BIRD FACTS Though notably Brennan Lee Mulligan has a favorite bird family and that is Corvidae (crows, ravens, magpies and jays belonging to this family). But he seems to generally love facts, period, so it’s not strictly inaccurate to say “Brennan loves bird facts” but he has gone on record to say it annoys him.

That foil question about bird names was tailor made for me, I have a Wingspan themed deck with a stipulation that I need to use every bird card with a real bird's name in it so I've been scouring Scryfall for years looking at all of these cards.

Question 3 has an additional answer. With cards like Animate Dead, it's not necessarily changed to be more legible to players, although that's a benefit. Often those types of changes are made because they use outdated terminology or the formatting of the card is outdated.
@CrossXhunteR11 күн бұрын
I thought the answer to question 3 was going to be that Mill and Surveil are keyword actions, not keywords, but "when certain abilities are keyworded" kinda has some wiggle room in there to what it is actually saying.

the fact that the errata'd text of animate dead is LONGER than the original text is the more clear violation

3:39 interestingly enough, the text on loxodon warhammer actually *did* get changed from "when this creature deals damage, gain that much life" into lifelink, despite the fact that they *are* mechanically different!
@underFlorence11 күн бұрын
Well, the thing is that at the time it was introduced, lifelink WAS mechanically the same as "when this creature deals damage, you gain that much life"! You can see that in the reminder text for early lifelink cards like Daybreak Coronet or Mistmeadow Skulk! It wasn't until later (M10 I think?) that lifelink was changed to be simultaneous. So changing "when this creature deals damage, you gain that much life" was not a mechanical change, but changing lifelink behind-the-scenes WAS a mechanical change for all lifelink cards!

Um, Magically, the last time a card with real-world flavor text released in a main set was the Dracula showcase of Edgar, Charmed Groom (Dracula the Voyager) with the text: "It is in the hold, perhaps in one of those boxes. I’ll unscrew them one by one and see. You work the helm.”
@JonaxII10 күн бұрын
Lifelink, when it was introduced in the time spiral block, initially actually worked like that, so all cards with the text got oracle updates to lifelink. These updates were later removed when in Magic 2010 the combat damage step got reworked and Lifelink got changed from a trigger to how it works now. This got us into the awkward situation where any of those cards reprinted in the meantime had actually been printed with lifelink, which with the lifelink update turned into functional errata. Luckily, "all those cards" only hit Loxodon Warhammer.

For question 4 I'm pretty sure the Eldrazi were released by Chandra casting Ugin's ghostfire and not Nissa.
@MegaMechafox11 күн бұрын
I thought it as well and looked it up, Chandra's ghostfire apparently weakened the seal. Sorin came to Zendikar and enlisted Nissa when Nahiri and Ugin didn't show up. Nissa opted to smash the hedron thinking the Eldrazi would retreat. Sorin basically went, 'you idiot' and noped out, which is why he didn't come to help Nahiri later.
@Cosmicevergreen11 күн бұрын
Chandra unlocks the eye of Ugin and the spawn break out but Nissa destroys the main hedron releasing the titans proper.
@twarnold1410 күн бұрын
@@MegaMechafox The weakening of the seal and then Nissa actually releasing them was my memory of it too. It’s worth nothing that Sorin did not help Nahiri with the eldrazi for different reasons. When some leaked out many centuries before, Nahiri stopped them alone. Ugin was dead/in a cocoon, and Sorin had tuckered himself out after creating Avacyn and the Helvault (which together also put up a barrier around Innistrad such that her call for help was dampened or blocked). Nahiri came to yell at Sorin about that, so he imprisoned her in the Helvault (like a jerk). When she was freed finally, Nahiri saw that eldrazi were fully unleashed by Nissa. Instead of helping the Gatewatch save her plane, Nahiri went to Innistrad and created cryptoliths to draw Emrakul there so Sorin would lose his home too (like a jerk). So the 1st time he could have helped, it was before Nissa fully unleashed them and he was recovering. And the second time Nahiri didn’t bother helping either.
@JivanPal10 күн бұрын
My recollection was it was due to Chandra's ghostfire during a battle between her and Jace.
@JackTheRipper4ever8 күн бұрын
@twarnold14 Slight correction, Nahiri came to yell at him, and when he snapped back, she attacked him and tried to threaten him and potentially his home to make him come with her. THEN he imprisoned her. Further note, the eldrazi were not an immediate concern at the time of the fight. However, once they were immediately came to fix things, which Nissa ruined (like a jerk), THEN he sought out Ugin (living time-line) who refused to let him help without Nahiri (Like a jerk).

Um, actually question 3 was wrong. When lifelink was first keyworded, it was still a triggered ability. All cards with the "spirit link ability" were given lifelink. Then they changed lifelink to happen simultaneous with damage and every card that was shortened to lifelink was then unshortened back to its original form. The only exception was Loxodon Warhammer, which was reprinted in 10th edition in the middle. The policy is to not un-errata cards that were printed with updated text.

Um actually, the eldrazi did escape once before Nissa released them. Nahiri was tasked with watching over them, and the three planeswalkers made a pact that if they ever broke free, Nahiri could call the other two and they would come to help. They broke out and she called for help, but neither showed. She put them back herself and went to confront Sorin, and he stuck her in the Helvault. I think.

So funstory bit on the release of the Eldrazi. Nissa did not release them. That honor does goes to a Jace helped Chandra both of whom were were battling a not quite all there Sarkhan in the Eye of Ugin. This info comes from the webcomic that Magic had in 2008-2012. Nissa did unintentionally worsen the situation by attacking Sorin who was trying to rebind Eldrazi.

The Nahiri thing does seem a little pedantic, however it is notably different. Geomancers can control "earth", as opposed lithomancers can control specifically stones/rocks.
@twarnold1410 күн бұрын
I also remember when her name was finally revealed. There was a time where it was Sorin, the spirit dragon Ugin, and an unnamed lithomancer. (This was also before Ugin had a card. Can’t believe it’s been 10 years since the rest of that trio was realized.) That’s why her first card has that moniker so players could make that connection of who this is. So I feel like it’s the right level of pedantic.
