No, Kondo wanted him. Early into the fight on Earth, he claimed female fans loved him. I have no idea how he could be so right. AT was taken aback, but went along with it. The original plan was for Vegeta to lose the rematch and die as main villain, but instead Frieza (with Kondo's personality) was made to fill that role. Vegeta was killed at all BECAUSE of fans asking for him to live. Toribot hates fan requests. Want Bulma with Goku? Fuck you, he gets the flat hag literal-who (becoming a tiger mom insert of Akira's wife). Bulma? Leaves Yamcha for Vegeta (of course). Want Goku to win Budokai? **raffs** Jobs him out twice. They stop asking? He finally wins. Amazin'. As for Vegeta, he was fated to stick around, but requesting that saw him put in his grave faster than his sins (not all that much in canon, but a handful of Nameks is still not a clean slate). For a few chapters, anyway. Kondo is also the one who put a stop to moving goalpost insert Roshi's antics (along with stupid gag characters). King Piccolo (based on previous editor) results. First thing that happens? Krillin gets killed (off-panel, too). Hilarious. Kondo leaves just after Cell reaches perfection. Result? Satan (and Gohan taking over at random). Then the Buu Saga fiasco ('yes men' letting him do whatever).

From villain, to a kind of neutral party on namek, to being an ally that let his pride endanger others, to a relatable character that when it comes to combat, he is no nonsense, he ends the fight as efficiently as possible, and of course has found his humanity.

Piccolo recently becomes his favorite along with goku. When he was writing Z, it was solely goku. Piccolo became one of his favorite post-2010s otherwise he was just goku alone

As a writer myself, I think it's pretty common to have one character that you just hate, but come to love. Or at the very least, tolerate. As a fan of Dragonball Z, that character Vegeta as well. But over time I came around because he's come a long way since I was a kid. While he's not my absolute favorite, he's managed to worm his way into my top 5. I'm glad he stuck around, and I hope the same remains true until the very end.
