I remember when DCI first allowed trombones on the field, so many corps used it for just cool gimmicks or jazz solos but man... the way SCV did this opener was magical. I remember going to the rose bowl show and having my face just blown off from the trombones' directional sound

Why does what the corps wear ruin a show for you? I'm kinda curious

⁠@@chromathederg Corp identity and tradition. For the last 20, some corps 30 years, you could tell at a glance what corp you were watching by uniform, the way they marched and sometimes signature visuals. If you went to a show now without knowledge of the current season, you wouldn’t be able to tell who’s on the field until the corp is announced. They’re all the same now.

I’m just a drummer so I’m not sure: is there really a huge sound difference between a baritone and a trombone? Are corps just using them now to be trendy?

Yes, there is a significant timbre difference and also because the trombone has a slide obviously there's lots of stuff you can do with a trombone you can't with a valved instrument like glissandos and other things. Because of the slide though it's not practical to march it in most settings in drum corps all the time.

Depends on what you mean by "baritone". A true baritone horn (I'm talking like 19th Century baritone horn) might be acoustically the same as a *valve* trombone in terms of bore and taper and all that. A valve trombone will sound approximately like a slide trombone in most hands. However, "baritone" today has become conflated with "euphonium" and it is rare to see a true "baritone" horn outside of traditional British brass bands and Civil War re-enactors. An actual euphonium has a much mellower sound than than a trombone. Of course, in the hands of poor players they can sound pretty much the same.
