Having owned both, there’s something special about the M3, for a Sunday drive etc, but for a Saturday night blast, nothing beats a dc5 on full chat, I’ve owned 600bhp F10 m5’s, which wasn’t near as fun as a dc5 on a windy road.

@@bharatmodi6712 my fn2 has h&r coilovers with racing springs and camber plate, 330x32 6 piston brakes, k24 with 250hp 270nm and cusco plated lsd.. so nothing boring or near stock😅btw the car in stock form is miles better than its precessor and enjoyable than the fk2

At two different points in my life I had an opportunity to purchase both of these cars and chose to buy something else.. test drive a built Acura RSX type S insanely fast car well modded. Instead purchased a 06 GTO spice red metallic. And years later an E46 With SMG transmission was having problems got towed back on the test drive purchased a Lincoln mkz found out end of the week another customer had test drive it and removed a fuse that caused the SMG to have some fault so that no one would purchase it before he could come back with the money wish I would have still purchased that BMW though I absolutely love that car

3:30 This is a common symptom of a worn steering coupler in the steering column. Causes play on center and weird feel. Mine has no on center play whatsoever with the original rack. People don't talk about it feeling numb because that isn't normal.

I have an e92 M3, and I’d love a DC5 as a secondary track car. M3’s are great luxury road cars, and street spec is enough to enjoy the ITB’s and analog bits. DC5 has comparable revs and the chassis is decently lighter, and I’d rather break parts with that on track than an M.

If you want a less refined, less comfortable, noisier(in a good way) , more connected, more raw, more thrilling driving experience step back in time slightly to the DC2 Type R, preferably a JDM version. The dc5 lost a lot when the bean counters forced a switch from double wishbones to Mcpherson struts. As a car to tune for racing, the DC2 wins hands down.

DC5 is double wishbone, as are EP3 type r civics. Everyone does seem to complain about the DC5 feeling a bit bland though and DC2 is top dog. Last I heard, prices were already terrible so I'm not sure it's even worth considering. You could build a monster DC5 for the cost of a stock dc2 and you'd be starting with the killer K20. DC2 is a tough sell these days...

The DC5 has Macpherson struts in the front and trailing arm type suspension in the rear and hence do not handle as good as a DC2 Type R, which has double wishbones front and rear. Edit to add....EP3 Type R has Front toe control link strut and rear double wishbones.

@@papapetad I've raced in a Honda Series for many years. The DC5 guys really struggle to get the handling up to level of the DC2 cars. The go to winning spec is K24 DC2 which is what I had eventually after B18CR, K20a. All factory motors as per Series regs.

@@shootingbrake I appreciate them both for different purposes really. E46 is a great all rounder but needs some choice mods to really up the engagement. They're also money pits, I had all the common problems with mine and it really starts to detract from the ownership experience. I've had the DC5 engine/gearbox in my 1990 Civic track car for 7 years now and it's never missed a beat revving to 9k constantly. The gap in quality of engineering is pretty big here

Curveball to this selection: E85 Z4M and £5k to perfect it. That’s essentially what I’ve done, I love the S54 but hate that all 46s are pricey now and are 70% dogs. I paid £11k for my Roadster, £2k on making it mechanically perfect and the preventative jobs done. Another £3k on mods: carbon intake, Supersprint, 4.10 rebuilt diff, Bilstein B8, lighter wheels and sticky rubber. It’s genuinely the most fun car I’ve owned and at 200kgs lighter than the 46 but stiffer (the Roadster is stiffer than the 46 Coupe, the Z4M Coupe is TWICE as stiff), with the quicker rack and brakes from the CSL - it’s a matter of time before the cheaper ones get snapped up imo. Not mine though, it’s a bit tatty and has 160k on it… 😂 It’s mechanically perfect and drives as an M Car should though!

I have both the E46 M3 and E85 Z4M Roadster and the M3 is the more complete package out of the box. No doubt the E85 Z4M offers the better value at this moment in time as they are so cheap it's almost criminal.

both great drivers cars but id argue you have 80-90% of the actual fun for less money in the dc5. the maintenance of that m3 can get out of hand quickly. rod bearings for example.... in my country at least, the prices for good e46 m3 are way above a dc5.

Re the steering on the E46, have you looked into replacing the rubber coupling bush in the steering column with a solid alloy one? It makes a big difference.

Every gripe you had with the e46 steering is completely eradicated by swapping in a yellow tag steering rack. That being said mine is purple tag standard (it’s a non m) and having driven plenty of drifferent cars with performance in mind, there’s very few cars that have had better steering in my experience. One of the negatives also of going wider wheels up front for a square setup is that you lose some of that pointy steering. Wider heavier wheels up front only increase the understeer engineered into factory setup. The square setup can only be truly utilised when driving near the limit which is unrealistic unless it’s a dedicated track car. That being said they’re a phenomenal car and it’s a shame you moved on from the e46 platform. Suspension tuning also makes a huge difference, which in fairness you’ve done. From my personal experience of driving both cars is that the DC5 is a sensational car, but the E46 is more useable. Fantastic video

Thanks for the informative comment! Square setup definitely needs many supporting mods to work, and suits an aggressive setup + driving style. Yellow tag rack is indeed the sweet spot but unfortunately the UK and Europe didn't receive the 'ZCP' 330ci meaning they are thin on the ground. The commonly available E46 quick racks do not have the additional weighting that the M cars have meaning you swap feel for speed, which wasn't a compromise I was happy with. E46 is a fantastic platform. I also really love the F8X platform and it works well for my needs - will do a video on the M4 soon to explain why.

The DC5 Integra and E46 M3 are worth similar money on the UK's second hand market meaning they now often cross shopped against each other. While the DC5 is down on cylinders, the lack of weight and shorter gearing means the performance can be comparable in the real world.

I'm a serial BMW owner, and although I do like the E46 M3, I never really 'loved' it. I actually preferred the earlier E36 M3. The DC5 is a capable machine, but lacks any character or soul for me, and although it might be faster around a track than the M3, it's lacking in so many other areas as an actual road car.
