If you re-read / watch the fight with Ichigo, you will see that he dominates Ichigo in his Mask Form, he can't even fight back. He only ends up beating GrimmJow because his power Spikes to past Ulquiorra's level* for a brief moment, allowing Ichigo to land a few Fatal Blows. *Note:* Ulquiorra, himself, states that Ichigo's power was fluctuating in his Mask form. At it's lowest, he was weaker than Yammy, but at it's highest, it was higher than his own. The Espada Ranks are based off of pure Reitsu Level, so Ulquiorra is #4 in Raw Reitsu. Even in his Released state, he is still #4. GrimmJow is the same, he is #6. Yammy is #10, then #0. So we know that their numbers will change after their transformation, if their innate Reitsu Level changes. *Conclusion:* For brief moments, GrimmJow was fighting an equivalent to a #3 Espada, be it Nel, or Halibel. Which is 3 Ranks higher than himself, as GrimmJow was #6. In the end, Ichigo barely won and #5 took them both out.

The reason why Ulquiorra was different and more popular than the other Espada was not his Segunda Etapa. It was because of his personality. He is the definition of a Hollow (Emptiness). His nihilism and servitude to Aizen describes him. That for him, hollows are just slaves to something (be it hunger when they are just mindless hollows, or survival under someone when they become arrancars) and shouldn't have emotions other than the survival instinct. This is what defines Ulquiorra as probably the most Hollow of everyone. Grimmjow on the other hand is the ambition to evolve, to be the predator. However there's always bigger fish to catch. And it contradicts with Ichigo, how he gets stronger to protect, while Grimmjow gets stronger to be the king. It's a nice touch that these were Ichigo's primary rivals during the Hueco Mundo arc.

Do you think that GrimmJow could take Hueco Mundo by force now? I do. Halibel was only #3 because her Gimmicky Power would compound in Strength, the longer the fight, as more and more water is produced. However, in a straight fight, I wouldn't put any Espada above GrimmJow.

That is a very cool observation! I think it's very cool that Ulquiorra, in his full hollow form has to fight Ichigo's inner Hollow - White - that happens to also be the personification of Ichigo's survival instinct. Ichigo's survival instinct (and its ability to exist/coexist with Ichigo's other emotions) was so much stronger than Ulquiorra's emptiness that it made Ulquiorra understand emotions.

well Ulquiorra was different even by his skin - he was white other hollows were black. If I recall well it was said that white hollows are born from shinigami… there is so much that wasn’t fully explained about Ulquiorra, I would not be surprised if we would see him again in hell arc. It’s strange that such a character disappeared without even any flashbacks or something.

Also, Ulquiorra was a Nihilist and didn't believe in an Afterlife. Being in Hell, might affect his personality or beliefs, making him potentially weaker, as "resolve" is a huge power in Bleach.

In my mind, Ulquiorra was special because he was the only one who knew how to perform a second release, indicating that he was the Espada with the greatest amount of understanding of himself. Bleach training is different from training in other anime after all in that you gain much more by meditating and communicating with your Zanpakto as opposed to traditional means. I think this makes sense as Ulquiorra was really the only one of the espada chill enough and in tune with himself to really focus on what made him... him. I think characters like Nel may have also been on the verge of a Segunda Etapa but still had some mental blocks preventing them from getting there (like how Ichigo had mental blocks prior to The Blade is Me). Hollows are more instinctual creatures, so it makes sense that many/most of them wouldn't take the time to communicate with their Zanpakto

The advanced hollows like the Espada have zanpakuto but that's where the similarity ends. It's not an Asauchi like that of shinigami but rather a seal to store the core of their power and true body. There is not partner at all for resurrection so they don't grow through communication and meditation like shinigami. Perhaps more understanding of self sure, but not of zanpakuto.

I also think it’s a little weird that a bankai could be stolen but somehow leave behind the Shinigami’s shikai. I think the swords act like a seal on their actual power, just like it does for hollows.

I think Grimmjow's Second Resurrection is by far the sexiest of all of the Espada. He really is a wild cat in attitude and behavior. Arrancar from the start were very similar to Zanpakuto, an inverse of a Soul Reaper. Soul Reapers's Zanpakuto are sealed then go through two transformations, each revealing more of its true rorm and power. While Arrancar use Zanpakuto as seals on their power when released they are the ones who transform and reveal their true form and power. So it makes sense that the regular Ressurection is in fact more akin to a Shikai than a Bankai, and that the Segunda Etapa is the real Bankai type transformation, the REAL true form and power of the Arrancar.

I actually would like Grimmjow to have a Segunda Etapa. He has proven he is different from the other Arrancar with his personality alone. He has actually evolved and grown as a character and that growth alone, and his want to do so sets him apart from the others Arrancar. I believe he is just as unique as Ulquiorra as he made himself an Arrancar out of the want to better himself and be king as it were. The others didn't have that drive in my opinion. Like Ichigo, he has always strived to be the best and accepted the challenges thrown at him. He is a great character and I truly hope they give him more of the due, I believe, he deserves.

I actually have a similar thought process for this. While it was said that resurreccion was equivalent to a bankai in POWER, the way an arrancar activates it is closer to how a shinigami would activate their shikai. Add the fact that arrancars are hollows that were able to take off their masks to gain power incredibly similar to a shinigami, to the point they gain a humanoid form (some so close to looking human the only way you know they aren’t is the mask fragment and hollow hole) and their weapons are still flat out called zanpakuto, it makes sense that they would have their own equivalent of a shinigamis bankai in terms of stages.

I LOVE THE Release command aspect in Bleach. Question why doesn't ichigo have a command? Getsuga Tenshou isnt a command. BUT FEAR NOT!!!! Fellow travelers for I created THE COMMAND. I have some doubts about Grimmjow’s second release. We don’t know why Ulquiorra was the only one with second release. My guess is that he was white skinned hollow, which should be the ones that were born from shinigami not from humans… that can be a reason why he was the only one. remember that not even Barragan had second release. Grimmjow wasn’t even one of the 4 strongest. In bleach brave souls all the espada had second release, only Ulquiorra again had the third release…

*Argument:* GrimmJow was always the strongest of the Espada. His powers weren't the strongest, however, his Battle Senses were. Out of all the other Espada, GrimmJow is the ONLY one that combines multiple techniques in non-stop combat. Even when he had one arm, he was still able to pin Ichigo's Arms, with his sword, then fire a point-blank Cero to Ichigo's face. All the other Espada have Gimmicky Powers, even Ulquiorra.

Even the lower one's that showed up in kara town when they 1st invaded basically what he grimmjow did was a 1st release or going into their true form but as someone stated from club outside and kubo the Q.shiffer was the 1st use Segunda Etapa but also said the other Espada can also 🔓 unlocked or Segunda Etapa or most would call a second resurrection . Wish those brave souls forms they had were made cannon or anime cannon image if being in Hell brought those forms out given there only because of the h.crystal in brave souls.
