DC already has a kickass alternate universe with World's Finest. I don't like Waid as a person, but he's still one of the best writers out there, and his World's Finest is more "DC Comics," than the mainline titles are. But, then again, if they did choose to expand World's Finest into an "Ultimate-like line," they'd just find away to screw it up. Like I'm sure they will with Snyder's.

I’m kinda worn out on big 2 continuity these days. It does feel like they don’t know what to do with the characters anymore. So the Ultimate universe has been refreshing. Hopefully absolute is good but I feel like every new initiative DC attempts falls on its face cause they can’t keep it going.

IMO a lot of this change is to get in front of the pending loss of the current copyright of some of the Superman mythos. I’m sure one of your other listeners can give the correct information, but as long as you change the character by a certain % then it’s not considered the original character. What DC will do is make the character familiar enough to *evoke* the original character, but different enough to make it a new character where they don’t have to pay, the Siegel and Schuster estate royalties, protect as much of the original IP as they can, and of course, secure a new copyright.

Honestly we don't need this The reason why I'm saying that is because DC already have several ultimate universe style universes that they could easily expand upon the earth wanted they have and they already had a recent kind of ultimate version with new 52 Earth 2 run which honestly I said the new 52 should have just been that and still kept regular DC universe because what needs to happen is you need to go back to basics with DC comics and yeah you can have an alternate universe but you need the main continuity to get back to what it is if I was Scott Snyder and them I'll just focus on the new 52 Earth 2 universe the one that has the black Superman val zod and all of those characters in that universe and expand upon that That would be better than whatever they're trying to do now.

The big twist on Superman has already been done to death by others. Characters like Supreme, Hyperion, Miracle Man, Mark Waid's Irredeemable, and others have all explored that to the point that it's gotten pretty old. I guess it has completely escaped their attention that the only "Ultimate" book that had long-term success was Spider-Man and that was pretty faithful to the core concepts of Spider-Man but gave it a fresh start so people didn't need to know all the continuity. What-if stories where you have some gimmicky twist are generally good for one story, if that.

I mean it can work, original Ultimate did for a while and new Ultimate is at least selling at the start. Where I see a huge problem for DC is that they do it all the time. Even for somebody like me that’s only reading DC occasionally, it’s pretty obvious that DC reboots, redesigns, recreates and redefines its universe all the time. And it always ends with DC needing to do it again all over. For somebody like me, an occasional DC reader, something like a DC continuity doesn’t even exist. So my expectation for Absolute is just „more mess to add to the already messy DC“.

This new Absolute Universe might have potential. I'll wait for 5 or 6 years and see how it develops. These days one can't trust the outcome anymore. Scott Snyder might be able to do something great, he knows how writing works probably more than the entirety of the current mainstream. As an example for potential changes with Bruce not being bound to money, I'd still have him discover assets of the family after the parents are gone, maybe Alfred is a stranger but worked maybe for the family in some way. The mystery could be why the parents were in fact very wealthy but chose to act as if they weren't. Apart from the What Ifs, there is one thing that has to be carefully handled: Editors. If the editors are the same as in the current mainline, it will quickly go downhill. The writers and illustrators can be as good as they possibly could, if editors will intervene and change the final product according to their vision, as it happens in DC and Marvel, none of it will matter in the near future. I wish the Absolute team success though.

For really good Jason Aaron writing, I think you have to look at his non-superhero stuff. Scalped was the Breaking Bad of comics and no one was reading it but me (joking, obviously). It was excellent and had chef's-kiss artwork by R.M. Guerra, the ending's a little muddled, but overall a great title. He started and then unfortunately abandoned a fantastic title called Southern Bastards, which you think is going to be Walking Tall -- until it isn't. In both of these titles, Aaron shows his strength by getting you to sympathize with and care about horrible people by showing, not telling, what makes them that way. And not with that run-of-the-mill "I was beaten as a child" cheap type sympathy, either. And another little gem of his is a mini-series called The Other Side which is about the stories of a soldier on each side of the Vietnam War running concurrently until the two characters meet on the battlefield. I'm not doing it justice with this summary, but it's definitely worth a read, and the art by Cameron Stewart is actually pretty good.

Wayne without the wealth is redundant given that that's the story in the main line. Granted, in the main continuity he's now a millionaire instead of a billionaire but, still. It all works out to a greater focus on his resourcefulness so, what's the difference? A truly alien Superman would be intriguing if the writers had the imagination to conceive of such a thing...but they don't. Kryptonian culture will be some lefty shit (on Krypton we all declare our pronouns etc). Wonder woman will be the usual man hating schtick. I have never been very good on focusing on comic creators. Except Jeremy Adams because he makes his comics fun to read and it seems like he’s getting better at writing. As time goes on. So for me on comic creators are just a mystery for me. Artists don’t matter as much because I love art in general so… they sort of become one of many in my mind. I’m not a fan of the trinity. I respect them but I don’t enjoy them as much as others. Batman is just over used to the point of… I really don’t want anything to do with him. So basically there comics don’t matter as much to me as it does others and the ideas for there comics don’t matter either. The only thing I really want is Raven in Justice League Dark. That’s it really… so… we’ll see.

When it comes to DC finally having their own "Ultimate Universe" I'll believe it when I see it actually flourishing. Like, actually releasing books on time at the very least. Once, I wouldn't have minded a "broke Bruce Wayne" story but nowadays how people seem to find Bruce being both rich, white, and male deeply problematic I'm not as open as I was before. The "less ties to humanity" Superman sounds like the hardest sell as we had those stories flop before but Kara already had that angle and one of the traits that swt her apart from Clark. Lara Craft Wonder Woman? Eh we will see. I think Diana most of the three could benefit from an "Ultimate Universe" reboot given how clueless DC tends to be with what to do with her and her supporting cast in the main universe. Kinda like Black Panther, they're characters with a lot of history and potential but again their companies seem unsure what to do with them. I actually didnt mine her New 52 run except for the huge origin retcon which wouldve probably gone over better if it was a separate universe alongside the main one with her original origin. Speaking of New 52, while I think that reboot ended up doing more harm than good to DC, especially certain franchises, it would have been better received if it was it's own universe.

A Wonder Woman pitch where a chaos god bestows human artifacts imbued with magical power, causing chaos in the world of man. Okay, I'm interested; let's see where this goes. A Superman without his humanity just seems like you want to have an evil Superman but not fully commit to the concept. You've tried killing Batman or making him disappear before, and it almost always fails, with Bruce inevitably returning. Considering Scott's history and how easily liberal white women can bully him, I wouldn't be surprised if one of the Stephanies, Tinis, or any other poorly regarded writer in comics is penning a book in this line in six months.

DC is truly aimless and is trying too hard to try to be someone else such at trying to copy the success of Marvel instead of competing in their own lane cause they're creatively bankrupt to the point where they lack the creativity to forge their own individual identity seperate from Marvel and other trends popular atm tldr; it's as if DC is currently being ran by trend followers instead of trend setters
