DBXL-E 2.0 front end rebuild

In this video we dig deep into the front end of the Losi 5th scale desert buggy. Playing the part of newbie, AJ destroys the front end of his DBXL-E to help others learn how easy it can be to repair RC cars in general. Intentionally smashing your prize RC is not something AJ is used to doing, and it takes nerve for him to do it, but the video is set to help others, so he finds himself having to bite the bullet and wreck the thing. Come along as AJ walks you through the rebuild in the hopes that this sacrifice is worth the effort.

Great video. I have the Traxxas XRT, and looking to get the Losi DBXL-E 2.0 rather than the X Maxx because I like to "drive" more than do big air. This was a great video and I really like that you actually put your own equipment to the test to show the rest of us how to fix it. It didn't look by the parts that were broken that it cost that much to fix, other than the new servo and servo arms that is. Thanks for the video! Much appreciated.

Y’know, INTEGY Aluminum has never failed me! I had some Integy Aluminum on my baja! I also dropped $340 on four big bore shocks from Europe! 😳 But yes, I’d just go Integy for some parts mates, they’re very strong, thick bits of aluminum!

I utterly had this accident today although I hit a small tree not intentionally of course but it broke the A arm, lower control arm and sway arm. At 30lbs that bruiser really doesnt have to be going to fast to do some real damage. Your repair was nearly exactly everything I needed. The only issue I had was the shock would not come out of the A arm. The screw from the factory had been stripped and would not turn out. It was ironic that you mentioned not over torquing the screws as mine came from the factory that way. Fortunately, I had to replace the A arm anyway so I simply cut out the screw and shock from it. Everything else was nearly identical as far as removal and replacement. Luckily no damage to the servo or box etc. Another thanks for a great video!

I really appreciate you doing this video. You're a good guy always looking to help out others at your own expense. The thing that confuses me with tear downs is all the different screws and screw sizes. It can get super confusing imo. I never could believe how the guys who would tear a truck way down while putting the different screws in a big pile

I agree. however, there are time when I know exactly where each screw goes and I'll bowl them for convenience, but most of the time I keep them separate so I don't make mistakes. Losing control over the screws can triple your build time. Thanks for the comment. 😎👍

Good question. Yes, my whole life. When I began this hobby we had to pirate parts from toys and cut out our own chassis to assemble our cars. Radios had around a 12 foot radius for control, and the speeds were pathetic, but it was still fun. Building was necessary, not an option. Kits were just beginning to hit the market, but I'd been building for a while already. Racing hit the area and I'd just married my wife, so we began our trek into racing. The rest is history. When we discovered the new RCs on the market (Bashers) we, along with our friends, began this channel to help the community. Here we are now! Thanks for participating 😎👍

As a nube I'd suggest having the exploded parts diagram open on the table and figure out the part number of each damaged part as you go and write it down. At the end of the teardown you have the list of parts you need to buy. lg

Exactly. I use the explode each time I need parts. One, it helps you find the exact part you need, while avoiding look alike parts that simply won't fit your car. And two, usually the explode helps you see how things are put together if you get confused. Thanks for the comment. AJ

Did you have to re bind your transmitter and set the end points on your servo?

No I did not. I thought I was going to have to re-bind due to the new hardware, but the new servo fit right in and I had to make no changes in that regard. Thanks for asking. AJ

This may hurt a lot of you guys including me, but i understand the purpose of this. When i bought my first RC car i thought 'ooh no big deal, i can handle this!' and ran it high speed into walls and what not and broke pretty much everything on the vehicle. It made me realise that i was fortunate enough that i never hit anyone out there, because as you know, these cars GO, and they go fast. You DO NOT want to get hit by an rc car that hits 50mph+ Maybe this isn't what the video's about, but definitely something to keep in mind when you're driving these cars!

You are spot on, these cars are not really toys they are machines and they carry a lot of inertia. Broken bones are not uncommon with cars of this size and power. Practice and practical application for operating these machines is something that should be accomplished before picking up a controller of a vehicle this size. I cannot stress this point enough. An example is, I was playing with a Granite, an Arrma 3s truck, and struck my own foot breaking my toe in the process. The Granite is a smallish vehicle that carries little weight. Still, it broke my toe and that was through a leather shoe. Now imagine the weight of a 5th scale, weighing 25 plus pounds, traveling at speed, 40 to 50 MPH. PLEASE DRIVE THEM CAREFULLY, for the sake of those around you. Thanks for bringing this up. AJ

I've had the dbxl-e 2.0 for almost a year now ( Jan will be a year), in that time I've hit a lot of things, broken a lot of parts and replaced. I've also managed to hit myself twice. 1st time the car was only doing 10-15 mph and it only knocked my right foot out the way. The 2nd time, well, it was doing 25-30 mph. By this time I've already done quit a bit of upgrades so the car weighed about 35 lbs. While no bones were broken, it did knock my feet out from under me and I hit the ground hard and was sore for a few days after. Edit: I've finally learned not to hit things including myself. But I also don't really bash mine like I did when I 1st got it. I'm more interested in speed runs so I try to find the biggest open field I can. I also don't run it if a lot of people are around because if you have it going 55+ mph and someone decides at that time to cross paths with the car, it won't stop in time. Going that fast will do a lot of damage, broken bones, torn flesh and possible death.

Whiskey throttle is common among new people. It takes time to build up the reflexes you need to maintain control of your car. Sometimes it’s just too cool to see and a person winds up watching instead of driving; it happens to us all at one point or another. Thanks for sharing 😎👍

when we are in a kinda public place we get always ask can I drive it. And the standard answer is, look its not that easy as it looks and you should first start with smaller ones. So no you cant. Most of them are kinda angry then a few say oh that makes sense. Its like that stupid first question: How fast is it? Man does it matter, look at the car and how its build instead :D By the way what you broke is also because there is to much aluminium. So less travel on impact. And the tires are to big.

It can be difficult bashing in a public place, that's why you never see that on my channel. To add to your comment of questions asked, How high will it jump? And then, You should jump it. But then there is always the comment, Dude, that's so cool. Followed by the one you mentioned, Can I try it? Like I said, it can be tough. I never like saying no, but I'm usually forced to. I do like running in groups, but usually only with my bashing buddies. Running big cars is inherently dangerous and playing with noobs can get someone sent to the hospital. And you're right, start small and work your way up. As far as to why it broke, there's really very little aluminum in that area of the suspension. And the impact shoved the arm backward in a direction it was never intended to go. The aluminum part was actually the first part to go, causing a cascade of other parts to fail. It was hard for me to intentionally send that thing into that situation. I love that car, it's big, bad and brutal, so trashing it was a difficult thing to do, but I think it was worth it if it helps others. Thanks for the comment. AJ
