It was strange though that after Devimon's death they still seemed surprised when Gennai told them they had to evolve one more time. However, they had faced two Ultimates/Perfects before that (although Monzaemon's level was never brought up by the kids).

@@KasaiWolf07 I remember that when they saw Andromon for the first time, some Chosen Digimon (probably Gomamon, Agumon, and Biyomon, it's been a while when I watched that ep) at least clearly talked about Andromon being well developed and way stronger than the likes of Greymon & Garurumon. And yeah, it doesn't automatically imply a higher level, but at least it was hinted that he was clearly better than those Chosen Champions. Of course, it could be that it varied with the dubs, some dubs might not have mentioned anything. Instead, nothing was said about Monzaemon and this sometimes made me think that the writers remembered that Andromon was an Ultimate, but they forgot that Monzaemon was Ultimate as well. It would also explain why Monzaemon lost pretty damn quickly against a single Champion, while Andromon seemed pretty overpowered and he only lost because Kabuterimon hit him into his weak spot. Maybe this wasn't the case though.

What’s with the weird changes in size of the digimon. One minute they’re about twice the size of the kids, the next they’re about 50 times the size. Is this ever explained?

It's more of an animation inconsistency rather than an in-universe thing. The 90's didn't have the technology we have today,thus almost all frames were drawn by hand.

@@agustinnegro8854 Yeah exactly. And here we also basically saw that Andromon was just not that good against a flying opponent. We also saw the same thing at the end of the season where Andromon was able to face both Mugendramon and Piedmon in 1v1, but he couldn't do much against LadyDevimon who was much weaker than those Dark Masters. Sure, Piedmon could still fly actually but unlike LadyDevimon, he still mostly fought on the ground. The 2020 version also apparently followed the same line because there Andromon lost vs Lillymon.

He did it only because he hit his weak point. Togemon and Angemon did it more clearly though, Togemon didn't need another Digimon's help to beat Monzaemon, and Angemon didn't need any help to beat Phantomon. The latter was quite amusing since Angemon didn't even aim Phantomon, it was Vamdemon/Myotismon he actually targeted and Phantomon just absorbed a small portion of his attack.

@@HabeasC What's even weirder about Togemon is that she couldn't beat DarkTyrannomon, a Champion, and had to digivolve to Ultimate to beat him. Yet she was perfectly fine defeating Monzaemon, an Ultimate, while in her Champion form

@@HazarTulum Well if we talk about raw physical strength, Monzaemon was an extremely weak Ultimate/Perfect: he was more of a mindfucker than an actual fighter. That often applies to Puppet type Digimon except Etemon who was a pretty good in physical combat. And probably Puppetmon since at least he had enough physical strength to move both WarGreymon and MetalEtemon with his wires. So that's why Togemon (who's a good melee fighter) fared so well against him. I would say that Togemon was physically stronger than the average Champion anyway considering how quickly she took on Kokatorimon and I consider Kokatorimon as an average Champion (at least could easily beat multiple Rookies at once). Then again, DarkTyrannomon is a complete opposite of Monzaemon, he's a brainless but physical powerhouse as a Champion. So it wasn't that weird imo since DarkTyrannomon was anyway bigger of the two and he has more firepower than Togemon has. Togemon is also allegedly weak vs Fire moves, she still took Fire attacks from SkullMeramon but she screamed in pain (and MetalGreymon was the only opponent that SkullMeramon really took seriously). So yeah I mean some Digimon are physically quite weak for their level. Piedmon is also a bit like that because both Andromon & Angemon matched Piedmon in physical fight but Piedmon basically killed WarGreymon with energy attack in earlier (Garurumon had to revive him). And I think most Champions could overpower Lillymon in a physical fight but most Champions aren't tanking her Flower Cannon.

This was a fucking PIS because later Andromon was even able to hold his own against Machinedramon and Piedmon (for a while). Kabuterimon is about 100 times weaker than Machinedramon or Piedmon or even more so he should be able to kill Kabuterimon in seconds.
