Because there are so many questions surrounding the tech inside the new DC-1 (a computer made by the Daylight Company), I thought I'd see what I could make of it (I don't have the device) and maybe shed some light on the technology behind the "Paper-Like" display. Enjoy!

There is no evidence that blue light from normal screen and LED usage causes any kind of eye health or vision problems [1]. [1] Cougnard-Gregoire, A., Merle, B.M.J., Aslam, T. et al. Blue Light Exposure: Ocular Hazards and Prevention-A Narrative Review. Ophthalmol Ther 12, 755-788 (2023)

Screens, maybe not, LED bulbs? Wouldn't be so sure. Ming Jin, Xiongfeng Li, Feng Yan, Weixin Chen, Lei Jiang, Xu Zhang, The effects of low-color-temperature dual-primary-color light-emitting diodes on three kinds of retinal cells, Journal of Photochemistry and Photobiology B: Biology, Volume 214, 2021, 112099, ISSN 1011-1344, "Fluorescent white LEDs, even those with color temperatures as low as 3000 K, cause certain damage to retinal cells. The new low-color-temperature dual-primary-color LEDs do not cause damage to three types of retinal cells because they do not emit blue light; rather, the light they emit is composed mainly of red and yellow dual-color light" There's also the issue with blue light and circadian rhythm, sleep quality and sleep duration

You’re arguing against a straw man. The reason why blue light can have a negative impact on health is not because it damages your eye. The reason many people avoid it at night time is because blue light disturbs the circadian rhythm which can result in worse sleep and other downstream effects like hormonal imbalances.

* when exposed to at night time. The sun emits a light at that same frequency (blue light) during the day which is when we want to be stimulated and active. I encourage you to listen to any of the many podcasts the CEO, Anjan Katta, has been on so you understand the actual claims and reasons why he created the device

@@randoguy7488 Thanks for your reply. The methods of the study you cited detail that these were growth cells irradiated for 24 continuous hours. Its a very interesting study but the results don't translate to normal exposure to the human eye. The study I cited shows that there is no evidence of eye health or vision problems for both screen usage and LED exposure at normal domestic levels.

Hey Roderick, New to your channel, always great to have more people to focus on EInk devices! Your graph was spot on, by being in the middle between EInk and LCD you really loose all the benefits of either. I also don't understand their approach on how this is a more focused device while also highlighting 60fps - for me this would mean that sooner or later I would install KZbin or Netflix and just watch it in Black and White 😂 If they clean up their communication and are more straightforward about their product, I wish them all the best, but I for one will stick with my Boox Note Air 3 where apps like KZbin are basically unusable, and I love that. For people like us, I think EInk is already a pretty perfect technology, I have no interest in faster refresh rates or things like that.
@rantsabouttechnology
@rantsabouttechnology 2 ай бұрын
You're absolutely right. eink as it stands today isn't perfect, but I think it is perfect for what I/we use it for. The DL1 just doesn't solve any problems, just creates new ones you have to make new compromises to utilize 😑 Thanks for stopping by.

I really like the display and I'd love to use one and compare to my remarkable. That being said the device as a whole is thick and expensive, compared to my remarkable which go for a lot less, a lot thinner, longer battery, but it's e-ink and not the fluid refresh of a transflexive LCD. Personally I *DO* feel that limited functionality is a feature, and it's why I love my Remarkable so much. Yes you can turn off notifications, but the temptation is always there "I'll just add my email" "I'll just add this one app that's useful". Next thing you know your tablet is like your smartphone full of apps and notifications. For me, removing the temptation by removing the functionality is the only way to guarantee the device remains distraction free.

He's wicked smart. He does better reviews on stuff he doesn't have better than 90% of other KZbinrs. Have you seen the actual reviews on this technology? They suck. They tell you less than this. None of them said anything about what the technology is? Oh, and the company "accidentally" sent out the earlier prototype to the reviewers, sent them a new one, and asked for a do-over. The difference here is that you have someone putting thought and research into what he's presenting. He also has killer presentation skills. There's absolutely NO way you can "not" like him. And at least he's explaining the technologies. You won't see a review that even mentions it.

@@VidMashUp I know 100% what you mean. But as of a "reaction" video I thought I'm getting a reaction on how the display is performing. Everything he did is research it for me, but I can do that on my own. If he would have a sample display and I can get a legit reaction from him - that's something I cannot do and has added value for me. The video - for me - has no value. For others it probably has because most people are too lazy to research on their own or to follow technology trends with news pages.

🙋‍♂Hi Roderick! There is a KZbinr "Joshua Chang" that has some things to say about this device. I do love 💚minimalism, though I do watch "KZbin" for those channels I subscribe to, and that is the end of it for me and go back to my minimalist lifestyle to the best of my capabilities. I don't think this device is cheap or worth the cost in my opinion, but I tend to be wrong time to time..." Ok, more than I like to admit to" 🤣 Always I enjoy watching your videos and as always kudos from NYC.🗽

E-Ink is patented and basically a monopoly afaik. You either gotta make something novel like shown here or use existing tech. Both options are expensive, I don't know when those patents will expire.

@rantsabouttechnology
@rantsabouttechnology 2 ай бұрын
Wait I totally misunderstood you comment initially. After re-reading it... I think there's a 20 year patent law (which it's been that already for eInk, circa 1998). But even with it expired, you're right, it's expensive to manufacture - for the market size. I do know that until someone else enters the race, it's gonna be a slow one.
@liquicitizendirk2147
@liquicitizendirk2147 2 ай бұрын
@@rantsabouttechnology Yup, there's a 20 year limit to patents, but the company e-ink has tons of patents, which companies would probably infringe upon. Especially with new stuff coming out like colored e-ink displays. In addition to that I think the market size is already pretty substantial, 15 to 20% of people own a smart reader, the prices remain high due to the monopoly e-ink holdings has. They made like 7 Billion in profits with 27 Billion in Revenue.

This feels like some crazy scientist trying to put “soul” into a game boy screen with the size and weight of a chunky 2010 Chinese mainland OEM tablet, hoping it will come to life. Thanks for keeping your rants strictly to the technology… or the lack of it.. instead of talking about the hippie guru-wannabe ceo in a room full of 6 years worth of post-its, talking about everything but their tech in their initial launch video of a tech product. Their marketing team kinda messed it up here. Coming from an angel investor in tech startups, I pity the souls of middle class folks who put $729 of their hard earned money into the hands of this team just so they can try to break even from their 6 years of sunken investments.

The marketing team didn’t mess up anything. They are sold out until the end of the year. They just marketed to their niche audience instead of pandering to everyone like apple and the rest of big tech. The people buying the product understand that the price is what it is because this is startup so the demand is not high enough yet to be able to have lower production costs. They don’t have the supply chain and demand apple has. Shocker, I know! So yeah you can buy an android tablet for less, but some people put a premium on the features this tablet has because they value their health more than saving a couple hundred bucks.

@@an0nguesst Oh don’t get me wrong, I wish nothing but the best for companies that will make the world a better place with innovative technologies. I’m sure this company aspires to do the same as well and will probably be more successful if they have been more upfront about their tech. There’s nothing wrong or ashamed by being honest about what screen technology the product is using. That’s the part that was missing in their product launch video and on their website at launch. I’m genuinely happy they’ve sold out. This means we will have more reviewers reviewing the product and I’m excited to see what’s the hype about, and how it fares against eink, which they’ve clearly identified as the tech they wish to compete against. :)
@angal26
@angal26 2 ай бұрын
@@an0nguesst Correct me if i’m wrong, but I doubt they are here to take market share away from Apple, if they really aspire to do so, then they’ve missed something. If their niche audience is eink/ epaper tablet users like myself, then this company has to be more transparent in their communication materials. Again, just pointing out what was missing from their materials. I’ve got no problem for guru-wannabes to be a real guru to sell tech products. Just give us what we are looking out for: remove the fluffy language and tell us what screen tech is being used here.
