DC Essentials Superman Action Figure Review

After hunting for a year or so, I finally was able to find this figure at the local flea market for $20!

I just wish we could get more hands with this figure but this looks like one of the better Superman figures out there. It’s definitely going to be up there when deciding which Supes figure to get for my shelf.

Love this figure. Probably my favorite highly-articulated Superman too. Great sculpt. Really digging this line overall. The lack of painted belt loops is really the only bummer for me.

Love the review. Amazing in terms of articulation and body sculpt, but I think still far from what I suppose I would call "my classic superman", and the scale wouldn't fit in with the rest of my stuff anyway. I personally would love to see a superman that has all this articulation, a few pairs of hands, and a John Byrne style open mouth smile, dimples and all, as an alternate head.

This is the first Superman figure I’ve seen in a long time that I really want to get my hands on... Most of the others, I just haven’t cared for their head sculpts. This one, overall, looks leaps and bounds better than a majority of them.

This might be the best figure of this line so far. The lack of red paint for the belt loops is probably the most glaring problem here for me. Also would have been nice to have an accessory, be it alternate hands, a chunk of kryptonite, etc, but really, I can live without it. A great looking figure.

Got mine yesterday...ya know this figure was nearly 30 bucks and for that kind of money more could've been done to this figure ....the arm cuffs should have been painted a metallic blue the belt buckle should have been gold...the belt loops should have been painted...and a stand should have been added they even to cheap to add a second pair of hands...and thats a given...great reveiw i just love the humor you inject in your videos

Hey Brad, love this figure. The scale, sculpt, articulation etc look great. I wouldn't call it the best classic Superman figure ever but it ranks really high only imo. Definitely a must get figure, I already have it on PO 😁 And lovely review as usual 👍🏻

Great review. Honest, with figure comparisons, not afraid to criticize and high res. I think Superman's head is as Faboky as the DC Direct DC Universe Superman was supposedly George Perezy....I just don't see it :)

I think if you’re looking for the perfect Superman figure, you’ll be waiting a very long time. Maybe when Halley’s Comet returns. What I do is collect maybe 3 or 4 Superman’s that I like the most and then kind of amalga-smash them together in my head. The amalga-smashed one then becomes the most definitive for me.

I made that Krypto too. He's a Dalmatian painted white the cape is vacuformed. The coller is actually paper with an S on the clasp.

Hi, Brad, i´m eager to get this figure, for me it´s almost perfect comic representation in action figure, except for the loops not painted in red, but anyway at least the best, and the articulation seems great to flying poses, i hope this line will has long live and bring us all DC Comics heroes and villains.

I agree. Besides a little touch up- Ya add A cloth cape, paint his upper thighs bronze age blue & the belt loops. Than your set! I can't name 2 other Superman figs that would look better after the touch ups....

i usually avoid figures in this price range, while having a larger price tag I find Mezco one 12 and Medicom far more satisfying, they also actually deserve being placed in cases and put on display.

Brad the Universe It's really a nice figure and the paint and sculpt are perfect. But I wish that the figure could be at least 6 inch like the DC Icons. And the biggest con is at least should include an another fist and flight hand thing. Maybe a DC Essentials parts with an additional fist/holding/gripping effect.

It's OK yet still far from a definitive version of Supes. I think the best is the one that we might never see released in the Alien two pack by NECA

Juan Miguel Arasa I’m still wishing that was released too though I’d argue it’s not definitive. That’s more the eye of the beholder. For me a definitive Supes doesn’t wear the darker blue that NECA designed. I’d end up repainting him. For others it’s perfect. I agree I’m feeling that it would likely be the best Superman figure ever though.

As always, great review ! Thank you for informing us about the belt. I did not notice it before in any of the videos and pictures that I saw online. I was a little disappointed about the missing Superman symbol on the cape. My selling point was the head sculpt, and I also like the articulation and the colors. I agree with you that it might be the best articulated Superman figure that we have. Recently, I ordered 3. I have a Christopher Reeves head sculpt and/a custom painted Mezco Classic Superman haed that I would like to use for the 2 extra Superman figures that I ordered, or I might use a custom painted Black Lantern Superman head sculpt ( It looks like Superboy) for one of the extra Superman figures. I can't wait to get those figures ! I was anxiously waiting for the Superman figure in one of my favorites online sellers. By the way, If the figure is big enough for the custom Mezco Classic Superman head sculpt, I have another custom painted Mezco head that would need a body, so I might buy another one. Changing the subject, in one of your videos , you mentioned that you were thinking about doing a Fortress of Solitude. Have you had any ideas or have you changed your mind ?

I'd really love to do a cape swap with that JLA Box Set Superman directly to the left, with the more symmetrical S symbol. I have the single carded one and can only find those. That set is IMPOSSIBLE to find!

I definitely agree with you here. It would almost be perfect if they had the belt painted right and the symbol on the back of the cape. IWhat do you think about the neck? Seems a little thin to me. I really like the articulation points though.

@@Rock_Draw I disagree. Many figures have arms that our way to short (many Marvel legends). An the over-rated/ over priced Mezco Garbage usually has legs that our way to short & nobody ever mentions that!

I like the smaller S-shield on the chest, But they got the spit curl back word on his forehead it should make a S. And the belt loops on the trunks are not painted, and no yellow S-shield on the cape.

I really wish they would've made the chest a bit wider, torso a tiny bit longer and a bigger cape.just swapping the cape is enough to make him come across as greatly improved. The cape on their batman release is also extremely uninspired and disappointing with a swap making a huge difference. Can't wait for the classic batman they have coming. Oh and the cyborg superman is an amazing figure from the line, especially since they skimp out on sculpted details with every release. It's refreshing to get a figure that isn't just a bunch of questionable painted on details.

My thoughts. I only own one other Superman figure and it got it during the 90's. Almost no articulation beyond moving the arms and legs up and down. I loved that figure. One of the few good things from my childhood. This guy I really like a as well. There are much better Superman figures...........that like $60 or far more. I purchased this guy for $24. For it's price I feel it does a lot in comparison to the other toys in it's form factor. There are going to be trade offs for a mass produced item. I do think there are things they could have done. Personally I would have liked to see additional hands. What if I wanted a Superman to two fists or two open hands? Quality Control is of course an issue. Your Supes has some irregular paint lines but mine doesn't. My supes though has a drop of blue paint on his hand and there's a dent on the chest. Also mine has a scar on one side. I kinda dig the scar. I think it's clear that people are going to have different things to say and it would be fair if each figure is......unique. I will be painting mine for some corrections. It seems like if you just want to own a few figures, this is probably okay enough. Otherwise spend the money on a better figure. I'd also say really try to see these guys in person.

It's a pretty good figure but something about it is still off to me. I was more wowed by the DCSH Superman. Something about the pucker lips, slim shoulders, narrow hips and strange way the cape is sculpted on the back throws me off. Pretty cool that his head can finally be put in a flying pose though.

Looks pretty rough. No S on the cape, the belt is solid colored, and all it has to really set it apart from any other Superman figure is the little wrist cuffs. My favorite Superman was the Byrne one that came in the DC Direct Superman four pack back in the day. I know a lot of people liked the DC Direct 2003 version, but at least with mine he was very brittle, wrist broke at minor bending. I'll give it this, the head sculpt is great, that was a weak point of the Byrne figure, but the rest is too disappointing to justify the $28 price tag.

WOW, I was expecting you to really hone in on the flaws. I agree, articulation wise and at this size, he is superb. However, the paint detail, the flaws in the initial design, ie. no painted belt loops, no "S" on the back, brings it way down. Speaking of paint flaws, mine came with a tiny dot of red paint on the back of his neck. Yep, my Supes has a zit on his back. Thanks DC quality control. Love the head sculpt, but do to DC's cost cutting decisions, using the same buck as all they other Essential figures, means Supes is lacking his classic V-shaped upper torso. Why, DC, why?

Great review, but why not point out the crazy space where legs attach to the body? That's what I'd expect from a dollar store toy, not this! All Essential figures seem to suffer from this, but no one is calling this out in any reviews. Classics look best from that perspective. I get that it makes articulation better, but the current look is ridiculous and keeping me from diving in.

I started out with a lot of excitement for the DC Essentials line but after I got the Flash, Reverse Flash, and Batman figures I decided to cancel everyone except Superman (favorite character) and Brainiac. I just got the Superman and Brainiac in the mail yesterday and I am kind of disappointed in a similar fashion as I was with the first three figures of the line. For the price point, they are far too basic. No accessories, bare minimum sculpted details, worse articulation than on the Icons line, sloppy paint, and some QC issues on my Brainiac. As a lifelong DC fan, I find it super exhausting having figure line after figure line disappoint. I wish Icons had stuck around. Now I'm just crossing my fingers that the improvements on the DC Multiverse line will hold and I can finally settle in on a line to collect long term.

Personally speaking, I dropped my "hope" on a all-quality classical Superman figure long time ago, if it has great sculpt and paint - bad articulation, if it has great articulation-bad sculpting or paint app. This is why as of this moment in sticking to the DCEU Superman instead. Ironically Superman is a super A list character just like Marvel's flagship Spider-Man, yet look how many Spider-Man figures have been continuously produced to satisfy fan's hunger. My hope in humanity has fallen short 😢

That’s something I would have liked to see. In the end nobody has made one I’m %100 happy with. DC Direct could have done it long ago but they dropped the ball by cutting down the torso by one layer of abs on the 21 point Supes. The Justice League America box set in 80s deco almost does it for me but the body proportions are just too odd for me. The good thing about this one is that it’s easily customized to have a new better cape and those painted belt loops.

DC Collectibles shouldn't have followed Bendis's idiotic and nostalgic whim. Classic Superman has been done to death. This is just another version - and a very poor one at that. They should have kept the release of this figure with the original, Reborn Costume, design. It is a great look for Superman. My favourite look for him, if you ask me. It picks the best from the classic and New 52 Superman costumes, while dropping the worst in both (namely, the trousers with belt loops, and the high collar, the angular logo and heavy piping lines respectively) At least they should have launched both. And then the fans would decide which is best.

So let's see, Flash and Zoom look taller, which is never a good thing. Supes needs more meat on his bones, the figure is 30 dollars with no accessories and I'm sorry, I've gotten used to not seeing the red trunks and realized that it belongs to a bygone era and had overstayed its welcome...Regardless of what Brian M. Bendis says or does. So no, I don't think this figure is as fantastic as you presented it.
