Flight Sim nut going back to FS 1.0. The minute I tried DCS (or any other sim) with VR; there's just no turning back. I instantly became a better shot in IL-2 / DCS p51/Saber and yes, the bombing was so much more precise. I found that twisting and turning in my chair to look back has added a level of 'pseudo-fidelity' you just can't get with Track IR. Be careful! I use the HP Reverb G2 and the depth perception and immersion is fantastic. I started out with TrackIR, and its very different using VR. Ive found that manipulating systems etc is faster with TrackIR, especially since you dont have to move your head 1 to 1. But the realism with VR is incredible. The HP is the best bang for the buck at $550. Some VR will easily set you back $2 grand! I cant justify having the best at 4 times the price.

Totally agree! I got Quest 2 last month, and my pc is pretty old, i7-4770K and RTX2060. Although I couldn't get my graphic as crisp as non-VR, but holy crap, just sitting in the F16's cockpit with VR was amazing, aircraft feels so huge, first time joined a public dog fight lobby with VR on I almost broken my freaking neck, first circle after the merge was especially hard, I had to twist my shoulder to find the target, but once the target is in the HUD, it was really easy to track them, because everything is huge in the VR, gunshot was easy, you got a bigger target and bigger gun sight, plus you can feel the distance. I also tried some WW2 birds, aiming indeed was much easier. Not even mention air-to-air refueling, boom, you are in the basket. Helicopters are the biggest, they are HUGE, Mi-8 feels like sitting in a bus. For me, landing feels a lot faster in VR, took me some time to get used to, plus, no need for meatball indicator on the screen if you are landing in the supercarrier, you can see the meatball super clear. However, if you do not have a super powerful PC, you need to spend a lot of time researching and tweaking the graphic setting for the VR, there is no official 'how to make your DCS looks great in VR' manual, I spent a lot of time trying different setting and finally found the one that suits for my PC. You WILL compromise some graphic effects in VR, but the immersion that VR gives you is beyond amazing.

That game can be downloaded on the Rift software nowadays for free to get an impression of how it was, it even has a FOV limit option so it looks like having an old HMD on.

Having made the transition from TrackIR to VR, I doubt I'll ever be able to go back. The general sense of "being there", plus what GS mentioned about it being much easier to do things like formation flying, make the VR experience demonstrably superior in my opinion. TrackIR just never worked quite right. I'm sure that user error played a role in my dissatisfaction overall, but I was never able to tweak it to the point where it would work without occasionally doing annoying shit like spazzing and wrecking my POV. The headset solved that particular problem, but it comes with it's own unique shortcomings. For example, I can't really use any of the FC3 aircraft anymore due to not being able to see the keyboard. My other major gripe is just how poor the graphical performance is. The spotting in DCS, which wasn't the greatest at the best of times, has been made absolutely terrible with the headset. I've heard that ED is working on a massive overhaul of the DCS engine in order to take advantage of things like multi-core CPUs and, perhaps, ease the burden on PCs using VR. I hope that's true, because right now the experience, while good, can be markedly improved upon, and it could help to offset one of the key drawbacks that's keeping people away.

VR is really good right now with the Reverb G2 and Valve Index headsets, but I think 2 years from now they are gonna make the jump to standardized 8k+ goggles. There are dev kits that you can get right now for like $5000 which is insane but its a preview of the tech and shows its coming. DCS with that king of resolution will be the crazy, and in two years 3070 level GPU's will be much more readily available. Hopefully the Vulcan API that ED is introducing will help with performance, but eventually VR is gonna be the standard.

@evolicious
@evolicious 2 жыл бұрын
Definitely not. Processing hardware can't handle that kind of data stream and neither can any cable, port, or game engine. 90fps is a bare minimum for VR, and the best data stream (HDMI 2.1 and DP1.4) can handle up to 8k 60fps. Also, pixel count means nothing when it comes to clarity in VR. What matters most is pixel density and pixels per degree. You can get a 1080p display with no SDE and has just as much clarity as 8k just with advanced lens systems and the right display tech.

Its very important to note how acclimation works. You need to take the HMD off, AS SOON as you begin to feel uncomfortable. Powering through the discomfort allows your subconscious to associate VR with that discomfort and you could end up feeling nauseous just at the thought of VR. But you must come back to VR once you feel better, because the acclimation can wear off, even for people that play a lot of VR.

Yep VR is DCS or any driving or flying sim is awesome and something everyone should try at least once. I also use a Rift S and it will work with reasonably modest hardware, I do not really have a huge amount of space so I run VR using a laptop It was running on a Asus G17 with a 115w RTX2060 pretty well but now I have upgraded to a Alienware M17 R4 with a 140w RTX 3070 I can push the settings and pixel density up a bit and have a more consistent experience. It is the sense of scale you get in VR that I love, turn your head look back at your wings and you realize what A massive bit of equipment you are sat in, or how cramped some cockpits can be, something that will never come across on a flat screen. My first VR sim experience was on project cars 2 and seriously on the first few try's you will be trying to adjust stuff on the dash like the air vents and the radio with your hand It will be the same in a DCS cockpit. I also feel like I can be more accurate getting a racing line driving, or lining up a kill shot or landing in DCS because you can judge distance so much easier. I can not go back to a flat screen on sim games now.

@2:55 Is why I can't go back to TrackIR. I just can't. That muscle memory you were talking about happens to me except in the opposite, I can't fly for shit on TrackIR unless I fly with it for a while. 3 wire traps that are consistent for me in VR become 1 wire shit shows in TrackIR, same with formation. It's so much more enjoyable and immersive to fly formation and tank in VR. You definitely are at a disadvantage in dog fighting because of head and neck strain, as well as (at least for me) constantly losing the bandit. If I look away and back, they're gone, even when utilizing VR zoom (which helps but only so much). Hopefully, the resolution quality has a huge leap forward, or HMD's become so light that we can move the screens further away from the eyes.

I'm really glad you get to experience that without any motion sickness or temporal aliasing issues. It sounds *amazing*! The sad part for me is I know I'm super sensitive to motion continuity: *TL;DR:* When I finally upgraded from my 120Hz CRT, that I believed was causing my migraines, I decided to do all the research I could to figure this out once and for all. Numerous neurological exams and 2 MRIs later, and all the doctors just kept telling me that there is no physiological problem, which basically means they think I'm just crazy. So I realized there's no way I can fix myself medically (I also did go for further followup tests to rule out mechanical issues with my eyesight and potential psychological factors that could contribute to something like this but those paths of investigation lead nowhere either.) and that is when I started looking for engineering solutions. I finally realized that even looking at a rock solid 100fps on a 100Hz 2d screen, for more than 30mins or so, *reliably* makes me feel so sick that I literally feel like I want to die (unfortunately that does also apply to 24-30fps video and movies, unless the optical flow based motion interpolation I use is able to recover enough unaliased motion vectors to make at least the gross movements continuous and 'smooth' enough). Yes the 'sick' feeling does come with the usual nausea/vertigo, but the worst part is the extreme migraines and light sensitivity that I have for the rest of the day. Luckily I was able to test different monitors all the way up to the maximum back then of 144Hz, which finally brought multi-hour gameplay into comfortable reach for me. Already knowing that the absolute minimum for me to even start perceiving the illusion of motion is around 120fps (I mean to just be able to sub-consciously have my vision follow a smooth pursuit curve when tracking a steadily moving target along in a straight line and not having my eyes jump back and forth between the predicted next frame position and the currently visible frame. Even at a locked 144fps, playing offline on my own PC with a 1000Hz CounterStrike server testbed, the perceived motion isn't 'smooth' or continuous by any means: it's still really easy to tell I'm seeing individual frames jumping almost instantly from one to the next. It just allows me to play for a couple of hours without feeling like I want to rip my eyes out and dig into my brain to pull the migraine out. */Tl;DR* Now for the frustrating part. I not only invested into a valve index as that was the only headset that could even remotely venture into the 120+ fps territory (and no, just to be extremely clear, getting 60 fps in VR does *NOT* mean you experience it like 120fps on a 2D monitor because "the headset displays 2 different frames during each frame interval". Even if your headset does display frames sequentially, flipping between eyes, it would still draw those 2 different perspectives with object data from the *SAME* physics update tick in the game engine. The game doesn't advance for half a frametime step and then recalculate all the new updated object positions to display the most up to date position information to each eye; that's just not how most games, DCS included, handles VR.), I also really did my best to avoid bottlenecks by investing in the most overclockable RTX3090 that I could find (EVGA Kingpin Hydro-copper edition, for what that's worth), with an AMD 5950x powering it all (not because I want the extra threads, I know DCS doesn't really use them. Rather I thought that since they probably need to reserve their best consumer grade silicon for that SKU, that I would therefore have the best chance of getting the highest possible stable OC on chilled water, together with the best performance per clock per thread, if I disabled SMT to reduce the chance of cache/resource contention and also only enabled the 4 best cores on each CCD.) That ended up giving me a stable OC of 4.9GHz 'base' clock speed, while still keeping a 5.1GHz OC on the 2 best cores under lighter workloads, with the added benefit of being able to run the memory at 4000Mt/s in 1:1 mode with the IMC at 2000MHz. And yet, even after all of that, after also completely stripping down Win10 Pro and tweaking its CPU governor to keep the CPU at maximum active readiness, with it now constantly, comfortably pulling >200W only on the EPS12V rail at idle on the desktop, and further disabling all power saving 'features" and 'sleep states' and also running a fixed voltage and frequency on the GPU (all of which together actually got microstutter under control and brought

To overcome VR sickness you need to correctly set your IPD (don't buy Rift S or others with mechanically fixed IPD if yours is less than 60mm or more than 65mm), start slow, some time in oculus home or steam home or similar. The moment you start getting sick, take off the headset and rest until fully recovered. It may take 30 min or all day to recover. Introduce some light straight line flying next. Don't try to push through sickness ever, it will only slow your progress in the long term. Rally is the absolute hardest, only attempt it when you don't get sick in other VR environments anymore. Also, don't eat stuff that upset your stomach. Weed also helps like with any other feeling of sickness.

Everything good till "ED make sure it's optimaze". NOP and NOP at all. ED and VR are a headache . Every update will mess it up. Anyway. Since I tried vr , impossible for me to fly at 2D . The feelback is so imprtant that it improve you fly by 60%. Sadly vr headset + ED issues with vr , it's a nightmare sometimes.

Long story short: It's great that DCS works in VR, but there's lots to fix and optimize still :) - could be worse though.

Thanks for the video, I personally couldn't go back to non vr, I just feel like I'm missing out on too much if I do, also have you tried playing without the faceplate on the rift s, I found it much nicer for anything longer than 10 mins

I am used to piloting a spaceship in VR with completely different rules for dogfighting. But I'd like to play DCS because it seems learning to dogfight in an atmosphere with gravity and all the quirks of that would be fun too. Plus, the scenery is beautiful.

I already have VR, and its some of the most fun ive ever had !!! Just got DCS and a few addons, now I just need to get a decent joystick and other controllers so I can take full advantage of what DCS can offer. ( I should probably look at a better graphics card too ) haha

“Back in the 90s, when video games first came out.” -GS Now, wait a minute. I was playing SSI Gold Box games in my Atari 800 in the 80s, as well as Infocom (Zork was a blast, as was Deadline and Witness) 😂

Ha Ha I agree, what about the previous 30 years. 1958 the first tennis like electronic game was created. In the 1970's games like space invaders, pong, pacman the start of arcade machines etc, by the time the early 80's had started people were playing games at home on early consoles and home computers including early simulation's. In the 90's the video game market was pretty developed and I suppose it was when we started seeing early VR efforts, I remember a old TV show hosted by Lister from Red Dwarf where they had a VR type sim setup (it looked really crap even at the time) how the tech has improved is impressive.

@@tomwebber9936 I didn’t get an Atari 2600 (VCS) until 79. Activision always made the best graphic games for it, though. I think it was 82 when I got the 800, and 800XL actually. By the time the VCS broke, you couldn’t buy them in stores any longer. I had to buy all new cartridges to play the VCS games on the 800. And that’s all I did, because by then I had a PC/XT. Pong was released by Atari in 72. That was the first tennis game I remember, about the same time as the Magnavox Odyssey, which was the first home video game console. I never heard about the tennis game in the 50s, but it’s amazing they had started back that far.

I love VR, have owned an index for over a year now, and have hundreds of hours in flight sims with VR. One negative you forgot to mention, is text/gauges are harder to read unless you lean in to see them for the most part. I've tested this with my friends hp reverb g2, and it's slightly better but still difficult. Only a slight negative imho.

When the longbow comes out, I plan on learning that as much in VR as I can. Been TrackIr so far with everything else. Wanna start fresh with quest2 and an all new airframe.

Awesome vid, Growling Sidewinder. I had a VR PC before but immediately had one made to your exact specifications except 32GB RAM. Would you please share somewhere your System settings in DCS as well as your Steam graphics settings for DCS? I also lashed out on the Pimax after seeing that video of yours. As soon as I receive my custom prescription lenses, I'll be flying with that system too. Valve Index for now. Thanks also for your excellent other content; great tutorials and great advice.
