I ordered a bunch of these, when they first came out I paid less than $1.00 USD each, but I purchased a bunch of them. I never used them because bigger and better ones came out. These work best if your input is very close to your output. Hooked up to the car battery 13.8v and I need 12v @ 1.5amp I stand a good chance, even 2.0amp maybe with a small heatsink from a Raspberry PI

Thanks! I was testing one for 1st time and it was getting warm (though not hot) powering an esp32 at 5v from 12v. I didn't realise it had an LED until I saw your video, why? Because the Led on mine was mis-soldered from the top pad to the positive side of the capacitor! Testing one without a badly soldered LED and it is much cooler. Worth checking the soldering on these modules.

Hook one of these things up to a scope under load. I've been messing with one trying to adapt it into a bench power supply, and the ripple is just unreal above 100mA or so. Across a 15 ohm load at about 15v (1A), and I was seeing around 300mV p-p ripple. With some filtering I can get it down to about 150mV. This is with a different module that has a real heatsink on the LM2596. I tested it at 2A (30V/15 ohm) and the ripple stayed about the same, but the inductor on the board would start squealing within certain voltage ranges (27-29v). Then would quiet down right at 30V. But it uses the same 4.7uH inductor that yours does. As another person commented, it just needs more inductance for a full 3A.

The LM2596 device IS capable of 3A. This module is sold on the 3A thing, but it is not able to sustain that as you have found out. Not without some changes to the design. However having said that, they are a great little module, and if you are not planning to load it up to 100%, they work very well. The price of these things is so cheap, something has to give, and it is the lack of proper heatsinking for higher output currents. ;) I would not want to push them past 2A - ever. Not unless you WANT a nuclear meltdown. :D Nice video. :)

Robojax's conclusions are all correct, but I still like these modules. They are RATED for 3A, but that does not mean you can actually suck 3A from them(with this design) on a 100% duty-cycle. ;) They work really well as a sporadic PSU running a PTT transmitter or thermal printer, where the load is only present for a short time. They can easily pass the full 3A, but just not continuously. ;) 50/50 on-off duty-cycle for 2A, and 25/75 on-off duty cycle for 3A works though. :) For anything needing 100% load, they need heatsinking and lots of it, as heat is an electronics killer... :p I would not recommend these be used at 100% load for anything over 1A.

@VauxhallViva1975
@VauxhallViva1975 4 жыл бұрын
@@Royd20 Yes, the voltage will remain constant BUT the heat dissipation will vary depending on the input voltage and the output current. As both the input voltage and output current are changing in your example, the voltage should remain constant for low-duty-cycle loads, but the dissipation will be all over the place depending on the input voltage vs output load. It's tricky if you have a varying input voltage and output load. ;) If you mean that you want 12v out, but the input can vary up and down, that is fine. But you still need to calculate the heat dissipation to make sure you don't blow up the regulator. Essentially, the higher the input voltage, the less output current you can suck from the regulator, as the difference is dissipated in heat. Regulators like this are very efficient compared to the older linear ones, but even these need heatsinks if you are trying to suck 100% load from them with much of an input-output voltage difference.. Try to maintain the smallest input-output voltage differential, to get the best results and highest current from the setup. :)

At 3V, 3A out, from the efficiency of 73% (cf. datasheet) you know the dissipation must be 27% of 9W = 2,43W. At 12V out, eff is better: 90%. I'd recommend cooling for everything above 1W. And please use a thermometer. They're not expensive and fingers are ... ridiculus ;)

It would have been helpful to have a table summarising the results, as it was not lear re the time taken to the temperature reaching a certain temperature, at what amps and target voltage so we can tell if it is just related to the current or the difference in source and target valtage.This was said not to criticise but try and be helpful, . Hmmmm. I have a thought to put this in my testing power supply until I get a proper regulating circuit. With 38V at the input, it is working fine. But then I applied some stress. I set the output voltage to 33V I think the indicating LED is already burning. Then I tried to go all in and I think it burned at 2.5 A No smoke but dead. I think it is designed mainly for lower voltages let say to 24V. and probably 2A max without some proper cooling. In the datasheet are mainly measurements for 3.3V, 5V and 12V no info for higher voltages.

I have seen a review of your video about the LM2596 and XL4015 modules. I was thinking about how to stabilize the ic temperature when working full load. Now I have thoughts below, but I want to ask for your personal opinion. According to you : Can ic xl4015 (with the use of constant current 5A) or lm2596 (with the use of constant current 2A) be separated from the default board and then extended pinout the legs ic using a good cable and then attach it to a heatsink that has the fan? For example, it is affixed to an old VGA card fan heatsink where the power to turn it on comes from the input power module. I mean that the 3.42A / 19V (laptop charger) power source is coupled to the IC 7812 input (with a heatsink) then outputs the IC 7812 to the VGA card fan. By the way, in your opinion, which is more accurate in measuring currents using a common digital multimeter or digital volt and ammeter panel? Thank you in advance and greetings from Indonesia.. Hi all, do not buy this modules from china. They cost around 1Eur because they use some Chinese clone of the LM2596 which runs on 55-75kHz. Original Ti LM2596 cost around 3Eur. You can check the frequency of the switching - original runs on 150kHz. I did test of Chinese clones at specific overload conditions (3A, more than 70 Cdeg) will increase output voltage around 1,2V which can kill everything connected.

you know I made this video so people find answers. I have tested with many current and voltage so you find the result somewhere close to what you have and come to conclusion. I just looked at the video and it seems I did not leave such important detail. But your project you always look at Power (watt). The module has 125C junction temperature when you touch it perhaps at 80 or 90 degress C at outside you should be okay. I can't understand this from here. So test it for 24 hours in a safe place away from living room on a concrete away from everything and if it dies, you know it is bad, else you might come to conclusion that it can be trusted. Do your own test.

If i connect 12v 5amps can i get 5v output? How many amps at output?
@robojax
@robojax 3 жыл бұрын
if efficiency is 100%, then Pin=Pout. P is power P=IV, I is current in Ampere. V is voltage. So input P is P=IV=12(5)=60W and if you want 5V output then I=P÷V=60÷5=12 so you can get 12A. but you can't find 100% efficient module. you will lose 10 to 20% energy as heat. Now with this module, you have to see how much current this can handle. it is rated at maximum of 3A. I don't remember. so you gotta watch it to see.

D1 Is not a zener diode, 1N5824 would be a Schottky Diode, why would you need a zener on the output of a regulator? Its the flyback diode for the Inductor so it doesn't blow up your Regulator when you disconnect the load. DO NOT put a zener in its place. Also in the data sheet you can use it as an inverting regulator to generate negative voltage with a common ground.

How much input current require to give 3A output
@robojax
@robojax 5 жыл бұрын
I did not provide it but I have noticed that these converters have about 90% efficiency which is 10% loss. So they need 10% extra power at input. for 9V and 3A output 9V x3A=27W, add 10% to it would be 1.1x27 =29.7W. Now if you need to get this power from 12V input, then 29.7W÷12V =2.48A at input.
