This is the general idea of how to go about blockstrings in DBFZ. The focus of the video is stealing an extra turn, but I tried to make it as simple as possible. Hopefully it helps!

DBFZ is the first fighting game I recently got into after Smash and I'm having a blast learning combos and applying them in matches, however, I still am feeling lacking when it comes to fundamentals and neutral so I'm grateful for you putting out vids that break down the game's basics for plebs such as me.

That's because you started off learning combos instead of the things that are going to get you combos. Learn neutral, then focus on combos and shit.

I originally practiced against AI due to no ps+. I think the arcade mode AI are actually really good at grinding movement/tech skill because they level 3 EVERY time you make the slightest mistake. Arcade AI is the reason I learned to safejump... but I never learned staggers because I'd get level 3'd. I play online now, but I didn't know how to use stagger/ki blast mix-ups until now. Thank you, dekillsage!

This was really helpful! But I kinda expected you to talk about Tag Guard Cancel, which as far as I know is why you guys do stagger strings now instead of long LMH Special Assist strings like last year.
@xLightcrystalx
@xLightcrystalx 5 жыл бұрын
Why do they do that? Can you explain ?
@Snowyy201
@Snowyy201 5 жыл бұрын
I can't really that's why I was hoping he would talk about it... My understanding is that if you know how to GC correctly then any classic long blockstring can be disarmed at will. You're kinda not getting much from doing blockstring anymore, so stagger can "bait" them into GC or mess up their GC inputs and then you get the opening. The only reason why you would wanna do long blockstring is staling for your assist to come back or after you just snap them I suppose? But I just don't see top players doing "LMH > specials > assists > mix > repeat" much anymore.
@mrevilducky
@mrevilducky 5 жыл бұрын
It's because if you guard cancel during the special part of LMH 》 Special, you get out for free (1 bar) everytime. There's no way to punish if you get guard cancelled during a special move. Staggering makes the guard cancel timing much more precise for your opponent; allowing you to bait unsafe challenges or block the GC outright, and punish with unscaled 2m damage.
@dekillsage
@dekillsage 5 жыл бұрын
I tried to keep it simple! There are a lot of options when you introduce 6m, guard cancel and assists so I wanted to cover those later!
@Snowyy201
@Snowyy201 5 жыл бұрын
I'm looking forward to it, there are a lot of nuances at high level plays that can't be picked up just from spectating, so it's great to hear why you do what you do and why it works.

Thanks sage. I found that after focusing on my blockstrings, I started failing in my combo game because of it. This is great information, but for someone whose trying to make a character like Janemba work, how would you pressure with a character that’s almost entirely fuzzies? Or create a blockstring rather.
@fortidogi8620
@fortidogi8620 4 жыл бұрын
try to piece it together in a way that gives you combo routes at as many, if not all, points in the blockstring if/when they suddenly get hit. if theyre hit right away with the light, do i have time to figure that out and confirm? if they get hit by the 2m low, how much time do i have to hit my next button before they hit the ground and tech? if you can find a perfect route, or even just a few points where you have a mixup thats easy to confirm from, then youre suddenly scarier to block.

Could you cover how to cross up during a blockstring? I can never seem to get it right but I know this is a maneuver pro players pull sometimes. I knows it's risky of getting 2H'd tho too. But anyways, can you explain what's the easiest way to do it? (Preferably with SSJ Goku as an example)
@powerk21
@powerk21 5 жыл бұрын
Just time SSJ Goku's assist to hit the opponent about the same time you finish your last hit of your string, then use the time the opponent is on blockstun from Goku's assist to IAD (Instant Air Dash) over the other side and press M before you touch the ground (but not too soon or you'll miss).

Hey sage, I recently picked this game up about 2 months ago and have sunk 100ish hours into it so far. I'm demon rank but in a lot of my ranked matches I'll panic and mash 5l when doing block strings and get punished. Is there any way I can improve or does it come with experience?

Try rewatching your matches and looking at the scenarios that get you punished or make you uncomfortable and think of ways to overcome them! Use training mode to practice!!

One thing I don't really understand about unsafe normals, even if they are more than -5, can't you just cancel them into a special move anyway?
@dekillsage
@dekillsage 4 жыл бұрын
You can, but then you forfeit your turn completely. By stopping at the normal you can either restart your string or play the am I gonna backdash mind games because you still have other buttons to frametrap with

Ok so is it that if I block a typical 5LL2M5M blockstring into a ki blast, why can’t I super dash or reflect the ki blast. Last time I check ki blasts aren’t a true blockstring and I should be able to superdash/reflect while blocking ki blasts. So why I get my reflect AFTER the ki blasts hit me? Can anyone explain this?
@xOptoger
@xOptoger 5 жыл бұрын
The normal before the ki blast jails into it which is why you cant move until AFTER it hits. it's not the ki blasts fault it's the normal before it.
@dekillsage
@dekillsage 5 жыл бұрын
Normals typically jail into ki blasts, and you only get the ability to guard cancel ~after~ you've blocked a ki blast!
