Unless Garmin pivots and joins an ecosystem, their watches will eventually be the biggest fish in the tiniest niche sea. If their business model can cope with that, then cool. Hi! Thanks again for your really excellent work. Please forgive me for pointing out, that mixing a subjective measure like an RPE with an objective measure of training load is nonsensical from a methodological standpoint. From my point of view, introducing a purely subjective measurement as a separate line which you can correlate with objective data would be more helpful. But each to their own. Looking forward to more stuff from you. Cheers!
@Dcrainmaker2 ай бұрын
Thanks! While I generally prefer an objective measure, the reality is that all watches today that use an objective measure are only measuring at best half of the load (aerobic only, versus muscular). Check out the study I linked above, which outlines how well the subjective measurements work. (www.frontiersin.org/journals/neuroscience/articles/10.3389/fnins.2017.00612/full)

However- due to its limitations- (www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC11164849/pdf/40798_2024_Article_729.pdf), looking at it separately seems to me more promising. As a means of objectifying work during a long low aerobic exercise-such as a hike- I could imagine measuring work (ok.. it's difficult for outdoor pedestrians activities ) over time factoring in total weight and elevation gain. In the end, you would be able to measure calories spent... which could be interesting... have a great day!

I definitely agree that I’d like to be able to alter effort scores on my Garmin. My example would be some of the yoga classes I do. On one hand they rarely get my heart above what Garmin considers to be inactive and yet after a 60 minute class I can be completely exhausted for apparently no training load and 0 hours recovery time. At the same time, it will have recorded a high stress score so it knows I wasn’t just chilling out for an hour.

Couple things: I don’t want the graph numbers personally, I find that overwhelming. If they could show them only when you tap and hold on the graph for a day that could work. Second, I really wish Apple would allow the Action Button to have two purposes: 1) a “default” that you choose, like we have now 2) the option to enable contextual functions which would depend on the app. pause workouts, start the stopwatch, whatever when you’re in each of those apps, but then turn on the flashlight when you’re on the watch face.

Question: does training load take into account activities recorded not using an Apple Watch? For example, if I record a bike ride on my Wahoo Roam, and the data from this then gets shared with the Apple Fitness and Health apps, can an effort score by applied either automatically or manually to allow this activity to contribute to training load? Or, does an activity have to be recorded on the Watch to count? This is my biggest frustration/consideration I'm having at the moment for purchasing a new watch. Garmin allows you to import activities recorded on other devices (like my Wahoo), but that activity just sits in the Garmin Connect app doing nothing, as for some reason Garmin won't allow the data from the third party activity to contribute towards body battery, HRV, etc.

I also don’t want to have to press the home or multitask button, swipe around to find Spotify… tap tap swipe swipe, while I’m running? No thanks, on garmin I simply: hold the music button, and can then easily navigate with buttons that I can activate from muscle memory without looking. 3)Heart-rate broadcasting: setting my mom up on a kickr core with Zwift was easy, until I had to go deep deep in Apple settings to the settings to allow workout device access. Then, we have to leave wife companion on iPhone open, zwift companion on the Apple Watch open and connect to zwift on Apple TV to get heart rate. Multiple times throughout the ride the heart rate stopped transmitting and the companion apps had to be force closed and re-opened on iPhone and Apple Watch.
