Like. I'm using one today on a Ryobi 18v One+ charger. 2nd build, this time with a 24v xfmr stepped down to 20.5v using the XL4016. I tried step up with a small 12v xfmr but could only get about 90ma. Your video gives me confidence, I hope I don't die.

Hi, Thanks for taking time to put these modules under test. This is very useful 'real world' information that can't be found on the datasheet. In future, may I suggest adding these very common use cases: in=24V out=12V, (Optionally 5V and 3V3?) in=12V out=5V, (Optionally 3V3?) in=5V out=3V3 I find them less efficient at the higher input voltages.. Good luck..

I got one of this from china, and subjected it to 38 volts dc supply, and within seconds two capacitors from the input side blew up. Turns out they were rated at 35 V - 1000 microfarads. I noted the outgoing capacitors were rated at 50 Volts 470 microfarads. So I figured they must have been swaped by mistake. I changed the out going capacitors be the input capacitors and replaced the blown 35 volts capacitors. Works out great now. handling upto 42 volts input.

Would it work on a raspberry pi3 with a 10inch touch screen? I tried 2 pcs Lm2596 to convert 28v dc to 12v and 5v respectively. Saw the voltage jumps for a split second. The video board can power the pi thru usb.
@robojax
@robojax 6 жыл бұрын
Raspberry pi3 needs way less power. this is very powerful. My test showed this module is very stable with under 6A. Raspberry pi need less than 1A and the screen might need another 1 or 2 A. So you have 3 times more power.

Great video! I have a question, I have several laptop/tv/printer chargers lying around (12 to 36V). What module do you recommend for me to turn it into a sort of bench power supply? Requirements are that it should be cheap, capable of handling up to say 5A, thanks!
@robojax
@robojax 6 жыл бұрын
I don't know specifically which will have more power. But you can read the current rate as amper or power as watt. The higher the power, the larger the size of power adapter. So you need to multiply your required voltage by 5A and whatever power you got, just add 10% to 15% to it and select the adapter that is equal or higher than Power+10%Power.

There are so many potions. This module would be the best. But if you pick exact 5A, it will not work because it will give you 5A under strict condition. So pick something 2 or 3A higher. eBay is your best search option.

im newbie with in times of power supply .. my source is 12 v (4 amp) = my device is 6 volts.. (what if my device need 3 amp to work) soo do i have to adjust the power supply ampire more than 3 amp ("5 amp")? or let it be zero..? it will just automatically ? i notice u didn't adjust the ampire adjuster in power supply.
@robojax
@robojax 4 жыл бұрын
Ampere is the current. If you have a drive that works with 10V 1A, You can connect it to 10V 1000A and that is fine because your device will draw only 1A. So the current is always determined by the load and not by the power supply. Your power supply should "supply" enough for the load. If Your power supply can supply more that is excess. But no harm.

Thanks for the review, but have you done any stress tests by any chance? I am using 1 with up to 30V input (7s lithium battery) for 12V output to power a PC with a picopsu at 3-4A. It works but gets hot so i'm concerned about leaving it on over night. It would be good to know how it would hold up at say 4-5A over a week with temperatures.

I'm sorry for being a newbie. But what exactly it means, when the LED changes to red? Also, do you think I could find shorts in a circuit with this, like it was a normal bench PSU?
@robojax
@robojax 6 жыл бұрын
the RED LED means that your load is drawing to the maximum set (current limit) or maximum allowed current. Yes it will let when there is short circuit. It is possible that you have set the current so low (minimum), even when there is no load, the current limiter kicks in. So measure the input current (connect ammeter in series with your power supply and this module), then short circuit the output and rotate the potentiometer with screwdriver and set the current to just above your expected value. Example set it to 2A.

Hi Robojax, I just bought one of these XL4016 modules, hooked it up correctly, applied 6 volts to start and started turning the voltage cw. The red light came on right away and the voltage decreased from 4.8 to 2.9 and stayed there. Turning voltage and current pots either way does nothing, stays at 2.9 volts with the red light on. Gave it 18 volts DC and still nothing. Any ideas?

Job of the diode is to allow the current to flow in one direction. If you want to block the current from outside to come to this module when the other source has higher voltage, then Yes put a diode and it will block the current from entering to this .

@robojax
@robojax 6 жыл бұрын
Yes it is possible to do it. If you look at the data sheet for XL4016 IC that is used in this module, it has a SW or Switch pin. In this module the SW pin is always HIGH so it has power at output. Check it and see to cut path on PCB and connect your own wire to the SW pin and control it from outside . Here is data sheet www.xlsemi.com/datasheet/xl4016%20datasheet.pdf
@KennethTanFotografie
@KennethTanFotografie 6 жыл бұрын
Robojax That is not correct. The SW pin is the actual output. There is a schematic on page 7 that show how it can be done with a resistor and a diode, a pwm ttl signal can be fed to the FB pin and the SW output can be turned of and on. There is no data on frequency of this signal and how the SW output behaves. I'm going to test this.

you are wight. I quickly give you wrong info from Table 1. The SW pin as shown in Figure 3 is just the output stage of the chip. As shown in Figure 9, you can do it with FB pin as you mention.

Hello, I want to make a regulated power supply from the minus working computer power supply, I need a voltage converter for this, you have tested many voltage converters, which advice would you give me?
@robojax
@robojax 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, you have so many options. Computer power supply has only 5V and 12V with lots of power depending how powerful your power supply is. if you need 5V and 12V, then you don't need converter. First you have to know what voltage you need. if higher than 12V, then you need boost convert so you can get higher voltage like 15V or 30V output. If you need lower than 12V or 5V then you need step-down converter or Buck converter . in Any case you need to know the amount of current at output. For example if you need 5A then get 5A converter.

Hi, your solar panel is 50W and voltage doesn't matter. Now you want to get P=IxV, where P=power in Watt, I=Current in A and V is voltage. for battery you want to get V=24V and I=7A, so P=IxV=7x24=168W. Never possible. you have $50 and want to purchase $168 goodes. you can only get 50W-(15% to 20%) . Voltage and current doesn't matter as long as the product (multiplication) of them is equal to P-Losses
@EJEuth
@EJEuth 5 ай бұрын
We observed the module maintains the RED Led on, even with 7.5A. It would mean, at least for me the circuit is limiting the current, or close to do so. That might explain the voltage drops we saw at 7.5A and the more drastic voltage fall at 9A~8A. There is another channel that modified the circuit to increase the CC operation from switched (in the current loop) to linear, adding a 100K resistor in the feedback of one of the LM358’s OpAmp. This made it work linearly, instead of a On-Off comparator.

any module with Constant Current (CC) can control the output current and protect the device. (this you have to know first). You will connect your current meter between this module and power supply. then for example set output voltage to 5V. For example if you want to set maximum current to 3A, Then short circuit the output of this module and read the current on your current meter (ammeter). Adjust the knob until 3A current is displayed. Remove the short circuit from the output and your power supply never allow more than 3A.

if this module can supply 9A=9000mA and you want 20mA, it means 20x100÷9000=0.22%. the potentiometer used in this module has 10% tolerance in best case it has 5%. so you can never set less than 10% of the current 900mA or in best case 5% which is 450mA. The answer is NO. If you are looking for 20mA, then get something with about 1000mA maximum current or even 500mA so you can set 20mA. good luck.
