and CGI, it still feels so human.

Sadly, the early 2000's may have been a great time for cinema, but now, it's sad because we are living in the age of the Death of Cinema, where all original stories, or less popular properties are being given up to Netflix and Disney+, and the only thing that can stand in Cinema is the industry giants that have been around from this time. No original stories for Cinema, coming soon.

The incredibles is my absolute favorite movie of all time. I saw it in the theater on my birthday when i was 12, and ever since nothing has been able to top it, and im confident that nothing else will. Every aspect of it is handcrafted perfection and I love it to death. As i've gotten older and continuously rewatched it, I've realized more and more the subtle genious of individual moments. There are multipile times in the movie where a simultanious "peak" is used to propel this film to make an incredible emotional impact that most other movies can only dream of acomplishing. There are two examples in particular that use this tactic and easily become the most intense scenes in the movie for me. The first moment is when Helen finds Bob's location with the tracker as he uses Syndrome's computer to learn of his evil plot. Helen up until this point has been suffering because of her fear that Bob is having an affair. There are multiple points where the film shows us how much she is struggling, and the change in her demeaner when she says goodbye to Bob when he's going to go to the island a second time reveals alot about her character. She has been holding onto the last threads of hope that she is wrong and he's not cheating, but when E hands her the tracker, she is forced to confront one of her greatest fears. At the same time, the movie is also flipping back and forth betwean her and Bob, who is realizing that the other superheros have all been murdered. These people were friends and allies. We see many of them in the crowd at his wedding. Their lose would be devastating, and this is reflected on his expression as he stares at the screen in disbelief. In addition, the deaths of his fellow supers also have a pretty strong symbolic meaning. The past that Bob craves has quite literally been destroyed. Even if he was able to take back his place in society as a superhero, it will never be the same because the people that he shared that with are gone. Throughout this scene the music swells to parallel both adults as they come to a simultaneous emotional peak that then practically explodes. For Helen it's when the tracker reveals with irrefutable proof that Bob has at the very least been lying to her, and for him it's being caught by the security system, a construct that has obviously been designed to counter someone with his abilities. The truth is I can't do this scene justice by trying to explain it, and I urge you to rewatch it again to see for yourself how both of these characters experiences work in tandom to create an unbelievable climax of tension. The second is the plane scene, which is probably not all that surprising. Holly Hunter's incredible voicework alone brings this scene to absurdely powerful heights, and it helps that it's just flat out one of the coolest sequences I've ever seen in all of television. But... that's honestly not what really pushes this scene over the edge and gives it unbelievable emotional strength. This scene again flip flops betwean Helen and Bob, giving us a window from which we see them both go through intense deep real fear of losing what they love most at the same time. Helen, as a mother, is of course worried about nothing more then her children's safety. The emotion and tone of her voice convey that she is taking this 100% seriously, and that she is aware that this could very well be the end for at least some of them. The way she screams at violet in desperation to put up a barrier and that she aggressively announces there are children aboard the plane as a last ditch effort to appeal to their aggressors is beyond intense. And, as the missiles close in, the look in her eyes as she tries to desperately come up with a plan to save them is heartbreaking. Ultimately, she has no other choice then to potentially sacrifice her own life to protect Dash and Violet. Sure, the movie showed us before at E's that her suit was virtually indestructable as it literally takes the full brunt of several missles, but on the plane this doesn't matter at all. If Helen had alot of faith in these ideas she wouldn't be panicking. She's a professional. She has no doubt contorted her body to save hundreds of people, and this moment would theoretically be no different than any of those. But this is different. It's a new suit she hasn't tested, and these are more advanced missiles she can't shake despite her abilities as a pilot that possess an unknown amount of destructive power. She leaps to her kids and covers them, accepting that it could very well kill her, and all she can do is hope that somehow it's enough to at least protect them. At the same time we see Bob, albeit not nearly as much compared to Helen, but just like this is debatably the ultimate climax for Helen's personal story as she prepares to possibly make the ultimate sacrifice, this is also the climax of Bob's personal story. In this moment, when he realizes that his wife and children are probably about to die, everything else he has been struggling with falls away. He is immediately aware of what actually matters to him, and then is forced to lose it forever mere seconds after this revelation. So he hang's there, sobbing, plunged into a fate possibly worse then death itself as the realization that his selfish actions that spawned from wants that didn't really matter just caused the death of his loved ones, leaving him truly empty and alone. True rock bottom. The abyss. An endless well of sadness and pain that he imagines will haunt him until the day he dies. Basically, both of these scenes blow my fucking mind.

Thank you so much for mentioning the score. Everyone talks about the beautiful animation, the family dynamics, the superhero themes, Edna Mode etc. But honestly I think my favourite aspect is the music. It's blend of spy thriller to bombastic superhero is brilliantly represented in the music. There's big brassy tunes for action, laid back chill jazz (life's incredible again and off to work) and omnimous music that brings the tension to a boiling point in the Kronos unveiled scene. I could go on for hours on how perfect the music is and it's integration on the film. Bonus points as it ties to how memorable the film is too, you can sing a few notes of a tune from the film and people know the scene it's in.

I don’t know if anybody else said this, but I also caught the “Riding-her” thing, as well. I’m betting that they originally pronounced it that way, but somebody noticed how it sounded in the dinner scene when Helen asked what Violet was hungry for, and Dash answered. So, they were like “Naaah.. Let’s change it to ‘Ridin-JER’.”

Listening to the soundtrack to relive the movie in the head is something most soundtracks aren't suited for these days, when the classic orchestra is put aside and atmosphere and ambience are more important than motifs and themes. Jonh Powell in the How to Train Your Dragon trilogy also develops this kind of soundtrack masterfully.

Love the Incredibles! The world and characters they create are unique and iconic. I always think that they did the “superheroes are outlawed” plot point in a superb manner, way better than the Avengers. I watched this movie relentlessly as a kid, so much that I know the entire script word for word. My family even dressed up as the incredibles for Halloween one year. I have so much love for this movie and I’m so happy it’s getting the recognition it deserves.

This movie feels so personal to me as I’m sure it does for many other adults who were kids when the film came out. The “types” of each character were exactly mirrored in my family. My dad joked and craved being younger in a typical office job, my mom was a stay at home parent who was constantly adapting to the needs of the family and my dad’s travels, my older sister was moody and defensive, I (the middle) was hyperactive and mischievous with a bond to my dad, and my sister (a baby at the time) was joyful and full of possibility. This was not just a story of family, but a story of MY family (or so it felt). It was a go-to watch in our home and watching it as an adult makes me feel even closer to my family. It also helps that it is a great movie on its own.

This video made me question the current story I'm writing and made me contemplate whether it's really all that unique. After thinking it over, I feel like how emotional I get and how personal it all is, and how it chooses to reflect more civilian struggles of the world is what'll set it apart. This movie was released only 6 years after toy story, which was the very first full length cgi animated movie ever. They even created a brand new program to animate Violet’s hair. Long hair was virtually impossible to animate until this film. There are movies that come out today that look worse than this 18 year old masterpiece. And as far as animation quality for Pixar goes, toy story and bugs life have the understandably worst animation in my opinion, but they are also the two oldest Pixar films.

The Incredibles has always been my favourite film. I can quote it word for word. With that said this was a bad video in my opinion. Most of it seemed like just fluff work that didn't say anything substantive. The main exception to that I would say is the cinematography part of the video. I was hoping they would do a timeskip for the incredibles two and have jack jack, violet and dash be main characters when supers had been allowed again and with them trying to juggle that, and maybe even dive into an identity crisis thing with jack jack, since Brad Bird has said the reason jack jack has so many powers is because he hasn’t settled his identity. But in the BTS of incredibles ones storyboards there are scenes with violet as a baby and she only had invisibility and force fields, so there’s definitely something about jack jack. Maybe even letting jack jack become a bit of a villain or lead astray and have the rest of the family confronted and dealing with that. I like that they empowered Helen in the sequel but I felt she already was empowered from the whole house wife stereotype in the first film
